pvrseWhen/where did you get your DV? I noticed the Rhino label on yours.
Also, I see you have an AudioEngine D1. Are you using that as a DAC for your DV?
mindhead1I rotate between that and the red dragonfly depending on source, The D1 is actually really decent paired with the the DV, and yes, my DV is the Rhino VA-1, no difference just housed with a different badge essentially and came with some crap "vintage" tubes
pvrseOK... 2nd runner for half the price then?
I cannot bring myself to buy a tube that cost more than $100 without audition first, just for the premise of others saying it is much better ;-)
BTW, joined the drop last night, and will give stock tubes a chance before starting a tube-rolling-shopping-spree...
ZachikI cringed at the initial price also, but there was a return window and when I thought about the cost of trying different combos I'd probably end up spending more than $100. I have no regrets, because I'm no longer searching. I'm very satisfied with the Treasurer.
All that said, before I got the Treasurer I picked up a US made Tung-Sol 7236 ($30 on eBay) and a Russian made Tung-Sol 6SN7 GTB ($20 on tubedepot.com) and like that combo very much.
The difference between the Treasurer and the Tung-Sol 6SN7 GTB is in the warmth and low end. This is made evident when I mix and match The Treasurer and Tung-Sol 6SN7 with the Tung-Sol 7236 and RCA 6AS7G power tubes.
While I don't think the stock tubes are bad they are not as good as the upgraded tubes I have purchased in any combination. I periodically put in the stock tubes to remind myself why I purchased additional tubes in the first place.
Had I never tried other tubes, I would have been satisfied with the stock tubes. This is the crux of the problem with this hobby, resisting the temptation to try things.
mindhead1Great info - thanks!!!
I actually just left the drop, since I got a great deal on a Lyr3 with Tung Sol tube.
Will keep my eye on the next drop for the 336SE... Maybe join again (and stay this time) ;-)
mindhead1this might be kind of a dumb question but does the treasure fit beside the RCA 6as7g? I have the 6as7g and the stock tube with the treasure coming soon but there isn't much room between the RCA and the stock tube already. I'm just wondering if they can fit beside each other without touching.
pvrseI have the same combination in my DV at present.
The treasure arrived today, played with HP 6AS7 (GE) and currently with TS 6080.
The treasure has a slight left channel hum at present , certainly more noticeable on the Tungsol whereas the HP it is very faint.
