Hey all - I wanted to get some advice. As I've settled into listening to these, I'm starting to hear more and more "crunch" in my mids and upper bass (the sound where it sounds like the headphones can't handle the level of noise and it sort of fizzles) even on fairly moderate volumes. It seems to be getting more pronounced, but it might be confirmation bias on my part. Any advice on this? I've tried it out with a DAC/AMP (Fiios I borrowed from a coworker) and that didn't really seem to do much except reduce the level of high-pitched fuzz in the background (which as I understand it is from the headphones not getting sufficient power). Additionally, the cord connecting my right cup to the main cable seems to be twisting naturally and I'm not sure why, given that the braided nature of the headphones was meant to prevent that. Should I reach out to Massdrop for a replacement, or am I being pedantic? Thanks MD community! :D

valorcubAny pictures? I have never heard of a braided cable coming undone, especially a insulated cable as the one on TH-X00. As for the buzz, what kind of source component are you using? I used to own a portable amp that ended up producing a serious amount of "buzz" after several years of use. Unless the drivers of the headphones are breaking apart or something came loose within the cups, the source component is most likely at fault.

valorcubWhat's your setup? From source to whatever you have down the chain.

slow.breathingSpotify (premium/HQ, so I believe it's a 320kbps stream) -> Adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-MHE-100-5-Right-Angle-Headphone-Adaptor/dp/B000068O6B) -> TH-X00's. I'm sure I'm either not describing it correctly or I'm missing an important component in this setup - I'm a bit of newbie to the audiophile scene, these headphones are my first foray in.

CosmopygianHere is a picture. It's a bit difficult to capture in a photo but the cable isn't "undone" as much as it is twisting in an odd way that causes it to twirl and loop around a bit annoyingly:

valorcubFrom the looks of it you need a DAC to clean up all that jitter/noise.
The DACs on laptops usually sound terrible: the highs sound harsh, the lows are weak/distorted. no bueno
So, in order to get the most of your headphones you'll need to upgrade the DAC. It'll make a big difference in sound quality after you do so. If you don't want to spend too much I wholly recommend picking up a fiiO E10K, It's won't break the bank and they sound great.
Hope this helps

slow.breathingAwesome! I really appreciate the advice. That's exactly what's happening - I'll investigate getting a DAC. Should I get a DAC/amp combo? Do these headphones need additional power from an amp?

valorcubI believe their impedance is rated at 25 ohms. So you can run they efficiently from your phone/laptop without a Amp. From what i read from other users, these headphones don't scale with an amp. I'd still go with a combo though, for the sake of convenience.

valorcubIf you can afford it, Chord Mojo has the best price/value ratio ever. It sounds amazing for its price.
