Anyone to discuss DSD worth and why it was invented by Sony and still used by Sony only? (answer: profit). PCM is superior to comparable DSD - PCM won't have trailing high freq noise, and requiring low pass filter to cut it off. No need to reencode your FLAC, or MP3 to DSD. You've been fooled again...
Still no warranty on this DAC?
Just got a notice that my item shipped friday!
Is this a balanced dac?
DictatorDedede
no.
Any chance these will ship sooner? Maybe since drop sold out quickly, they could ship sooner?
Hi, just started in using amps and dacs. I have been using a combo Amp/ Dac for sometime, convenient :) Want to explore tube amps, especially Little Dot MKiii. Just wondering can this work with the MKiii? D50 usb connected to my macbook and RCA cables to the MKiii? Thanks for any info given.
Phuncure
Yes that connection MAC->VIA USB->D-50->VIA RCA->AMP will work.
Is this a upgrade from my JDSLAbS O2 rev 2 dac?

I can detect slight differences between my SDAC and D50 using a THX AAA 789, but not with my O2 amp. Furthermore this is only for sources that haven't been mastered - if it has then I can't tell differences between any of the gears. If I hadn't bought the 789 I'd follow with @phoenixsong and get the JDS Labs Atom, especially at a price like $99.
Jiv_au
Indeed, I find the worse my setup sounds (as a sum), the easier it is to pick out differences. The reason I'm getting the atom and not the 789, apart from the price, is because I do not have any balanced equipment to fully leverage on. As a result, the steep price hike does not seem worthwhile
anyone care to compare this against the JDS Labs OL DAC? I know this Topping has more tech, supports higher bitrates and DSD for example. That will make it more future-proof, which is nice but not super compelling to me at the moment.. more curious to hear thoughts about quality, reliability for one, and also sound signature of the D50 as compared to the neutral presentation typical of JDS equipment.
thanks!

in my opinion, native DSD playback would be unbeatable by the competition you cite... being as I have only a few files to listen to at this time, it's not as big a deal as it could be..most of the music I have is 16 bit FLAC rips of CDs I own and in this use, or internet streaming, the difference would be much less significant... but I am pursuing more DSD files as they tend to not suffer from the loundness wars typical of other digital music.. I really can't give you a fair comparison with this more common source material as I am still listening to this DAC. so, weigh your typical source towards your decision remembering that DSD playback is highly desirable
dssme
thanks for that. i'm new to the audio game, so mostly listening to spotify honestly, while starting to rip my CDs to FLAC like you, and occasionally buying a FLAC download from bandcamp or similar... so yeah, I'm not putting a ton of weight on DSD capability. That might change in the future of course, but I'm leaning towards the OL DAC at $99 and then if I feel a need to swap it out down the road I don't have much sunk into it..
Has anyone paired this with the Massdrop Objective 2 Headphone Amplifier: Desktop Edition?
phila58
You might wanna check out the new JDS Atom amp as well :)
I have a beet with one thing: spec's say that frequency response is 20Hz to 20kHz.
How is this high res?
Also, when I see headphone specs with listed frequency response as 20Hz–20kHz, I do not tend to think highly of them on first go.
m425
Hi res does not refer to the device's output frequency response. Hi res is the ability to process music recorded with a higher definition than CD quality (44.1khz, 16 bit) - see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-resolution_audio
Likewise 20hz to 20khz defines the human hearing range and is a standard aspired to by most audio devices. A more important measure is the variation which for the d50 is +-0.1db which is exceptional. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_range and https://audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-topping-d50-dac.2403/
The d50 is exceptional value for the money but you will need a good heaphine amp. I suggest you try the topping a30. Also a good USB cable and linear PSU in that order.
Does this dac have any pops or cracks on startup/shutdown (or at other moments like changed incoming sample rate)?
rajapruk
No. I upsample all music to dsd512 using daphile and have no issues.
How much does Massdrop charge for this bad boy?
They don't keep any units for warranty puposes! So if you have any issues, you just waited a few months for absolutely nothing. What a waste. Very disappointed with Massdrop on this
My unit was dispatched earlier this week, travelled and gets processed while in transit in the US.... But now it’s in Frankfurt, obviously doing the round world trip and it’s destintion is down under in Melb Australia.

Thank you for sharing your experience! For most of my purchases from Massdrop there is no signature required. But sometimes there was a 2-3 day delay. It is great that the D50 works flawlessly:]
Glad to hear you got yours quickly.
I thought my OPPO 105d had the edge too, but have changed my mind having listened to both the oppo and the topping D50 on and off for the past 6 weeks. The D50 has the edge now as I'm used to the sound - I think it has more detail than the Oppo.
The d50 is a great dac for the money.
Received my unit today... Plugged it in and nothing! DOA. It now smells slightly of burnt electronics. What a disappointment.
beware no warranty on this product after 30 days from the purchase
how does this compare to the chord mojo
damien_chung
It's a lot bigger, doesn't have an internal battery, and has a button and joystick instead of glowing balls. It's also half the price.
how does this compare to the smsl SU-8

Browse the forum. You'll also find SU-8 measurements. Topping wins big time. It's... just awesome.
I received my D50 today from the drop in early July.
Very impressed with the build quality, it's a solid, beautiful little unit.
Initial impressions are quite favourable and I'm surprised how good it sounds for the price and size. I've replaced my oppo 105D in my main system with the D50 for DAC duties and will see how I go over the next week as I listen more.

P.S. one downside is the little volume control stick - it is elegant and has different functions whether you go up, down or sideways, but this volume control stick does not look solid and not sure how long it would last if you used it a lot. Would have been nice if Topping used either a regular volume pot (but this may have been too small) or two buttons for the volume. They probably used the volume stick to save space and make it functional to control, but it feels quite fragile to me.
I just received my D50 DAC today from the June 28th drop. It was DOA! I hoping Massdrop will help me out here...

Just a hint, you must power the DAC with the 2.1mm jack, 5V 1 A... even when using the USB input, or any other input.. hopefully, that's all you need to do?
dssme
when i used the 1amp plug it wouldnt power on at all. Only when I used the 2.4 amp plug it powered on. Inputs dont click like other dac’s ive used. Toslink port doesnt light up. Coaxial to cd player didnt work either. I have already shipped it back. I am confident its fried.
Topping D50 with Yamaha HS8, will they work good?
This is one of the best performing DAC's you can buy. I am tempted to buy it, but I already have the Topping D30, and this will certainly not sound any better.

Modi Multibit and Audio-gd. I found the Mimby to be a definite step up from my D30 and in turn even better when paired with a Eitr. Later I upgraded to the Audio-gd which was a significant step up from the Mimby. I also have an iDSD BL which also measured well by amir and sounds great, but not as good as the Audio-gd dac.
guybkt
Have you tried the Grace Audio offerings at all and how does it compare to the Audio-gd? Which Audio-gd do you have?
I have the old NFB-12 with dual wolfson dac and am looking at upgrading to either a dac with Sabre or the Grace AKM implementation with the m900/9xx.
I really like the audio gd ACSS amp section tho - prefer current modulation vs voltage mod - the Grace m900 does current modulation too.
Cheers!
Getting this one to pair with my Node 2 and Yamaha AS-2100. will be using the akg k7 and kef ls50. Have been using the internal dac of my streamer so far (Blusound Node 2). Should I hear a notable difference in sound when I get the Topping D50. mostly used for video gaming and, electronic music. Sometimes rock. If anyone could share their experience with this dac that would be great.
thanks in advance :)
When I receive this dac my plan is to hook it up to my pc via usb, to the d50 and from there to my little dot mkii via rca cables and from there to my headphones. What will I need to set the volume to on the d50 since it has volume control. My current dac just sends the signal to my amp currently and there is no Volume control for that signal. Thanks all I appreciate the advice.

Thanks for the quick reply, so what number should I be seeing on the d50 volume wise. I was hoping there would be a setting to just set it and forget it. Kind of like the d30.
DrCap
Not rocket science. Set PC volume to max as stated so as not to decrease music quality. Keep DAC at default and adjust volume using knob on your little dot if your concerned with digital degradation.
On Amazon there are two different names for these. One is named Dilvpoetry TOPPING D50 and another one named TOPPING D50 with the same price. Are these the same?
Overview/Specs doesn't mention anything about a warranty. Am I to assume there is none? Amazon sells the unit with a "Warranty card" whatever that means. But it's at least something and perhaps included here as well?

As per Massdrop policy
Michael-Q
Specs don't mention warranty because there' none, from what I understand, per the site's policy. Once the 30 day return period is over, you're stuck with it. If it decides to go tits up beyond 30 days, you'll be SOL. So, buy it at your own risk, hoping that the couple of coins you save here is worth the potential risk of having a dead or deffective chi-fi device, with no recourse . As for me, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.
I wonder if this will drive my Sennheiser HD600? (also will pair this with the Bravo Ocean tube amp)

There is no headphone jack on the Topping D50 but you patch the line outs to the line ins of your Bravo Ocean amp.
KvGN
I just got the JDS Labs El DAC. So my system is El DAC -> Bravo Ocean -> HD600. It sounds really nice. Using this DAC should be very similar. The line out on the DAC is loud so I can't take the Ocean past 9:00
I am joining this drop. I own the Topping D10 with a Sparkos Labs opamp upgrade plus I have owned other Topping products in the past and I have always been impressed with Topping construction and quality.
May Topping release A5O Amp!
Hi team,
Can anyone advise me what the price of the last drop was? I'm trying to decide whether it's worth waiting for the next drop or just buy one from one of Toppings authorized AliExpress sellers. Also people saying they still haven't got theirs from July 1st is quite concerning. Thanks!!

After waiting for this one for the previous drop for 1 month after ship date and then also trying the D30 and waiting for an extra month and a half past the ship date I finally gave and order a El DAC from JDS Labs. I had it 3 days later. Got one of their B-stock models for the same price as this
