Product Description
The result of a popular Kickstarter, KeySmart offers a clever alternative to the traditional keyring. By providing the structure and order of a Swiss-made pocket knife, KeySmart effectively eliminates bulk, thigh poke, key jingle, and other snares of keychains past Read More
I have two (massdrop) that I use, and have since also added the USB (argh) and bottle opener. It is a nice "almost perfect" product with a few niggles. Mine is EDC and it is sexy, but the issues are enough that I think I'm going to make a Leather Micra build.
1. If keys are not offset, you can't completely close the keys. If you use spacers to fix this issue, you effectively cut your key capacity in half. The longer version is probably better in this regard.
see http://imgur.com/a/ezu8n#0 -- the last picture illustrates the close issue if you don't use spacers to offset, compare to the first.
2. Anything beyond the run of the mill basic keys don't work well. If the form factor is off by much, or the key ring hole is a different size, the fit will be greatly impacted. For example, my desk key, office building key, bike lock key, and safe lock key don't play nicely.
3. USB piece is ridiculous. Most standard USB dongles won't fit at all. So you might be tempted to buy the Keysmart one. It is simply a Kingston DTSE9 with a rubber washer "adapter." On amazon the 32GB is $13, buying the USB+ addition at Keysmart is $28, so you're paying $15 for a rubber washer. Ouch.
4. Most keychain tools won't fit properly. This isn't really a product flaw, as much as something to think about. So you end up either taking them off, or adding them to the keyring attached to this, which reduces the benefit of this product. The bottle opener key from Keysmart is just that - no other 'tools' built in.
dehemke@dehemke already cited several issues that I can also attest to having with the KeySmart. I've got keys on there that aren't nice and flat and had to get the extenders to make it work, but because they're also longer than a standard house key I have the "can't quite close this fully" issue. I bought two on the last massdrop so that my wife could have the other one and the extenders snapped in half when I was putting her set together. So I've got one keysmart I'm using but not really as satisfied as the marketing suggested I would be and another that's worth more as scrap aluminum than as an innovative keyholder.
Two of my keys have a piece of hard plastic covering the key ring hole. Will the key smart accommodate this type of keys or would I need some kind of expansion kit?
EdsterNo the key smart need some kind of hole to go through (It uses a screw and nut technique to hold it in place) But this can be easily solved by heating up a nail and poking a hole through the hard plastic on your key ring.
If you're in California, ordering directly (getkeysmart.com) and using promo code "reddit" for 20% off is cheaper than here, even at the lowest price with 30 people committed, because of tax and Massdrop charging shipping.
TigoleToggle's comments remain the same for Canadians considering a purchase as well.
Going to order directly via www.getkeysmart.com gives you the note "Free Shipping! on U.S. orders over $25 * International orders over $45" on the main page.
Ordering the Titanium 2.0 standard at $48.98 or extended version at $49.98 exceeds the $45 threshold so shipping is free to both US and international customers.
Then use the promo code "reddit" for 20% off and you end up with a lower delivered cost than you would incur ordering through the Massdrop:
Regular Titanium
Massdrop: $32.99 + $7.64 shipping = $40.63
GetKeySmart: $48.98 + $0.00 shipping - $9.80 (20% discount using "reddit") = $39.18
Extended Titanium
Massdrop: $33.99 + $7.64 shipping = $41.63
GetKeySmart: $49.98 + $0.00 shipping - $10.00 (20% discount using "reddit") = $39.98
The math remains the same for any potential add-ons. As such, unless freight costs are reduced to something competitive, this is not a drop worth joining!
Thumper2500At the checkout on www.getkeysmart.com, I still get charged international shipping after the applying the "reddit" for 20% off coupon because the price dropped below $45 USD. Did I make a mistake somewhere?
Otherwise, it looks like it would be cheaper to get it on Massdrop for Canadians.
What encouraged me to buy this Keysmart at this price point is it's made in USA and is Titanium. Unfortunately, as per the card it came with, it is "Made responsibly in China"!!, and out of the plastic it is already scratched! I would have been better off buying the much cheaper keysmart 2.0 on their site.
J.AtikThis is terrible. I have found recently imperfections in other drops I have bought off MassDrop, I am certain they are flogging factory seconds to us at regular prices.
In case anyone is interested, you can purchase the titanium (or any other versions) of the KeySmart on the main KeySmart website 15% off with the promo code NOBULK15
Titanium: http://getkeysmart.com/products/titanium-edition
The 2-4 key version comes to about $33 with free ground shipping.
A quick update for everyone. Thanks to the group's help, we've identified that a handful of individual packages were received containing only the accessory components and not including the KeySmart unit itself. We realize this fulfillment hiccup is undesirable and are working closely with the vendor to resolve as quickly as possible. In the meantime, if those affected could please send us a message to https://www.massdrop.com/support we'll be sure to make this right for you.
Hey, first of all, I like it and Im not complaining.. but..
I have no idea what 'The frame is cut from a stock of Titanium' exactly means. I have multiple other things made of different grades titanium, this is.. not?
Scratch proof...
SigtranTitanium is anything but scratch-proof, it is highly susceptible to scratcching. I have this on titanium torches, a titanium watch bracelet as well. Stainless steel is much more resistant but significantly heavier. It seems kind of misleading for them to claim it is scratch proof ...
nobulk15 code still works! Thanks! Got mine from Keysmart directly and with shipping, came out to $33.14 with no extras added. Shipping was $0.00 for my location. May want to bypass Massdrop with the coupon still working. Hurry up and get it while you still can.
