Any suggestions on tube upgrades? I got Tong-Sol and Mullard reissue tunes made in Russia, they appear to be the same visually and i can’t hear any differences between them. They do sound better than the stock one, slightly more detailed with more body and better base. But even stock one isn’t too bad, sounds better than my more exensive solid state amp.
Have anybody tried JJ, Grove, EHX or Genalex tubes?
GregLI picked up a NOS GE branded Mullard on eBay for about $30 and it sounds really good. I'm using a Raspberry Pi running Volumio to feed the TA-01 and I'm listening on a pair of Massdrop/AKG K7XXs. The tube and headphones both have ~100-hours of burn in time on them.
I always struggle to describe audio (I can hear the differences in my head but the words tend to escape me) but here goes my attempt: The detail on this setup is great, nothing I've listened to thus far sounds muddy in the slightest. The treble isn't incredibly bright which I think is a good thing as that tends to hurt my ears. The bass has a reasonable kick (I imagine this is partially because it's a hybrid rather than solely tube; on my home system it took me a bit to find tubes with what I consider reasonable bass). I think describing the soundstage as fairly wide is an accurate descriptor.
So I've had the thing for about two weeks and for an office setup it is much better for the price than it has any right to be. I'm a tinkerer so I'll probably continue to mess with my setup over time, but this will hold me for at least a little while.
