I guess I'll leave my final honest opinion here for all to see:
These are some great sleeper headphones. Period.
I was expecting garbage. Cheap knockoffs of a headphone that I could not afford to search out, bid/buy, and wait. I also wanted something different. Something that very few others had. (mostly) Everyone has heard of M50s, 770s, K7XX, TH-XX, Brainwavz, even the Fidelios that these are supposed to model.
I've never owned Fidelios and I probably never will. Therefore the statement from Massdrop's site, "the Lasmex L-85 headphones should make fans of the discontinued Philips X1 very happy," means nothing to me. However, for this price and for what they deliver it is astonishing what I have stumbled across.
My ranking scale of preferred headphones (the ones I currently own) are as follows: DT 990, Lasmex L-85, DT 770, K7XX, SHP 9500, ATH-AD900x, NVX 1000, Thinksound ON1, T20RP, ATH-M50x, ATH-AG1 (headset), some others I can't remember right now, HE-350. Why are the L-85's so high up on this list of other great headphones?
Let me start by saying I consider headphones by experience, not by sound. The presentation of these headphones is quite nice for it to be so cheap. Nice box, the included 2-length cables terminate in non-proprietary, metal encased, removable 3.5mm jacks (although sproingy) with quarter inch adapter. The build actually has some metal to it, although I believe the earcup retention system is plastic. Overall, they are smaller than average and are solidly built. The clamping force is not too tight and they have great stock earpads for cheaper headphones.
The sound signature seems a bit v-shaped, with a lot more bass than I was expecting. I made a comparison to the SHP 9500 where the highs practically match but there is a greater emphasis on the bass in the Lasmex. And it's good, clean bass. It's not DT 770 clean, but they're closed back so I can't compare the two directly. Midrange is accurate and female/high pitched male vocalists are a blast on these. They have soundstage and great imaging, so nothing really to complain about there.
So should you spend your money on this? Well, it depends on what you're interested in. The Lasmex were my 11th headphone, so I wanted something different that no one else had that was special to me. However, if you don't already have a pair of 9500 and were trying to decide between the two, get the 9500 because you don't need to go through Massdrop and a few weeks to get those (and they are a bit cheaper, too).
That's the last I'll say. Now to wait for the TH-x00 Ebony to get here.
