Product Description
The most addicting pen you’ll ever write with, the TiScribe-Bolt is precision CNC machined from premium materials for a writing experience unlike any other. And that’s not just because it writes as smooth as butter, but because it features a bolt-action mechanism that you’ll never want to stop fidgeting with Read More
Urban Survival Gear is the name of the company; the pen is called the TiScribe - bolt.
You're paying $75 for a limited-production, brass/copper/titanium pen, with a novelty extend/retract mechanism.
The "limited-production" part + the cost of the materials + keeping the one guy who runs the show mildly happy (so he has the energy to focus, be creative, and provide customer service) is what you're paying for.
I purchased a Ti UrbanSurvival pen through Kickstarter and although it looks nice, the bolt action is still grinding on mine (Yes, it's been through the motions of oiling and break-in period) Kelvin was kind to send replacement screws for the clip, but how does this stuff get overlooked when quality control was preached throughout the entire production? Lastly, I'm definitely not impressed with the MassDrop price point. I'm not here to kill business for the guy, just giving my two cents. Dont inflate your expectations on this item.
He sure did. How many times did I have to contact him to get my pen to function properly? Answer: 3
Does it now function smoothly? Answer: No
I'm speaking from my personal experience. I know quality when I see it and it just wasn't there.
RastopherMan, sorry to hear that. That's hard to Believe as what he did for me it's far beyond what I expected and/or deserved. And for a note here: I wasn't even a backer. I saw the pen and ordered it through his website. Try reaching out to him in a friendly email, as I'm sure there's a misunderstanding somewhere. Good luck man.
Just replaced my lost Böker bolt pen.
And then you drop this.

I want the copper one.
These look like they'll sound badass.
I want people to fear me when I pull out my pen and click it to sign invoices. :D
@BrainFlush I have the Ti version and it is definitely loud enough to annoy the heck out of people if that's your goal. :)
Of course any clicky pen will do that too...It's certainly not quiet. I like the sound it makes, including the slight grinding noise inherent to the fact Ti doesn't really like friction. It's very satisfying to fidget with and I like that the way the bolt action is designed means that it won't ever loosen up / fall apart. Highly recommended!
UrbanSurvivalGearIt wasn't for me anyway. I bought one direct a few months ago. A friend of mine commented on it and I thought that seeing it at a bit of a discount would give him the push to buy one.
It's a great pen by the way. They sell out fast for good reason.

That is rich. I get a mail for this drop. And it's in-active and not only that: comments are 32 weeks old? WTH?
I believed the last drop was only for 25 units.
When I checked the drop, both the Ti and Cu versions were already sold out and only left the Br version
Just got my copper pen today and, while I love the design, the pen itself leaves a little to be desired. My main complaint is that milled hole for the bolt/clip is quite sharp. I don't think that it'll cut me or anything but a slight chamfer or some sanding would have made the action much more comfortable. Maybe this step was skipped in part because of my second complaint which is that the copper (and I assume brass and titanium) is very thin. In comparison to most pens out there this is a non-issue but compared to my other machined pens including a Tactile Turn titanium Glider, Fellhoelter brass deluxe TiBolt, and Karas Kustoms copper "Bolt" the TiScribe-Bolt is considerably thinner and does't have the same heft that I've grown to love. Very nice but could be much better...
Edit: Photo added to show what I mean
Edit 2: Also just realized the copper pen that I got on the drop is on sale straight from Urban Survival Gear for only $70. Total BS, Massdrop.
thedupuisnerI just got mine today and I also agree that the edges of the clip feels a bit sharp, not to the point where it'll cut me, but it's a bit uncomfortable to play with it. I also think that a slight chamfer or rounding of the edges of the clip would make it more comfortable, but that would add extra labor/time/cost to production. There's also a bit of left-right wobble to the clip in comparison to the knob of my Fellhoelter TiBolt which feels more solid and tight by comparison.
And what's with manufacturers putting in the fattest tip refill? My Fellhoelter TiBolt came with a Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 Broad tip (vs Medium) and this TiScribe came with the 1.0mm tip. At least the Pilot G2 refills are cheap so I can try out the Fine (0.7mm) and Extra Fine (0.5mm) tips for minimal cost compared to the Schmidt refills.
That being said, I do like the slimmer size and lighter weight of the TiScribe over the fatter and heavier TiBolt which was the main reason I bought it. Yeah, and the sale price on USG's website, even with Int'l shipping is still $7.25 USD cheaper than what I paid on MD. Plus the Parker-style adapter kit is available on their website whereas it wasn't available as an option on MD.
I got my hands on one of these (stonewashed titanium) earlier this week, and it is a great pen. Ships with a cartridge with a bold tip, which isn't my style; but fits G2's so it was easy to change out for a cartridge I like. I did have to wipe mine down on arrival, to clean off notable amounts of dust/grim that I assume was from the tumbling step.
While massdrops prices don't look that appealing, I'm under the impression that while the ti model is listed at $80 on Urban Survivals site it will eventual be higher.
demuredemeanorHey Demure! there is a bit of graphite powder as lubricant on the inside of the pen. We've since went through the entire batch and rescrubed each pen.
Thank you for reminding me about the price increase. It was supposed to increase this morning. Kelvin
How sturdy are the rivets/bolts attaching the clip? I had a bad experience with a chintzier milled pen (*cough* Grafton) where the bolts loosened during the first week of use and eventually the clip just fell off.
Can you provide context of your situation and email? Screws don't fall out; they back out. Did you remove the clip and reinstall? What torque setting did you use when reinstalling?
My appologies, if you did not remove the clip. Perhaps you ordered a previous version. If so which one?
UrbanSurvivalGearThe pen I am referring to was from a previous massdrop order(MD-43856-2112120) In stonewashed Ti. I have never loosened a screw, much less removed the clip.
I noticed the screw missing one night when I removed the pen from my pocket and placed it on the shelf whe I keep my pens.
as far as the email,
“I have a tiscribe titanium pen that one of the screws in the pocket clip has disappeared. If it’s possible could you send me a few extra screws. ....”
was sunmitted via the support page on the website.
i requested a few because I liked the pen that I received from the massdrop order so much that I bought a different one directly from the website, and wanted another(screw) in case one of the ones from the other pen decided to “back out”.
I'm a pen fanatic and have a small collection of machined pens made by well-known and not -so-well-known makers. I acquired all three TiScribe pens, titanium, copper, and brass, through the Kickstarter project. Oh, boy, among all the pens I have, these have become my favorites for daily use. The titanium one is very light but is sturdy. Even the copper and brass ones are not that heavy, especially when compared to those made by other makers. When I first saw them on Kickstarter, I wasn't quite sure how well the bolt action will work since it uses the clip, not a knob. But I took the chance anyway and when they arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that they worked well and smoothly. With bolt pens, I use a technique that allows me to activate the bolt mechanism in one action so that it is basically just as efficient as using a click pen. That technique worked perfectly with these pens. (That technique does not work so well with Tactile Turn Glider and Slider pens, which is why I stopped using them. Sorry, Will Hodges.) The other thing about bolt pens is that their mechanisms will not jam or break like in the click button pens. Also, these TiScribe pens are much cheaper than the other pens I have, so I'm more willing to use and abuse them on a daily basis. I'm very happy with these pens. One word about the maker Kelvin: he is the best Kickstarter creator I've run into, among the many dozens I backed so far. On his Instagram account, he provided almost daily video status of where he was in the production, so that you can follow his progress until he started shipping. This guy is the definition of dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to his supporters. I was very quiet when I followed his IG account but now I'm being very vocal because I'm happy with the products I received from him.
