I have this preamp/amp. I use it on my computer preceeded by a FIIO USB E-18 dac and feeding NHT Zeros. I like it a lot. Just so you know where I'm coming from: my main gear is entirely Theta, Krell, Wadia, B&W, & Sennheiser, and I built my first stereo nearly 60 years ago.
Power output for this amp is stated at 22 watts RMS/40 Watts peak per channel...@ 4 or 8 ohms? Will the Audioengine N22 be capable of driving loads down to ~ 4 ohms without fail and/or having the protection circuitry kick in?

" What type of speakers work best with the N22 amplifier? The N22 is an efficient design and works great with any 4, 6, or 8 ohm passive speakers, including the Audioengine P4! " this is off the website. but i cant find the power into 4 vs 8 ohms. The audioengine P4 speakers they speak of are a 4 ohm speaker. hope that helps
How does this compare to the TEAC AI-101DA ? I've been looking for something that can play from my computer and drive both headphones and bookshelf speakers.

I'm actually looking for a unit that can power my bookshelf speakers via straight speaker wire (or speaker wire with banana plug) plus has a port on the front for headphones.
I see a lot of small units on here with a headphone jack on the front of the unit and outputs on the back, but they are usually RCA outputs, like the NuForce uDAC-3 DAC/Amp Combo that was just recently submitted to Massdrop. How do you hook up bookshelf speakers if the unit only has RCA cables? Do you need another amp as middle-man?

Ah, my bad. The K5 probably isn't what you're looking for. This would be better for powered bookshelf speakers.
Are these more powerful than the O2? I'm looking for something that can power the T-50RP Argon Mk3.

OK I understand I think. Both the AudioEngine and XtremPro I mentioned have the right class AB power and variable line outs that would control your powered monitors...but not a switch that would turn off your passive speakers. They would work simultaneously which is what you want if using the line outs to a powered sub...but not for your purposes. I will edit this if I think of something. Added: It think the switching between line & speaker outs will be difficult. On solution would be to get a Schiit Fulla 2 DAC/Preamp and then add any speaker amp you want that has a Volume Control....This N22 would work fine but you can find cheaper. The Fulla has both Variable Outs (to your monitors... they shut off when a headphone is plugged in) and Fixed (to your Speaker amp...its on all the time.. so turn the speaker amp off when not in use and control volume from the speaker amp.)

I have a Mackie Big Knob passive that I'm using now, with selectable inputs and outputs. So I think it may be a good option to simply add in a speaker+headphone amp, I'd just have to play around to find how high I need it to be for the amp. My subwoofer has pass throughs for my monitors, that would be the only issue as I'm not sure how I'd use it with the powered speakers.
