This is the first mortar i have bought and i guess i wasn't sure what to expect although i have found this to be very small and hard to use compared to a granite mortar and pestle that i have previously used

It's a good grater, but I prefer a granite mortar and pestle compared to the Japanese suribachi. A wider heavier pestle just makes easier work of mashing and grinding food. The base is too small making it unstable in use.

Well manufactured and easy to clean. I wish they would make a stainless steel model

A virtually perfect small suribachi, made of premium materials. Made better by the addition of a non-slip base and a clever and very useful grater top that fits snugly. Fills a useful role when processing amounts too small for large mortar/pestle.

This mortar and pestle works wonderfully! I had been looking for a good suribachi and this hits the spot in terms of quality, size, functionality, and the added bonus of a grater lid. The silicone foot is also a nice touch to prevent slipping on a counter top during usage.

I don’t know why I waited so long to buy a mortar and pestle. I guess it’s one of those purchases you don’t think about until you’re standing in the kitchen with a handful cardamom pods thinking, “You know what would make this process easier? A mortar and pestle.”
So when this dropped, I took a chance and bought it. And yes, crushing those cardamom pods IS a lot easier, as well as all those other whole spices I’ve started buying fresh, because it tastes and smells so much better. When you consider how easy it is to clean, and there’s a grater as well? It becomes a very easy purchase to justify.
