davidfreyyIt's a hobby and/or a pretty desk toy, depending on the user. If you're someone that's not interested in either of those then I imagine there's no use for it.
Your argument can be made for many items, though. There are a huge amount of pens, knives, flashlights, dice, and keyboards on MassDrop, to name a few. If you're not into the hobby then you probably wouldn't have a use for them either. What's the point of owning of owning five keyboards or flashlights?
I think it boils down to an "if you have to ask, it's not for you" sort of thing.
RashkhWell, to be honest, there's... oh... about, give or take, 8 flashlights in my house. There's one on my keychain (AAA powered), three AA/13450 powered, 2 18550 powered (one's in the car), 2 quad-AA powered, and a lantern (using 4xC w/ 2-AA adapters). :D
But you're talking to a guy with three mechanical keyboards. :D
davidfreyyI can tell you that research has clearly shown that if you're involved in cognitive tasks, like thinking (writing papers, analyzing data, etc.) playing around w/objects on your desk (or doodling) will heighten productivity and accuracy of the primary task. A precision spinning top is ideal as it allows you to briefly shift attention to get the top spinning and then your return to your task while snapping out of it again if the tops stops spinning. This type of monitoring not only keeps the brain more alert, but it also activates larger neuronal areas, which adds to the processing power you allocate for the primary task your involved in. I certainly have found that having a lot of toys on my desk helps me to review and interpret thousands of pages of dense information each day w/out getting tired. I had done the same thing years ago w/out my toys and I was certainly not feeling as comfortable as I am now.
kschangYou sound like me :-) Tons of flashlights, TONs if knives, and I just got my first mechanical keyboard (Logitech G610 Cherry MX Red) Man, I am wondering how I ever lived without one...so good. Which mechanical KBs do you have if you don't mind me asking :-)
WavesterNo knives for me. :D I have the cheap stuff. MagicForce 68 I'm typing on now, Poseidon Z was my gaming board, and a EagleTec KG011 Silver for the office PC.
kschangTo be fair, sharpening stones, massive flashlights, and thirteen inch machetes have all been on EDC. This is easily more practical to carry ever day than those items.
kschangI have a bunch of keyboards as well. Despite this, I can see why people look at me funny when I tell them I bought a bunch of caps for $100+. Apparantly, "they're a slightly different shade of blue" is not a very convincing answer. Same thing goes for tops.
