I picked up a few of these and have put them in emergency kits, strapped them to my hiking packs, and I stuck one in the glovebox of our car. You never know when you'll be in a situation where you'll need help, and having something that's super loud and can get someone's attention from far away can be the difference between life and death.
Not very loud compared to several less expensive options.
Several years ago I slipped off an icy dock and fell into the water. Although there were people nearby who might have potentially helped me get out of the water, my shouts for help were not heard above the howling wind. I barely managed to get my self out and vowed that from then on I would always carry a whistle and signal light when near the water. I recently purchased the “WE Knife Titanium Keychain Whistle,” thinking it a better option that the small plastic safety whistle I’ve been using for the last several years. Fortunately I decided to test it prior to adopting it for daily use. It was woefully inferior in loudness compared to three small “lifevest” type whistles I collected over the years. It only found it marginally louder than a cheap plastic “referee” type whistle. In balance, the “WE Knife” whistle appears sturdy and well made. However there are much louder and less expensive options. I’ve attached a photo of the whistles I tested, in order of increasing loudness-left to right.
It's lightweight. It's titanium and pretty. It has an eyelet so you can put it on a keychain. And it's so loud that it hurts my ears. I've been training my dog to come when I blow the whistle. The only thing I would change is to make the resonant chamber slightly longer to get a lower pitch, as it is quite shrill.
