How much did these drop for? I really hope they drop again, these are supposedly great.
BE WARNED IF YOU JOINED THIS DROP -- JUST A NOTE OF INFORMATION:
THIS DROP IS NOT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND ARE NOT PURCHASED THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED YAMAHA DEALER. THE WARRANTY IS ***VOID*** IF PURCHASED THROUGH THIS DROP.
While Massdrop does have some drops coordinated with the Manufacturer (Sennheiser headphones for example) I have been in touch with Yamaha because
I joined and purchased the HS8's through a drop last year. I had a power supply fail in one of the monitors. After (6) weeks of trying to get someone to listen they had me ship the bad unit back and then after another three weeks informed me they couldn't replace them. As a professional Audio producer for Radio and TV I had to purchase another set from Sweetwater. (BTW Sweetwater came close to the price and they are fully warrantied)
Yamaha indicated Massdrop nor their "vendor" are authorized to sell Yamaha and they are attempting to find out the source of this purchase.
These are GREAT Near Field Mastering Monitors but BE ADVISED PURCHASING THROUGH MASSDROP ***VOIDS*** WARRANTY ELIGIBILITY.
I hope my misfortune can be a warning to others so my fellow audiofiles don't go through the hassle and expense that I had to go through.
Cheers.
Piece or pair ?

Note: This drop includes one monitor in your choice of black or white. If you need two monitors for a stereo setup, you can add an additional monitor at checkout. Quantities are limited to 3 units in black and 25 units in white. Shipping is limited to the US.
I ordered these in White, I'm not seeing anything on my order that specifies that. Is there any way to confirmation that I'll be getting the white speakers and not the black?

I dabble with music production and these are undeniably great monitors. Hyper clarity and power. If it sounds good on these it’ll sound good elsewhere. I use the 8” so there’s never a need for a sub - not sure with the 5”. Very good for instruments, lead synths and vocals.
Lot's of folks don't understand the difference between studio monitors and bookshelf speakers. Bookshelfs are meant to fill a room with sound. The frequency response and sound of bookshelf speakers is going to be somewhat ( or a lot) hyped. Imagine a graphic equalizer with the bass and treble bands pushed up, and midrange frequencies pulled down. This type of speaker sounds great on your pop music and dance music. Studio monitors are meant to be flat, clean and clear. They are not designed to fill an entire room with sound. They are meant to be set up a few feet in front of the listener, and played at a moderate volume. In a way you can think of monitor speakers as headphones that sit out in front of you. If you are sitting 3-4 feet directly in front of them, enough bass. Or at least enough to discern whether an instrument needs to be eq-ed.

GREAT description of the difference in Near Field and Bookshelf - could not have explained it better... JUST AN FYI NOTE: I am a big Massdrop Fan and have and still purchase items through Massdrop. Also I own a pair of the YAMAHA HS8 purchased and these are FANTASTIC NEAR FIELD MONITORS IN MY OPINION. HOWEVER - "B"E" W"A"R"N"E"D" -- MASSDROP AND THEIR VENDOR FOR YAMAHA MONITORS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO SELL YAMAHA. THE MANUFACTURER 3 YEAR PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY ON THESE MONITORS "I"S" "V"O"I"D" WITH A MASSDROP PROOF OF PURCHASE. I PURCHASED THE HS8 on the last drop and after about a year the power supply began to fail. AGAIN - MASSDROP IS NOT AUTHORIZED to SELL YAMAHA. IT TOOK MASSDROP 6 WEEKS TO AUTHORIZE A RETURN. Because I was using these on an ongoing project I had to PURCHASE ANOTHER PAIR THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. With the time and effort the "Discount" I got through Massdrop which ended up being about $100.00 total COST ME $1,000 dollars in time and the second set. Unless they explicitly state on the drop info that "comes with manufacturer warranty" (which some drops do) ASSUME THE MANUFACTURER WARRANT IS VOID. Hope this helps those of you who are considering joining the drop. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY...Although I LOVE THE HS8...however I don't know what the reduction in woofer diameter will do to bass response. On the HS8 there is no need for a sub woofer. Great Monitors - just decide whether or not you are cool buying them and giving up the (3) Year Parts and Labor Warranty that you won't have.
Just had a quick question. Im trying to get a surround sound setup whether it will be 5.1, 7.1, whatever. I guess Im wondering if it would be odd to get 5/7 of these speakers..? Or 2 then the rest are from another brand? Im a noob obviously so, apologize for the confusion.

Actually, the best gear is to be found in Japan, and it's generally difficult to get it in the US . Regardless, it isn't anything found here on Massdrop.
BlueSkies
True, JP keeps the best to domestic market.
17 purchased? I hope someone didn't order 1 thinking they will be getting 2.
BlueSkies
Clearly that's for a 17.1 surround system.
Woo hoo, 30K highs... my dog will be so happy.
I’ve read nothing but good things about the HS5 and HS8 monitors, but I still went with a different option for my setup due to multiple bad experiences with small active monitors overheating and burning out their internal amp within 1-2 years of normal usage . While I do use the matching Yamaha sub (which is outstanding, btw), I instead went with a pair of the JBL Control 1 Pro passive monitors paired with a Crown XLS1002 stereo power amp. Outstanding sound quality for mixing/monitoring purposes, and zero risk of the amp overheating and burning out with normal usage.
Just a thought: it would be useful to mention that these are active somewhere in the copy before the specs. Also, as they are biamped, does each driver get 35 watts or is the power different for each driver?
Randingo
they're 45W LF + 25W HF
You can get a pair of these speakers locally US.at Music's Friend for $340 ( 15% off $399.89)Is this a 100V model or the 120V model?

I put multiple links only so that nobody can claim that the price I am referring to is a singularity a one time rare offer of a specific store or something and that the standart price is different...
The standart price is what ever most of the market puts out for a price tag thats the standard price..
And these are EU prices which means that they already have 19% or 24% VAT included (which US based offers dont have so that means they could lower their price even more)
Pricedrop has become full of BS... it used to be that you get things cheaper because you massordered them with other at wholesale prices... now its just an other retailer giving you things up at retail prices and probably they avoid in that way taxes that other legit retailers have to pay...
Massdrop doesnt serve us we serve massdrop... and by "we" I mean you the poor guys that get screwed up and giving them your hard earned dollar. I dint even check but I bet most retailers have a better price in USD for those speakers (especially because of the absence of VAT) well actually its just a google away so here it is 120$ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CFOX420?m=A4OT5UXFXYTGI&ref_=v_sp_detail_page
if these retailers can sell on that price you bet your behind massdrop could get a better offer ... and maybe they did and just sell them for 150$ and pocket the spread.

In the US these are $200 USD on Amazon, $150 for a used speaker

Wow you have too much time on your hands to bitch to this level. Nobody is forcing you to use Massdrop so fuck off
I have a pair of the HS8's and love them. I'm looking for a smaller set of reference monitors to compliment them (I would love to get some mix cubes but find the active ones too expensive for their intended purpose).
Does anyone have experience using the HS5's with the HS8s or similar large reference monitor? Thoughts on it?
Load 5 more comments
I would up getting a mixcube to compliment and it's perfect for me, I keymapped my mono to a letter on my keyboard and then when it's on and I mono the whole track and turn off the Yamahas ( have them set to a stomp on off power source by my foot) its really flat and nice.
Check your input gain (volume) if the volume is turned all the way up on any powered device you most likely will hear some light hum. If you hear a sudden sharp crackle without adjusting the volume most likely you've got a bad power supply. Please see my note on these particular brands if purchased through Massdrop - These are great speakers - BUT PLEASE SEE MY CAUTION - they are not Warrantied through Massdrop and Yamaha will not honor the warranty because they are not sourced through an authorized Yamaha Dealer.
Note to people who expect the world at least somewhat logical: This drop is for ONE speaker. Not a pair. ONE. Because a studio somewhere really wants to monitor their audio in mono.
Some clarification: I know that studio monitors can/are sold per speaker. But I've never seen a POWERED studio monitor that didn't come as a pair. Mainly because it doesn't make sense for each speaker to have it's own amp.

It makes perfect sense for powered studio reference monitor speakers to each have their own amplifiers. The goal of a monitor is to serve as a reference, so each speaker should be identical, so the amp should be built into each. One never need be concerned which speaker is left or right. And a speaker could be replaced independently if needed. And identical speakers with their own amps could also be used for mono or 5+ channel surround.
I've definitely encountered both single and pair. Generally pairs are single amp in one speaker and a passive second speaker as you described. These tend to be cheaper budget options (cheap mackies, rockvilles etc) or meant to be home bookshelf speakers (i.e. vanatoos). Medium budget to higher end dedicated sound production monitors tend to always be individually amped and sold as singles. This was the case years ago with my m audio bx5s. A couple of the reasons this completely makes sense is that the built in amp in each individual speaker would not only be isolated from each other, but also the space taken up inside the cabinet by said amp would be identical, and thus a pair of these single speakers would always sound consistent. While an active + passive pair probably sounds so close you can't tell.. the true audiophile/sound engineers that claim they can hear the difference, will always clamor for individually amped speakers sold individually like this.
How would these go for casual listening and gaming? looking for something to replace a home theathre set as they're a bit large for a small room. Or should i go for something else? And if yes, what should i go for. I don't want overly off the top bass. but also the option to turn the bass to eleven.

what sort of amp/ dac will power these? Can you recommend some for use w pc/ma? I thought to play around w Logic Pro X hobbies.
Pyrowaves
These are powered monitors, so no amp needed. They'll accept any line out signal, you'd just need to have the appropriate cables.
I really dont understand all the people saying that these absolutely need a subwoofer for casual listening.
Sure they dont thump or rattle the room but they have a great bass response IMO. No artificial or bloated bass sound, just tight and accurate.
They do have a very flat response (which I tend to prefer) so I could understand why some people may not be huge fans of the signature, but based on others comments I was expecting a lot less that what I'm hearing.
fwiw, I'm using them on my PC with an AudioGD Master 11 as the DAC/preamp

Because without a sub, you’ll get very anemic bass reproduction, because these are not designed to reproduce the low frequencies; read the specifications.
PureAngus62
I use these for mastering and for watching movies - the bass response on the 8" is outstanding from my perspective. Any well mixed source will be translated as such . I actually now prefer to watch movies at my console - combined with the 5K retina display of my iMac Pro combined with the HS8 it's a fantastic experience - I would image it would be great for gaming. I do not know how the 5" sound - smaller diameter may mean less bass -- can't say as I haven't heard 5". Please see my caution on purchasing Yamaha through Massdrop: These are great speakers - BUT PLEASE SEE MY CAUTION - they are not Warrantied through Massdrop and Yamaha will not honor the warranty because they are not sourced through an authorized Yamaha Dealer.
Waiting for the HS7 to come back. How about it Massdrop?
I bought these when they they were $160 each. If you are listening to music you must get a subwoofer.
What's a good speaker for light gaming or for a tv

Like I said, it is your right to be wrong, and I'm obviously not going to change your mind.
Too funny, perception today is based on little speakers, that do need subs, many nowadays simply have never listened to "Old School". My Klipsch KLF-20's do not need a "sub-woofer", they came built-in back then,, four 10" ones. Never did a block party, but have had them out on the deck for fun, cranked they give you a home outdoor concert feel, need warning zone cones around them;) The KLF-30's must be even more fun...
Are these good for djing? Will they be as good as the hyped up krk?
Soko
I've heard that these have generally more of a flat frequency response, while the KRK's have a lot of added bass and treble. I don't know much about DJing but hopefully that helps you with the decision process.
Soko
It depends on what sound you want but I'd say these are much better for production not DJing. I do both and I use my Yamahas for production (mastering, mixing etc) because the sound is more "flat" aka neutral which means the bass isn't enhanced and you hear what you should as you should. For DJing you could use them but in my opinion it depends on what you'll use them for. If you plan to use them as a set to rock a small party, I would avoid these and anything with a 5" cone or smaller as it will be lacking in bass heavily. So if you're looking for monitors you can primarily use for performance, I'd 6.5-7" cone is the smallest you should go for DJing (unless you just want them to practice with, these would work but they'd lack some bass). If you want performance DJ Monitors go with some KRK's or the new JBLs. They are both much more bass heavy and great for their price.
How does this compare to Presonus 4.5? Actively looking for a small monitor which will be used mainly for music. I have space constraint so the smaller the better. This will sit beside my monitor and will be like 5 inches from the wall. JBL LSR305 would have been my choice based on the reviews but they are a bit big and I read they are required to be further out from the wall to sound good. Due to space I'm also considering edifier R1280T. This is just for occasional use, for serious music I have Focal Aria speakers.
My candidates are: H5 - Flat sound - a bit wider than Presonus 4.5 Presonus 4,5 - A bit smaller than H5 JBL - Good for listening to music - Quite big - Requires to be positioned further from the wall
My worry on these H5s are that they are too flat for music listening. Anyone compare this with the Presonus e4.5? Like JBL, does H5 or Presonus requires to bit further from the wall to be good? What is the recommended distance from the wall?

Definitely not too late djjsut. Thank you for your comment. I'll tick this one out then... Yea I'm only going to use it for casual listening. Mostly while in front of computer or need to watch quick clips over the internet.
CliffCri
Klipsch - makes some reasonable built for computer with a decent subwoofer. Also the Bose Companion are highly rated if you aren't a Bose Hater.
Finally a white HS5 drop, will be joining this one.
These are near field mixing reference speakers. They are flat and great for mixing. The jbl are also considered near field reference, but will have no problem filling a medium sized room, however, jbl has too much low end, coloring the sound too much for mixing and mastering. If your looking for the best mixing reference speakers, these are it at this price. I bought mine for $200 each and they are worth it. They give me the best mix , with good bass. lf you just want to listen to music, then jbl is a great choice. So, I use Yamaha for mixing and mastering and jbl for end product and pleasure. Yamaha, flat, uncolored, perfect. If you use jbl for mix, odds are your mix will lack bass.
And they finally do a drop where white speakers are an option... two weeks after an incident happened that rendered me broke. GG
Lol i just bought a pair for $250.. from Indonesia btw
feinanng
How did you get them? Please share the information. Thanks.
Does this come as a pair?
Dabearals
The note says it's only for one, so you have to add an additional one at checkout.
Equator 8" units are very nice, but I have a well treated room. Running a jbl 310 s with them. You can try them, and return if you don't like. I've got acceptable mixes with stuff much worse.
