Overall impression? We use this for pour-over coffee and tea, daily
This is a great kettle, better than all the rest we’ve tried over the years. This prepares water for tea and coffee faster than any stovetop kettle we’ve tried, and has now lasted longer than any of the other electric options we’ve used. When you geek-out on coffee and tea as much as we do, temperature becomes increasingly important to avoid flash-heating and thus creating a bitter cup. The Bonavita provides an exact temperature control as well as a read-out that continues to display the water temperature as it cools down. One last note, and perhaps a warning to those that buy other electric kettles: my old favorite was a glass electric kettle, but for some reason — perhaps either due to the manufacturing process or some material used for packaging — they had a plastic smell that was imparted to the water. This kettle did not have that very off-putting olfactory nastiness which, of course, is great!
I would recommend this product.
Really love this kettle - I have both the 1L and the 1.7 for reference. I've compared it to other models that are both cheaper (Osaka from Amazon) and more expensive (EKG Stagg) and I've found this to be the perfect balance of price and performance. As with all kettles, you will have to de-scale every once in a while, but that is in no way the fault of this particular kettle. Temp readout is easy to use and see.
It's as good looking as I hoped. But for the price I would have thought it would have been heavy duty. The base us light as a feather and seems really flimsy. Even the plastic handle seems cheap. I was kind of shocked given the price.
Works as it should. I do have some concern about its long term durability, as the spout design appears rather fragile.
3 Months later: Has started forming a mineral crust at the junction of the SSbody and the black plastic base.
No sign of rust.
Got this to replace the 1L, which wasn't quite enough for everyone to have morning hot dranks. We love it. The gooseneck is fantastic for pour-over, just right for the aeropress, the handle has a little protrusion that helps keep control, and I'm going to buy another as a present for my sister. Temperature control is good, within one degree F according to my thermapen, and I haven't had any issues in a year with the 1L (nor have the folks I gave it to once we got the 1.7L 3 months back) or the new one.
Great electric kettle. If I could improve it in one way, it would be to be able to program it to turn on at a certain time (like a programmable coffee maker). Hold function works well. I don't use the timer since I have one on my scale for coffee brewing. Overall, does exactly what it says it will do. The pour rate is easily controlled, though it can be hard to get a steady slow flow when it is completely full. I've had it for about a year, and it still works just as well as when I got it.
