Does the max volume mean you can set it higher to hear people talking but when explosions start happening it won't go crazy loud? I'm looking for a system that can do this.
Seeing refurbished makes me a little antsy. I have an old Yamaha receiver from the 90s and I am looking to step into the digital age. I have 4 box speakers and a sub (need a center bar still). Wondering if I should go in on a new receiver that boasts slightly lower quality, or snag this for the product it is with less concern for it being refurbished.
MountainSoundsI'm with Bort. Everything in my entertainment center is refurbished and it all works just fine.

...have to agree generally. I bought yamaha 473 and jbl cinema speakers, both refurbs, several years ago and no issues at all. Saved a hell of a lot of money, all on perception. It was somewhat of a risk on my part as im from Australia. If the cost is not imposing, the risk is often worth it.
Okay, fair enough. That's a fair comment :'D Yeah but y'know I wanna have good audio quality at a fair price. That's why I came to Massdrop. I'm currently waiting on the Klipsch R-15PM t ogo down again to $270, but maybe that'll take a while.
What's the quality like on this thing? I really need to pick up a new A/V receiver. I'm tired of running SPDIF out to my crappy receiver.
I will do some research when able, but I'm wondering if anybody has experience with this model and can tell me how they like it?
Any limitations off-hand? The big reason for me to upgrade is so I can start watching movies off my work laptop. It can push 4k no problem, but my ps4 pro stumbles when I try to feed it DTS-HDMA etc...not that I *need* that audio, it's just, the 4k files I am playing tend to have the highest quality audio available, and it just won't work on a lot of things.
I figured instead of spending ~$5-700 on the newest sony or denon, I could give this a try at a discount. Hopefully the feature set is close?
That was one of the receivers I was thinking about. I'm having trouble between the Sony STR-1080 or whatever, and the denon x1400h.
I will have to do a little more reading soon!
SeelenThe sony str-1080 is awesome if you're okay with the power. It has no pre-outs so you can't upgrade the amp for your speakers. If you can get a good deal grab it.
Just need to wait for (or request) a good 2.1 drop. I'm with you, no need for a 35.1 system either--I just want to listen to the music. By the way, I have those speakers too (and love 'em) but you'd need a pre-amp output from anything you'd connect them to. I run mine through a Jotunheim. That allows for various inputs from other sources (including a receiver).
mr.spockFirst, Atmos is a codec and doesn't require "height" or "ceiling" speakers. It supports normal 5.1 and 7.1 layouts as well as the new presence channels. For this receiver, you'd use a 5.1.2 Atmos configuration, forgoing the rear surround connections in favor of two presence speakers.
mr.spockLook at the back of the AVR and look at the last PAIR of connections for speakers. It says "presence" or that would be the top of your rear Atmos speakers. I agree this is a cheap Atmos receiver and is lacking a few channels for those that don't want speakers everywhere. This would be a 5.1 Atmos experience VS. the full blown 9.1 Atmos.
Had one of these for several months and just love the sound! The scene setting for presence gives a really open sound stage that sparkles with an aluminum magnesium midrange driver that I put in my living room speakers.
Upgraded from an old ONKYO and man there is just no comparison!
