really, really comfortable. but not for sports

really comfortable. cushy, wide, breathable, and stretchy. I got rid of a bunch of old shoes, and got two pairs of these. The only downside is that these arent for active sports. I wont even do long distance running. The top knitted portion is... well, its like thick, thick sweater. Tough, but still flexible. That makes the shoes comfortable, but it doesnt provide structure. I tried to play indoor soccer (for fun, nothing competitive) in these, and it didnt provide any structure to hold my ankle when i made quick stops or turns. I ended up rolling my ankle. These are great walk around, casual shoes, but nothing more. dont do anything aggressive in these.

Tie your shoes, folks

I've seen folks call out problems with the heel digging into their skin while wearing low rise socks and I can reproduce this "flaw" too but only when I fail to untie and re-tie the shoes (ie- slip them on and off between wears like socks). If I tie the shoes so that they're not loose, this doesn't happen. At $48 a pair, these are a much more comfortable and roomy alternative to Allbirds.

Like slippers! Only running shoes I use are Altra, so I was happy to see a casual shoe with the same foot shape. I will say that for me they ran a half size big. This round I am going smaller, and gifting the 8.5 ones I have to my partner who wears nines. She tried them on and they fit perfect for her.

Might be that some have not worn Altra shoes as much as I have. Given that my partner and I (we both have ran in Altras for years) both experience the sizes being a half size too big, we are probably the best example of how these fit Altra users.

RaventxThese are definitely at least half a size larger than Lone Peak 4.0/Timp Trail 1.5 of the same size. Wish I knew this when ordering...

Just received mine from the last drop and have been wearing them the last 2 days. Very comfortable however they do fit slightly tighter than the Altra Duo running shoes I have. I am a big Altra fan and have been running in them long enough to have gone through about 12 pairs. Great shoe and $10 less than the last drop so I might be in for another pair.

almost...but not quite

I have worn these shoes everyday for almost a month. I wanted to give them time before writing a review. I have two other pair of Altra shoes, one for running and another for hiking. So I am not new to the style of the shoe. Sizing: I am a size 12 in most shoes, and a size 12 in the Altra Vali seems correct. I think that an 11.5 would be too small and put my toes at the end of the shoe. Width: The toe box is wide and I love it. Comfort: Being zero-drop and the mesh material make the shoe very comfortable overall. So why only 3 stars? Very simply the heel area of the shoe. I consistently get rubbing above my right heel. I have tried tightening them, loosening them, thinner socks, thicker socks, etc. It is just annoying enough that I would not repurchase the Vali, but instead look for a comparable shoe next time.

As an Altra fan, these are really disappointing. There is a very tall, very hard heel cap that digs into the back of my heel. I have tried to flex it and bend it to break it in, but it is still uncomfortable. The knit uper breathes really well, but is made of a rough fabric, rough enough that I can feel it through thin socks. Finally the sides of the soles are grey, not white (as shown in the pictures) on the black model. They grey just doesn't look as good. Overall, they aren't very comfortable and don't look as good as I expected.

mjsobrepI noticed the same thing about the heel cup, but after manual flexing the heel and sole and wearing a few times, I can say that they are now perfectly comfortable. I just picked up another color!
