Is everyone else’s estimated ship date July 17? I absolutely need this before July 22, so I’m a little worried that I won’t arrive in time. Any wisdom from experienced massdroppers?

I'm currently shopping for my first hiking backpack and am wanting some pointers. First, I am wondering what size would be best to choose. I will mostly be going on trips less than 3 or 4 days long, but would also like to be able to go on week long trips. Would a 48 liter pack be too small for this or could I make it work? Also, would this make for a good beginner pack or would I be better off going for another, like the Osprey Exos or something?

CptMilleniumIt mostly depends on the volume of all your gear. For a first pack you my want to look at something with an adjustable torso. A good place to start would be the massdrop x granite gear, or an osprey atmos.

A BV500 will fit horizontally in the Octal 50 (I have them both). Like everyone is saying here, make sure you have a good torso measurement. If you can I would go to REI or similar retailer and have them measure me for a pack and try some on while there.

To me, the quick-access side/water bottle pockets are one of the biggest selling points. I've gotten away from bladders and this permits access to water without doffing the pack. I first encountered these on my previous generation Exos, and it led me to purchase a Gregory Paragon 58 which has it on one side. The Optic has it on both sides. I haven't carried bottles horizontally as shown but I find it doable to pull the bottle out bottom first. I don't know about the strength of the mesh on this pack but I often carry two smart water bottles in the quick-access pocket on the Paragon. Given that this pack has two quick-access pockets, even if the pockets couldn't handle two bottles each, that's still 2 liters of available water which generally is a few hours worth of hydration. I've had the Paragon on my back continuously for up to 7-8 hours before stopping to filter water and camp (I slept very well that night). I don't hike fast but I try to just keep moving, and accessible food and water while on-the-move are critical to me making a decent number of miles by the end of the day.

Brett919It’s a feature Gregory has implemented in lots of their packs. Simple yet incredibly useful feature for people who don’t use water bladders.

gnarledcouleeI often find that simple little things like that become deal-makers when comparison shopping for gear. I can't do without it now!

At this price I pulled the trigger on the 55L women's small. My current shoulder season pack, a Thule Capstone 50L is similar in that is has the "trampoline" venting (which I love the feel of) but it has a serious limitation in that I can't fit the most commonly rented bear canister in it. The trampoline venting makes an S shape to the pack somewhat. I actually had to slightly reroute a trip away from the ADK high peaks area last year because of this - but didn't want to buy a pack that weighed MORE than the 47 ounces my current pack weight. Naturally when I saw these and the Osprey Eja come out I was excited.
I looked at many reviews and it doesn't look like I will have any bear canister problems with this pack...some of the reviews here note a BV 500 can fit horizontally in the 58L version. Should be the same in the size S - 55L version right? But I would feel a bunch better if someone could confirm.

Someone on one of the UL forums told me they use a BV 500 fine with this pack both vertically and horizontally. So I'm super excited to take this pack to bear country now! Lol
I'm going on a trip to Canada to bear country and they don't require cans but I may bring one just for peace of mind. Now that I can!

The_Sauceyou like it quite a bit then? How's it compare to the exos in your opinion? Any durability issues you can foresee?

WonkwonkWhen I bought the optic 48 I compared with my roommates exos 48. Besides the obvious similarities in layout design, one of the major differences I noted were that the Gregory had much sturdier/stiffer hip belt and shoulder straps. I don't mean stiffer in the sense that they have less padding. But if you try to squeeze the straps in your hand and twist, the Osprey felt much flimsier. The front main stretch pocket holds a crazy amount of gear, despite the tapered bottom The lumbar pad is more pronounced on the Gregory as well, so it fits right into your back like a glove. Did a 2 day 27 miler few weeks ago and barely noticed the pack.

Looks like a good pack, but after doing a bunch of research I'm holding out for the zpacks arc blast / arc haul.
The zpacks bags are also ventilated, and are more than 1.25 lbs lighter. You also can drop the otherwise mandatory pack cover (another 4 ounces, and never full coverage) because the zpacks arc is waterproof (nearly so as shipped, and can be effectively seam sealed with ease making it fully waterproof.
About the only thing you give up in exchange for that extra ~1.5 lbs is hip belt pockets (which you can add) and of course the zpacks costs more. Note that the gripstop fabric on the arc haul is both waterproof and more durable then Gregory / osprey fabrics.

foobar5Zpacks bag frames have a reputation for breaking. Not sure if they've improved the design recently. Their customer support can also be horrendous.
Some people really love them though. Just a heads up.

publicI recently returned from the Himalaya. 30 days trekking up to 18,000 feet using the ACR- haul zip. Weight was about 12 kg. Incredible pack that handles some pretty rough treatment. Cannot recommen more highly.
