I have a 1990 Mazda Miata (MX-5) - does anyone think it would be possible to place the 3L bottle in the magazine/map holder behind the seat and still use the drinking tube?

Dr.McCoyAre you making like a Mad Max/Fury Road-esque style Battlecar in which you will be properly fueled/hydrated? Do you like to get Shiny and Chrome, by chance?

@TinCanFury & @b0mbaman.
The main difference between the Platypus and Hydrapak reservoirs is the main material used. Platypus uses Polyethylene which can be described as firm and creates sharp edges at welding points. Whereas Hydrapak uses TPU (Tough Polyethylene) which can be described as floppy and soft, comparable to food grade silicone.
Advantages of TPU is the lack of sharp edges potentially cutting your pack and that it's so malleable that you can invert the reservoir for washing and put it in your dishwasher. The larger capacity models from 2L and upwards feature a blue centre baffle which stops the ballooning effect when full, but can also be unclipped for when you want to invert the reservoir for washing.
Reservoirs can build up mould quite easily if you're not diligent and especially if you put sports drink in there. The ability to invert and wash in the dishwasher makes it a very hygienic hydration system.

I'm also interested in research regarding leaching in all of the popular bladder style hydration systems.

M_at_oI haven't seen research specific to bladders, but in general you can minimize exposure by not letting water sit in the bladder for long periods, avoiding hot or acidic beverages, and replacing when you start to notice the taste getting pronounced.

anyone compare this to Platypus' similar options?

TinCanFuryI'd like to find out more about how this compares to Platypus too. Anyone that has experience with both?

Anyone wonder why insulating materials are black rather than white or silver? Considering heat transmission relevant in this situation only occurs via conduction and radiation, black absorbs radiated heat and the material has its own conductive property – black could *potentially* be good for preventing freezing IF it is a good conductor of heat, i.e., NOT an insulator; black would NOT be good to prevent tube contents from getting warm when coolness is desired unless it is a lousy conductor and exceptional insulator, which is unlikely. Really, they ought to provide two sheaths to cover each situation.

CromulentThe Insulation is for prevention of freezing as you suggested

CromulentYeah, more for keeping it from freezing than keeping it cool. That said, I've used black covers for years and they do a surprisingly decent job of keeping the tube water from getting hot, contrary to what one would expect. If it's really an issue you can pick up tan, sage, or blue ones from other vendors.

Can anyone speak to the taste of the water from the Hydrapak? I have Camelbak's brand new one and have tried every possible method for removing the plastic flavor to no avail. I can eliminate it for several hours by soaking it with a baking soda/vinegar solution before filling but anything longer and that nasty taste returns. I read many reviews on reservoirs before purchasing the Camelbak and so few mention any flavor and some reported no flavor. Either people are lying or just don't care about plastic flavored water.

FuzzymuzzleYes plastic taste is there but not as bad as a camelbak. I've switched to this from my 4 year old camelbak. This isn't as bad compare to the camelbak, it isn't as strong. I only use mine when pack weight is really an issue and I have to carry high volume, otherwise I'll try to stick to my titanium bottles for low volume or multiple SS when pack weight isn't an issue.

arislanI have a brand new Crux Camelbak...said to be way better than the older ones but again, to me it's pretty nasty within several hours. Pretty inconvenient to have to soak it with baking soda and vinegar so often. My plain Camelbak water bottle barely needs to be cleaned and has zero taste. Can't wait till the tech catches up to my taste.

Can someone at Massdrop check the shipping calculator? Shipping one item is $3.50, but two is $7.75 (more than double?!?)? And three is also $7.75? Huh?

Do yourselves a favor and get a Source water reservoir (and their excellent Universal Tap Adaptor). It's the best I've found (and I've used most of the other competition) and they have really good customer service to boot.

I haven't any direct affiliation with them, I am just a satisfied user. I recently finished my thru-hike of the AT using a Source 3L bladder and the UTA and still use it for mountain biking , other (non-long distance) hikes, paddling, et cetera. Having used most other brands I just recognize theirs to be a superior design and having dealt with their customer service for a part needed for the attachment of my filtration system I'm certain that they'll take care of me in the future should the need arise. I just figured that I would share my good experiences with them here, so maybe Massdrop might consider offering one of theirs in the future...if the price was right (and they are kind of spendy) I'd buy another one.

M.a.vI have similar experiences with platypus. Their products haven't disappointed me in the 10 years that I've been using them. The Big Zip LP is really durable and has a goof format.

SkonOfVulcanI don't think Hydrapak does unless they recently added them to the line. Camelbak and Osprey both have sealing quick disconnect versions, Osprey being the better value, or you could pick up the Sawyer kit, which is just straight through flow with no sealing. The CPC company makes most of these fittings and you can buy them from somewhere like US Plastics or McMaster-Carr, but the pricing/shipping is kind of a killer.
