So, what is the best chair in the opinion of anyone reading this question.
By best chair I don't mean a five pound chair that you carry around car camping, and use in a campground, or picnic area, or anywhere else; I mean what is the best chair that you could use to take on a backpacking trip?
Obviously the chair must be light, and compact, probably two pounds or less, but at the same time be able to support at least 250 pounds, and preferably 300, so as to have added durability over the long haul.
I know a lot of hikers are short, and slightly built guys, in the sub 200 pound range, as well as most women hikers, but there are some of us guys who are over 6 feet tall, and up in the 225 to 250 range, and some above that from what I have seen.
There have been many times where I was hiking, backpacking, kayaking, where I would have liked to have a chair to sit in while at my camp.
Usually I had to try and find a log, or to sit on some big rocks, or boulders, but that kind of got old after awhile, and there is no real comfortable position with back support.
Sometimes you can set up your hammock as a chair if you are a hammock camper, but probably still not as good as a chair.
Sometimes after taking my boots off when crossing streams, I would have liked to have had a chair that would allow me to be positioned in a more elevated position while pulling my socks and boots back on my feet.
If I could not find the right log, or rock, then laying on the ground not so efficient, or comfortable.
Even if you are in good shape, putting on your shoes gets more difficult with age. LOL
FInally, what could be better than eating your supper, and then taking a nap in the chair while in a scenic and remote spot,; with only the sounds of the wind blowing through the trees, the singing and chirping of the birds and squirrels, and the babbling of a brook to lull you to sleep?
I would love to hear back from all of you on suggestions, and recommendations for a great backpacking chair.

Go to rei.com, buy the rei flex lite chair. it is $45 and MUCH better/easier to assemble than this one. and you sit much higher from the floor as well.

gcb0Try actually sitting in both chairs. The REI chair is not comfortable.

$8 shipping to the continental US.
Massdrop: Why do you only list the shipping on the product page when it's free shipping? When it's not free, we have to actually try to buy the product to check the shipping cost. This is underhanded.

Cyn1cAs said above by W8lkinUSA, shipping cost is dependent, on shipping destination as well as purchase quanitity. I guess what they could do is make it a variable on this page and adjust according to each account, but that does not take into account if a person is going to buy more than one.

ChurchillWFrustrates the hell out of me too.
You have to be logged in to see the deal, so they know where you are. Amazon and eBay show the shipping.

Hi Guys, this is AJ from Alite.
Regarding the folded dimensions of the chair, the information listed here is inaccurate.
The folded dimensions are in fact 11.5 x 4.3 x 4.3.
Thanks and we will look into getting that updated for you guys.

samuelWhat about the weight? The Alite at Mayfly is .4 lbs and at Massdrop it is over 1 lb a big difference for backpacking.
Cheers,

Regarding weight, all Alite chairs are marketed as having a 250lb weight capacity. Truth is they are able to hold upwards of 500lbs of static weight before breaking. They are marketed that way to give an idea of the maximum size that you could be an still sit comfortably. I would say the true cutoff for that is about 300lbs, and either way, we would never hold your weight against you on a warranty claim. It would not void your lifetime warranty.

Went to REI 6 or so times struggling with my infatuation for this chair, I just needed it for some reason. Sat in every chair in the store, did online research, and being on a budget I hated that I wanted it so much.
The worst part of the chair is that if you are using it for backpacking, the lightweight community will heckle you to no end about how much you don't need it. For me it was well worth the extra weight.
Initially it was used for an 8 day YNP hike, and it was the only chair for 5 people. We shared it and welcomed it halfway through the trip as maybe our favorite luxury. I picked it of all the chairs because it was the most comfortable (165 lbs 6') and the bottom line is that this chair just makes me happy.
Didn't vote for this drop, but whoever did thank you. This chair is rad.

I'm wondering why the only poll I can find in discussions about lightweight chairs was overwhelming in favor of the helinox chair zero, but the only drops I see are for other chairs that weren't even close in the voting.

MsilverhammerI currently use a Helinox chair one for backpacking and love it, but having a chair zero that will hold 260lbs and weighs almost a pound less would be great!

Just got back from a three week TDY (Temporary Duty) overseas. (Yes I am doing reviews for all of my Massdrop stuff if you see this in multiple threads) I took my Mayfly with me strapped to the outside of my carry-on. It was invaluable during the hurry up and wait aspects of military travel when there aren't always enough seats ro comfortable seats around. I also found it useful to be able to sit next to my bunk and read in a n open bay barracks where the only furniture is your rack. Overall it went very well and I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase. I expect I sold more than a couple people on the Mayfly and on Massdrop during the trip.

I've been looking for a lightweight camp chair. There are too many negative reviews (spanning years) about the poles of this chair slipping inside of each other, rendering the chair useless. That concerns me.

ADKGuyI read some of those reviews as well. It looks like the manufacturer has solved this issue. It has a lifetime warranty, so if you happen to get the older unit, I'm sure they'll replace it for you.

bmpweYes. This. I have one of the older models and it started having the issue with the inserts sliding into the poles. Emailed Alite and they shipped me one of the updated frames. They redesigned the hub connection so it's not an issue anymore. Great customer service and a great backpacking chair!

I recently bought capitola blue and the old beige forage pattern from REI on the cheap. What wasn't mentioned on the REI page was that the forage is made of a heavier and thicker 450D Poly so it was much harder to get into the bag than the blue colorway. Can someone confirm if all the options are 210D ripstop?

RifledDream Hi @RifledDream - I double checked with the vendor and can confirm that all the printed chairs are 450D polyester and the solid colors are 210D ripstop nylon. I hope this helps!
