MusicFuelsYourSoulI was in your situation as well and I took the iPhone + TIDAL HIFI subscription path. The improvement over my older iPods was huge. Now I will upgrade it with O2/ODAC. If I will carry another device with me, be it a O2/DAC.

MusicFuelsYourSoulI'm not sure if there are other DAPs that I would recommend other than X5ii and X5-3, regardless of the price implied. I haven't tested all DAPs out there, but X5ii left me... impressed. Impressed is very little said about the experience I had with it and FiiO - both the DAP was amazing and FiiO were great in helping me out with any questions I had. It pushed me enough to take part in creating a custom UI for X5ii - this UI improved both visuals and speed / fluidity of the UI.
X5-3 has just been launched so I'm not sure about it yet - Haven't heard it - but if it is the successor of X5ii, then I'm pretty sure already sure that it's going to be awesome.

MusicFuelsYourSoulI'm having the same issue. 6th Generation iPod Classic loaded with ALAC music. It's paired to to a Fiio E12. I'd like a new DAP also but a battery replacement is cheap for the Classic. Can't find a DAP with enough power to be able to ditch the Fiio.

If I were to have around $300 to spend on a portable player with best bang for buck so to speak, would anyone have some recommendations for me? I have an iPod Classic 120Gb in perfect condition, just times have moved on...big time lol!
