I think the price is a good one, isn"t it?

For me, I don‘t see any price merit for this drop. If I have to pay 20% of import tax, it is much more expensive than buying one at the local shop here in Korea, where the price is around US$550~560 for pernambuco.
This is a real pen. Sadly, this is what real pens cost these days--on Massdrop. They are less expensive elsewhere, if you do your homework.
As has now become customary, here is my review after test-driving the pen for a few months:
I purchased this pen in a recent drop. The fit/finish/craftsmanship is superb. No one is going to question that. The pen is gorgeous and you will get comments on it when you use it. The attention to detail is stunning. The cap band, the finial, the etched insignia under finial and above the clip, the clip, the barrel, the section, the look of the nib--all show an exceptional attention to detail. One of the best looking pens on the market.

The pen I ordered is the Platinum-Plated "Classic Series" with a Medium Oblique 18k gold nib (true-to-size western medium). My first reaction to the nib was I wish it was a size larger, but it may be because many of my daily pens use exceptionally large nibs. I'd chalk that up to mostly personal preference, but I still think for the heft and size of the pen it should be larger.
Paper: Rhodia lined
Ink: Mont Blanc Honore de Balzac limited edition blue (if you haven't noticed, this is my favorite ink)
Initial reactions:
- Flow is good, pen writes well and has no interruptions in flow even with fast writing or cursive.
- Line variation is quite good with this nib grind
- Pen has great weight distribution when not posted. However, pen feels too heavy and top-heavy when cap is posted. Pen is still on the heavier side when not posted, but feels good in the hand.
- Section is rather small for larger hands (long fingers)--you may feel cramping after prolonged use if you have Edward Scissorhands-like fingers. This isn't a deal breaker for me because I generally only write a page or two at a time.
- Clip is quite substantial, beautiful aesthetically, and has great tension (but not too much).
- Finial is etched and looks quite nice
While the writing is not as wet as I generally prefer, with a decent shading ink you should see some nice shading:

This is a close-up of "flex." Keep in mind, this is NOT a flex nib and since the nib is a soft 18K gold if you push this nib YOU WILL DAMAGE IT. However, with light (~1/2 of that needed for a ballpoint) pressure you get nice additional line variation with no interruption in flow or saturation. Feed keeps up nicely under all writing conditions. This is not even a semi-flex nib, I would classify it as a "soft" nib. It's worth repeating: do not push this nib.
This pen does have one major drawback. The nib "squeaks" when writing. It's smooth, but it squeaks. Similar to a nail on a chalkboard, but quieter. It is annoying and none of the standard tweaking (slight tine adjustment, light sanding, etc) has done anything to get rid of it. I'm not sure if this is a problem only with my pen or a larger issue, I've only owned ballpoints/rollerballs from these folks in the past (which are fantastic, but not a standard parker gel refill).
Bottom line: The pen is in the $400-$500 price point, which is an insanely competitive space with many good to great options (this pen fits in the "good" category). There are certainly better performing pens you can buy that have a little less "flash" in this price point. Ultimately, if you like the look, buy it, but if you're looking for the best (or a better) performing pen in this price point, you've got a ton of better options, and many are frequently offered on Massdrop at competitive prices.

FPH has a sale going now with these for $375 brand new...in case you need more

God no. I recently watched a Snakewood go for $400 on eBay. Sigh!
I have one that I bought myself as a gift when I graduated grad school. It's gorgeous, fits my hand, and writes beautifully, except that the nib size is a German fine -- meaning that I really should have gotten an extra-fine. If you are used to Japanese nibs, go down a size for your nib. If you are used to German nibs, then you will know what you are getting.
This was my grail pen for the longest time (14 months :p). Every time it dropped I lamented the fact that I could not afford it. I own it now. What I paid for it did not even come close to the price tag here, and I received mine with GvFC's beautiful wood case in matching finish. I love this pen and I love Massdrop, but the two are destined not to get along.
Seriously? $459.99? C'mon...It's possible to find better than this...if you look. I would LOVE to buy one, but it's gotta come down further.
And that's only for the Classic Ivory Anello ? And every other nib but Medium incurs an extra $30.00?
Sorry, but it's a pass this time....
marcelol
If you look further down the options you will find the other nibs at no extra charge.
MrSharkbait
Yeah I saw that, but not in the style of FP I'd be interested in...I currently own a Titanium Anello. I wouldn't mind an Ebony Anello, but I was looking for a Grendilla or Ebony Grenadilla...yet...at that price is still a bit much for what could be found elsewhere.
Not being snarky, just giving honest input for MassDrop to consider.

The group's bulk order arrived earlier to our warehouse in New Jersey and many of the individual packages have already shipped back out. However, upon taking inventory of everything received, our team was made aware of a backorder affecting a small handful of units. Rest assured, we've reached back out to the vendor to resolve this hiccup and expect to have the remaining units in our warehouse shortly.

I love the pen (got it in a previous drop) - but they shipped it with the wrong nib, and by the time I had realized it (the package sat unopened for a while because of reasons) it was outside the 2 week return window. As soon as you get it, double check your nib and make sure they attached the right one! (I asked for Medium, and they sent it with an Oblique Medium. Ended up paying extra from a different supplier for a proper nib, couldn't get used to the OM nib.)
Do you guys have Fine nib for the Grenadilla???
Think you've got the list of woods and finishes wrong: The sterling silver model is solid sterling cap, barrel and finger piece, and is considerably more expensive than the wood and plated models!
Jkbtoronto
Thanks for that clarification!
The "thin band of knurling" referred to is actually a process called coining...as in ' a single row of coining on the silver plated models, and twin rows of coining on the cap of the solid sterling silver model.
Is it just me, or does the price go up every time this pen is offered? I guess it will always stay on my wish list then.

I would jump in on this but funds are really tight right now.
I really want one of these in my collection but I recently purchased my second Conid which I sold off two Montblanc fountain pens to justify.
Hopefully next time.
It is difficult to make a choice due to the fact that the names are unfamiliar. How can I be sure what model I am ordering if I do not know the name/model match? there seems to be two colors of wood. ?????????
Lula
There are three colors of wood: Ebony is dark black. Grenadilla is a dark brown. Pernambucco is a lighter brown.
I have both the Ebony and the Grenadilla, and the Grenadilla is nearly as dark as the ebony (which was frankly a little disappointing). So far, these are the smoothest and most balanced of the pens I own.
aabdalla
Thank you so much.
A bit expensive!! A 149 or King of pen or Visconti is perhaps better value ... Having said that, it does have a certain look
Why did the price go up $50 from the last drop?
aabdalla
I don't know why the prices went up but the higher prices make this offer more expensive than can be readily and regularly found from other reputable vendors.

IMHO, the most elegant fountain pen ever made. I'm one of those who requested this drop, but I blew my pen budget on Deltas. I have been collecting books for over 20 years, its a psychologically rewarding hobby of long-term satisfaction. Pens, however, are the crack-cocaine of collecting.
Theroc
Absolutely agree! I purchased the GvFC Classic in the Grenadilla finish and it is an elegant pen. As another poster mentioned, Grenadilla is a very dark brown color and almost indistinguishable from the ebony. The pen is a very smooth writer and has performed perfectly since first inked. Based on my experience, I can recommend this pen without hesitation.
I'm strongly considering this pen and to have a quality oblique in my collection would be great, but before I would lay down quite a lot of money on a pen like this I just want to clarify if these are right handed obliques thanks.

I don't tend to rotate my pens when I begin to write so I've never been interested in the oblique nibs. The problem is that if you don't rotate, they won't work properly because you're missing the sweet spot. I almost always pick a broad nib or a stub nib, if available. I accidentally bought an oblique years ago not understanding their purpose and the only way I could get it to write properly was to purposely rotate the pen each time I began to write. If I recall correctly, it needs to be rotated approximately 45° to reach the sweet spot. It's my understanding that obliques were developed to compensate for rotaters.
mmg122
I do understand the reason as to why obliques are cut to the degree that they are, i just believe that the nature of a gold oblique has a tendency not to grab the paper, as all other obliques that i have used are steel. And i do love writing with a stub nib but i have the entire pilot parallel set so spending a lot on a stub is not really justifiable for me as i have a set and my writing is fairly small.
Why.
SenorPlatano
Why not.
What? No more wooden case?
jeb.cheng
Hey @jeb.cheng,
The Graf von Faber-Castell Classic Fountain Pen sample we received from our vendor never had a wooden case (I'm guessing something similar to LAMY's now-discontinued Dialog 3 FP case?), so that might be discontinued packaging from a while back. Sorry about that!
Exciting news group! We’re happy to report that all of the orders have been shipped out and are now on the way to you! Please allow 24-48 hours for tracking to get into the shipper's system and start updating.
