Sometimes I'm able to find where the money would be in something like this. But this thing.... It's literally just two pieces of aluminum and two screws. The design isn't even complex. I feel bad for anyone that spends 80 on this thing.
I think it's funny that a lot of people are complaining about the price. You do realize how expensive Titanium is right? Even if you are able to find some magical unicorn that gives it away for free, you are now stuck with having to machine it. Hahaha. Go ahead, seriously, you'll have fun. You're going to be breaking plenty of cutters in the process (some of which are worth at least $30 alone) and even if you're willing to go through this, I can guarantee you won't get as nice of a finish as what they've managed to achieve. Trust me, I know. I've worked with Ti and it's a bitch. The price is more than ok.
Can someone throw light on what the difference between this and the "Key Smart" product which was on drops here? That is made of aluminium (and colored) and hovers around 30$ with no string attached like bottle opener/usb and can hold up to 5 keys in Out of box version. I understand this product out of box holds upto 12 keys and is made of same(?) aluminium. These are the differences I found and could not understand the real difference in the price between the two.
whackoThe KeySmart is fine for what it is, but it's also a thin, flimsy bar of aluminum at that price, and it doesn't exactly stay together over time. I have one. Mine tends to torque FAR out of alignment when I move certain keys, causing them to bind. It also gets loose after just a week of daily use. I've had to solve that with some blue Loctite. Further, I don't like how far my keys stick out from it. The two pivot points are directly across from each other, which means there's basically no overlap between the keys and the device body. Maybe that's by design but I don't care for it. Keybar appears to solve all those problems for me.
KeySmart might be great for you but that doesn't mean it's right for everyone. Feel free to talk it up in the next KeySmart group buy.
mcousinsIf you look into the pricing options when you hit the "Join Now" button the only Keybar that is actually $62 is the Carbon Fiber + Titanium version. All of the others except the standard aluminum version are cheaper than the prices you can get on the Keybar website.
Having said that I don't know why MD decided to raise the price of the standard aluminum Keybar to $47 rather than keep it at or below $45 like on the Keybar website. The Keybar website also offers $2.50 shipping so if you decided to get the standard Aluminum Keybar you would still be paying about $1.50 more.
It would be nice if MD were more transparent about their pricing for these things. More and more often they are offering merchandise with different prices all contained in one drop. It would be nice if you could see those prices and how they would become lower before hitting the "Join Now" button. For instance, will the price of the Aluminum one drop significantly if enough people join? I don't know because this information isn't presented anywhere.
I've got titanium, carbon fiver and the copper ones. Thinking about getting aluminum so I can mix and match some color. Does anyone know how well the hydrodipped finish holds up? My other ones hold up awesome but worried about the aluminum.
This is horribly overpriced for what you get. This is almost equal to the cost of a TITANIUM KeySmart. I recently backed a new Kickstarter for a new company producing these. You might want to check them out - KeyDisk Mini.
Aluminum ones not doing anything for me! Picked up a G-10 off the site along with a deep carry pocket clip. Also have a Copper, Carbon fiber and Titanium one as well. Got a few of these.. really want to see the machined titanium ones dropped! Got a good deal on the Copper one on here a while back.
That's probably why its lasting longer. The ones from key-bar direct are annodized aluminum which is fairly robust.. but the ones offered in this drop are Hydrodipped.. which does not seem to last as long.. another fellow on here said his Hydrodipped key-bar wore off almost completely in a month. It was a different hydrodipped finish, however.
I don't know if I am the only one interested but:
Aluminum, 1.4 oz
Carbon Fiber / Aluminum, 1.15 oz
Titanium, 1.6 oz
Carbon Fiber/ Titanium, 1.4 oz
I got the numbers from each link on the website http://www.keybar.us/products/
Good to see a drop and reviews on something like this. I have always disliked key rings and such for carrying keys. I've wanted a practical solution for keys as they are used daily and have been severely overlooked in modernization. I wanted something that would not deter from practicality of having a piece of metal on your person for a good amount of the day. I also don't want to go a technological route via an app on my phone... (which could get frustrating if the app was force closing or my phone was dead, etc. But I could see this being more mainstream in the future.)
I have owned a keybar for almost a year now. I was driven here by a comment on instagram so I wanted to check out the MD site. The keybar is an excellent product. I am very glad I bought one. I researched the keysmart too and while it is a good idea it simply looked cheap and not very well designed. I preferred the design of the keybar and the choices of aluminum, carbon fiber and titanium. I settled for the carbon fiber/aluminum design. I love the belt clip, very sturdy. After having the Keybar for a year I will never do without one again. Somehow it just make my key use so much simpler and faster. I wish mine would wear out so I could get another one with one of the really cool designs, but that not going to happen. Mine looks as new as the day I bought it. I am not one to spend money for no reason so I guess I am stuck with the keybar I have for life! lol
Spend the money and be happy...if you need a key organizer and who doesn't you will be very satisfied. BTW-the guy who thinks he can make one of these himself probably could, but it will look like he made it himself. Mine looks cool and it works!
