1st time on Massdrop for me to do this, but this is an unnecessarily heavy....@#*(@## item. Regret buying it.  This instead --> https://pocketbellows.com/

I don't get it, the 3-piece fire starting kit (which is most closely compares to this) that you linked to is heavier than this item...and looks cheap.
Aw I hoped it was a fire piston.
Save $3 from Amazon, but wait a month for shipping? Not so much. And a titanium version would be tits!
I wish this was available in titanium. At the price point and from Vargo I assumed it was, read the details and now I’m disappointed.
I bought one of these about a year ago. I haven't used it yet; however, last May while hiking the AT through the Smokies, and 3 consecutive days of serious rain, I loaned it to some thru hikers who were trying to get a fire going at the Mt. Collins shelter. Dry wood was scarce so I also loaned them my 15" Swen folding saw, and between the two, they managed a very nice fire late into the evening. They really liked the Fire Starter (and the saw), and at 1.8 oz , were very interested in obtaining one also. I would have given them mine but still had 4 days left on the trail myself and the weather forecast was dismal (it rained 3 more days in a row before subsiding on the last day). I am purchasing another for a friend who is finishing the last 500 miles of his AT section hike in June. I highly recommend this product.

Actually it was, it just wasn't enough at that particular stage of it being to be of use as intended.
Troutman
Your comment says the opposite.
I don't have a problem with this product, but is a metal straw really a "bellows?"

You could also walk to the grocery store but it's easier to bring everything home if you drive.

nowhere alike; what I mean is that you make a pipe shape with your hands, not carve out a pipe by hand.
A pocket bellows will run you $10 on Amazon and it's better and lighter.

two hands: $0
🙄 Go, go gadget...
Just tested this out while camping over the weekend, and the bellows turned out to be extremely useful. It's significantly more effective than just blowing or fanning.
I'm a complete newbie to using firestarters like this, and have always just used lighters or matches to start campfires, but was curious enough to give this one a try. I had a few unsuccessful attempts trying to start a fire with this thing, but I guess it just comes down to having flammable enough tinder. It was hard to find decent tinder in the area due to having rained recently. My first attempts were with dead leaves and wood shavings, which probably could have worked if they were drier.
I tried again later with petroleum jelly-coated cotton balls, which ignited quite easily. That felt a bit like cheating, though, and I would perhaps be better off packing the equivalent weight in matches. I'd probably need to be more experienced in finding/making good tinder in the woods before relying on this as a primary means of starting fires.
TL;DR: Happy with my purchase, will probably bring this with me from now on based on the usefulness of the bellows alone, with the added benefit of having a (theoretical) backup firestarter in the event that I run out of matches.

There's not such thing as "cheating" when building a fire. I carry multiple sources of fire, and dry tinder. You will thank yourself if you ever get in a situation when you really need to get a fire going.
Troutman
Amen. When you need fire for survival you're in a very binary situation. You can't over carry. I carry two fires and two tinders myself.
You can buy an extendable backscratcher at the dollar store and break off the scratcher part to replicate this. I did and it works perfectly.

Or even cheaper, lighter and easier to carry, a small length of 5mm irrigation hose

I've literally bought 5 or 6 of the collapsible grilling forks from Academy. 2 bucks, heavy duty and come with a rubber coated handle.
How about offering solely the titanium wood burn stove as a drop?

How about negotiating a bundle deal with the titanium wood stove. I'd be all in for that deal.

Oh yes, impressive!!!
looks like a cool product, add some magnesium and drop the price it would be great. You can buy this on amazon for $24.99 with free shipping (prime membership). You really aren't' saving much when you pay $19.99 plus $2.75 for shipping. It is a nice thing to have but a little overpriced especially when other fire-starters that have magnesium are in the $5-8 range. I just blow on my fires or use a paper plate to create a bellows action. I do a lot of camping and leading Boy Scouts. I wouldn't mind trying one out and if it works perhaps we could buy more to give a way to the boys or other people interested. Is there a bulk deal or a way to get one to try out before we purchase in bulk or something?

that is what i use most of the time. the magnesium really burns baby!

As long at it works, I will be happy.
I have a different compact bellow but can't imagine camping without it anymore. This thing is incredibly effective and makes your fire starting/reviving so much easier. I've never used this brand but trust me and get one and you'll be glad. Here's the one I have. Cheaper, more compact, and probably more efficient since the end tip is narrower for more concentrated air flow, but without ferro:

Sure, but the Vargo has a rod and striker built in. It's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. Granted I already have plenty of firestarters, but the idea of having one self-contained with the bellows is rather appealing, although I haven't weighed my fire starters to see if it would be a net weight/volume loss or add. If the starter included in the Vargo works well this would be a great "all in one". I suspect it would actually make a really great gift for someone who doesn't have a starter yet.
EverythingIsBetterOutdoors
I thought of that, and I do like the firestarter being integral. Just a little concerned about stripping the plastic or dropping the firesteel. Also, that kind of striker is terrible. A flat surface would be better. In the end, I ended up getting it off Amazon for a better deal and I stripped the striker off. I like it now!
$24 for this? 99% of the buyers will throw this in a junk drawer by the end of the year

....which pretty much describes all MD purchases. 😉

How ridiculously unnecessary. A freaking 1970s car antenna and a ferro rod. Gonna pass on this one.
shard_inc
concur = ridiculous
Pretty irresponsible fire building practices going on there. Please build your fires on soil, not duff.

Looks to me like the fire is built inside an existing fire ring (hence the stone wall in the background), so it looks okay to me.
PeterWheeler
Possibly. But I would prefer safe, not sorry.
Interesting Idea but i usually just make one out of a stick when out backpacking. split it down the center, bore out the core and use twine or reed to bind back together, simple easy and give you something to do at camp.

@McCaskill - Cool! Thanks for sharing the technique. Do you have any photos of one that you've built?
DannyMilks
I don't unfortunately. Usually toss it into the last fire, leave no trace :D
