Does anyone else notice that comments on drops usually contain about 50% of the same question being asked over and over? People, especially on a new drop with only a few comments - how about reading them before posting the same thing again? Peace.
Damn, my whole post just got deleted while trying to add an image.
Here I go again.
I have four pairs of these boots - different colors. They are amazing. They run about 1/2 size large. They come with an insole that is removable. With that, you can use or remove the insole and vary socks thickness to make them fit just right - and being lace-to-toe, you can get them tightened to fit your perfectly.
The shoes are heavy, and they are the real-deal, Made in the USA built to last. I get compliments everywhere I go - I've climbed mountains in them, walked for days on vacation, and just for general bumming around. I will be joining this drop as the Natural were on my short list.
Thorogood is a great American company, located in WI, and the people there are tops.
Here's some I polished up during the Vikings halftime yesterday.
BTW, I am talking about the Portage roofers here, although I own the others as well.
I wear a 13, but some of them are 12's. For the 12's, I wear a thinner sock. For the Natural, I am not sure what way to go, but either work fine for me.
For fun, when I travel, I buy boot laces in different colors to mix things up. The pics below show Brown, Black, and Indigo - which are hard to get good pics of. They are all CXL, and a mix of horse and steer. I don't see any difference between the two choices - they wear and feel the same, so it's not an issue for me as opposed to jackets made from horse vs steer, which can be very different.
slb1961Just got my first pair two days ago from an online clearance site for $75. They are the limited edition mustard color Portage. Love the fit and feel and yes they run big but I didn’t have an option to size down on the clearance sale. I plan on buying every color I can find because I love the look, but I really don’t want to pay $300+ per pair. I will have to just be patient and search hard. Hopefully MD brings these back!
At $199, these are a steal! I was in the last drop of the Beloits and eventhough it had more colour options it was more $$. if you’re good with Natural then this is a no brainer. Great boots. Very VERY comfort out of box. GO HALF SIZE SMALLER!!! (If you’re a US9 then grab the US8.5) Trust me, it’ll fit like a glove!
While we have no humidity here, we do get 100°f and above during the summer. I wear them year round.
I guess I love pain but really it's about the socks. Merino wool. All year. SmartWool and Darn Tough are my favorites.
I joined a previous Thorogood drop . One of my boots was clearly defective, with a mis-sized tongue. mMassdrop would only offer me a return, as opposed to an exchange. Repeated emails and calls to Thorogood were never answered - that result is one ill-fitting Boot ...and a pair of boots sitting in a box in a closet...
You do not make any sense. The Portage is a more expensive boot and it is the same price as the Beloit! Now is the time to go for it. It will last a lifetime!!! You would use Saphir Gold boot creme and keep them nice and protected. The leather is the best and only gets better with time.
Any opinions on these versus Red Wing Iron Rangers? Quality? Comfort? Durability? Purpose is as a daily casual boot, not for work. $199 is the same price Iron Ranger seconds are available for.
MistertazVery similar. I think Thorogood offers slightly more for the money. Pick the one you like the most. Both very good quality for this price point and if taken care of should last through a few re-soles.
360* welt 1892 vs 270* IR (although you may prefer aesthetics of 270)
1892 sole has much more traction and versatility
IR seconds cost same as 1892 firsts here.
Details that are personal preference:
IR = toe cap Beloit = no toe cap
1892 = more pronounced stitching
IR = brighter more silver looking eyelets and speed laces (this one bugs me the most about IRs)
1892 = has some branding on outside of boot (not visible on Beloit unless pants rolled above the boot)
and finally, alot more Iron Rangers walking around then Thorogoods.
