Seeing this in the Ultralight group sort of makes me question what Massdrop's definition of "Ultralight" is. This looks like a decent lightweight pack for a good price, but a 3lb pack designed to carry up to 40lbs doesn't fit within my understanding of ultralight, which is pretty much established to be base weights in the sub-10lb range, and most people packing that light aren't going to want a 3lb pack with 20 lbs of extra weight capacity
Anyway, not a big deal, I just think this is a better fit for the Outdoor category.

StepbystepEven the 55L on this drop at $135 is a great deal. I found mine on sale for $160 and would gladly pay that price again for another.

I currently own an Osprey 70 Aether, size medium. Which size would you recommend go with here ?

PozzoI have both the 55 and 45. I would go with the 55 as they are basically the same size. the 55 has a little more width front to back, which you can cinch down with the compression straps when not used. If you mean between XL/L and M/S, then whatever your measurements are 18-22" XL/L -- 14-18" M/S. Because the back panel is velcro, I think you can cheat half an inch or so (18-19" ) down from the measurements on the M/S as long as you don't overload it. I took the 45 winter camping as my Nimbus TA was late shipping from here and was amazingly able to hold everything. It held 36 lbs without a problem. They are great packs for anything less than 40 pounds.

PozzoI'd agree with Jbar but if you are on the edge of the two sizes you might want to go with the larger one. That's opposite of the advice I'd give for many packs but with this one the load lifters sit a little low, so being on the shorter end of the torso range adjustment will make them a little more effective. The frame design on this is pretty solid but the load lifters fall somewhere between lifters and stabilizers (like you sometimes see on daypacks with no real frame to provide stiffness)...so they are effective but not like what you're used to with your Osprey and most larger packs that are heavy haulers. The belt and harness are the same size for either model.

How would I measure my chest to decide between sizes?

MunkyadrianPacks aren't measured by chest size. You need to know your torso length. With a soft sewing tape measure and help from a friend, measure from iliac crest to 7th vertebra. That is your torso length.

Passed on this last time, pulled the trigger this time. Even with the slightly steep international shipping the 50% off msrp makes it still worth it. Great looking pack for extended dayhikes or light overnighters. Love that moss green colour!

Like it a lot although I haven't used it a bunch since I usually use smaller packs (my Lutsen is the 45L). Every time I put it on I get reintroduced to that pronounced lumbar pad, but I actually like it. I did consider both lightening up the plastic sheet with some careful holes/slots and possibly heating it to lessen that lumbar curve just a little, but that will necessitate some other trimming as well and I'm not sure it's that important to me to tinker with (although they do have replacement sheets available). When I got this the new Crown2 wasn't available yet, and I have the 38L version of that...if I were to do it again I think I'd opt for the Crown2 over the Lutsen, but the capacities between the product lines aren't the same and the Crown2 doesn't handle as much weight (does very well though). They're largely the same packs in most aspects...the re-fit belt did get slightly larger pockets on the Crown2 and both pockets are nylon fabric. The Crown2 also lost the inner bladder pouch but still has the hang hook...kinda wish it had the pouch but no big deal. Even if you don't use a bladder the pouch is handy for other small items. I'm surprised the Lutsen packs haven't been more popular because it's a really good design and carries great, very little to complain about. The lumbar seems to be the only real complaint I've heard from anyone anywhere, and that's been said about some other packs in the past too (old Gregory models come to mind)...love it or hate it I guess. The real strength is the re-fit belt, imho. The pocket mesh has been surprisingly durable on both.

StepbystepPrice is sure a lot better this time. $25 less than what I paid on my drop and that was already a pretty good price at the time.

Awesome deal! I already have an Osprey Exos 58 (which becomes 52L without the top lid) and a Klymit Modion 35 (which I can attach my tent to the outside). So I really don't need any more packs, but even with these two lightweight packs, I'm still tempted to get one of these Granite Gear packs here. I'm with ZionHikes1: What a steal!

Thanks Leo! Funny I have been looking at those two exact osprey packs as well as aether 60. Leaning heavily towards osprey for their warranty and the fact I can try them on (loaded). Since massdrop has no returns and I haven't found a storefront to try these GG packs. Been to 3 REI's , none of which carry GG packs currently.

PNWGUSThe GG Crown2 60 is ridiculously light, only 2.1 pounds, but it costs $200. The GG Lutsen is a pound more and it costs $125 plus $10 shipping, and it may hold heavier loads more comfortably. I love my Exos 58, but the downside is that the closer it gets to 30 pounds, the more uncomfortable it feels, specially on the shoulders. The best thing about, though, is the trampoline back, which is a must here in Hawaii, since it's too hot. The trampoline back and the 21 ounce weight is what's making me gravitate toward a Zpack in the near future (but that's $300-plus).

I bought the 45 on the last drop. I took it on a 3 night trip to the Lost Coast this spring. It carried a non-ultralight load (regular 2 person tent, MSR stove, etc.) pretty easily. My only complaints: the back ventilation was only so-so, the slot for hydration bladder is a little tight, and the hipbelt pockets are really close to useless (you could fit a bar in one and squeeze a smartphone in the other, but it's a tight fit). The hip and shoulder adjustment systems are excellent (I have a freakishly long torso). It's a really solid pack: I was a little worried about going for the 45, but it was perfect (I have an old Dana Design Terraplane that still carries huge loads like they're nothing for anything bigger).

It looks like it's about 25" high, a couple of inches taller than my black diamond daypack that I have repeatedly taken on planes as a carry-on. My guess is that you could sneak it on if it weren't super loaded up.

This looks like a great deal if we get more 89.99 commits. Looking at other sites and ebay for the 55L, it goes for 150 USED. 129 New is outstanding. Based on my research, looks like a great pack, definitely a winner!

Curious about the steep $40 shipping charge to Canada. I believe the recent Marmot 35L which is same size and similar weight ( actually a bit heavier, I think ) was $19.95.     There would also be a costly $30-$40 customs charge COD as well. Not even sure why this drop is open to Canada heheh. You'll end up paying more in the end.   --

Surprised to see only 1 person committed so far. This is the perfect "UL" scenario backpack if you go with a significant other. You need a perfect pack that can carry extra weight because yada yada yada. 40lb load at 3lb, so probably gravy in the mid 30s....think about it. I would totally jump on this deal if it wasn't for the fact that I recently grabbed 2 packs from ULA clearance (170$(camino2)/120$(ohm2.0)). (over the crown2 (assume rei coupon upcoming at 20% ~160-170$)
