This is an impressive bag
This bag is made for the long haul. All of the rivets are perfectly placed, and everything is well put together and well stitched. The bag is big, but not as big as you might think. Holds my surface laptop, files, a tablet, and extras with plenty of room. But it's not a soft shell messenger bag, so it won't expand too much to haul your entire office with you. The bag itself is heavy because of the thick leather. The leather is naturally distressed, and I've already put a couple of scratches on it after a few days of use. But that's going to happen - character, right? My only quibble is that the shoulder strap could be wider. It's fine, well made, and comfortable, but the strap itself seems thin compared to the sturdiness of the case. Highly recommended. Color: Mahogany.

I have had he pleasure of buying just about every LM Product made available on Massdrop, inclusing more than one color/ version of the Calhoun. All the LM products have amazing craftsmanship and never fail to draw envious looks from men and women alike but I have to say the Calhoun is perhaps their finest leather product and continues to be improved with recent iterations. I already have a Calhoun in Walnut which has been an heirloom ckass piece for me. I'll be joining this drop for the newest iteration of the Calhoun in a new color.

JstryderLooks like you have 'a problem'! I'm about to have the same problem in that I feel I need another couple of Calhouns in my life! My first was Mahogany (version 2). I'm looking to add Rustic Pine and Dakota Tan or Crazyhorse if they re-offer. I was just in the hospital for 8 days and every day a doctor or resident would come in and spend more time asking about the bag than about me! It's flattering but weird. I guess there must be a thriving Leather Bag or One-Upmanship club at this hospital. Sorry, that was two hospitals. "So Doc, will I be okay?" "Well, you do have that smashing bag that goes with my Oxfords..." "But will I be...okay?" "Well, if I were you, I'd get two more Calhouns and call me in the morning (to tell me where I can pick up that Mahogany you have)--seriously." "Thanks, Doc! You have a pretty complex health care system here: I can tell..."

Incredible workmanship and quality
Important quality update: see below It's not often I come across a leather product like this. It's a gorgeous, heavy, classy piece of work. It's stiff and solid right now, but I can tell it'll be holding up really well over the years. I can't overstate how pleased I am with the quality and the construction. I keep glancing at it from across the room. It smells amazing. I keep thinking of excuses to go carry it around outside. I really can't think of anything even minor to take away from it. It doesn't have the massive organization that some satchels do, but then that's a function of it's design. And there are ways around that. I don't really see myself adjusting the front buckles, but the overall design would suffer if they weren't there, I think. It's also reasonably heavy, but then it's not a modern material intended to be lightweight. It's stiff and rigid at the moment, but time will help with that. I waited months for this drop to come up again after skipping out on the last one. I do not regret pulling the trigger on this, not one bit. If you like classic-looking accouterments, this is 100% the bag for you. 2.5 month update: Most of what I said still holds, but there are a few things I'd like to add to my review: The one thing that I really, really, wish I had known before getting this was the leather finish. I don't know a lot about leather, but the finish LM used for this is supple and smooth and soft.. which means it scratches very easily. After I started carrying the bag daily, it began to accumulate little scratches and dings and I couldn't figure out what they were. I eventually realized the marks were from my fingernails dragging across the leather. I tend to keep my nails pretty short (I pick at them otherwise), so it came as a shock that such a relatively light pressure was enough to mar the finish. It makes me wonder at the logic here -- you either have a soft, luxurious feel that scratches up quickly, or you go for a finish that is resistant to scratching and doesn't feel as nice. Frankly I'm a little irritated that the gorgeous finish pretty much only lasts until you actually start using the bag. If you plan on getting one of these satchels, reconcile yourself with the fact that it will gather marks like your spam folder gathers spam. The next issue is significantly less important: the closure straps could probably use another hole or two. As it stands, it's sometimes a struggle to close the top flap. I find myself having to lie the bag down and press on it to get enough slack to clip it closed. The snaps are incredibly satisfying though. The shoulder strap attachment points are well designed, but it does mean that for the reasons above, if the bag is hanging by it's strap and has any amount of stuff inside it, you can't really rotate the bag far enough while there is tension on the strap. Opening it is easy while hanging, but closing it pretty much always has to happen while the bag is lying on something. I still love my bag and plan on keeping it at my side for many years, but these are a few things I wish I had known going in that would have set my expectations a lot better.

Solid Bag
This bag is well made and fits what you need on the daily. It fit my needs perfectly and I know it will last for many years to come. Cons, it is a little tight if you were to use it as a school bag and had multiple books and It's also a little heavy if you needed to drag it across town.

Very well made, perfect size and looks great
I'm impressed with this bag. Please note the internal dimensions as this is not comparable to a traditional messenger bag (I carried a timbuk2 medium messenger for years, and it is enormous compared to this). However, it's ideal as a briefcase to lug around a laptop, notebook and a couple other small items. It feels and looks like it will last forever.

Great quality
This thing is a beautiful beast. Very good quality. Only missing thing is a carryon luggage sleeve on the back to slide it over your luggage handle.

I’m 6 months into having this satchel. Use it every day as a computer bag. It’s been all over Europe and the US with me. It’s a terrific bag. Well made. Very durable. I haven’t been precious with it so it’s got some patina and light wear and tear but that looks good in the Dakota Tan. Even with how much I travel and use it, it feels like it’ll be solid for many years.

I wrote more detailed reviews of the original version of this bag and the newest (October 2018) version in the Discussion section. In short: An amazing bag that is beautifully made and built to last a lifetime. It has a great look that works with formal or causal wear and I've gotten many compliments on it. LM is a fantastic company and works hard to take care of their customers and is constantly improving their products.

I have the Rustic Pine and it is stunning. It is my ANALOG edc - journals, pens, letter writing supplies, book. Wallet, phone, keys. This leather is gorgeous and the bag matched perfectly my fav ‘crazy horse’ leather journal.

heartsleeve310Thank you! I have the Mahogany (which is also very nice) but was trying to visualize the Rustic Pine. I will gift my Mahogany in a heartbeat if LM includes the Rustic Pine next drop!

I wrote a review a year ago (before they had reviews) so it's in the comments section. Mine was from an early run which included the original Chestnut leather (not the current pebble one) and I'm so glad I chose that particular leather as I'm not fond of the pebble effect.
For some reason (to my benefit) I didn't encounter any of the issues brought up by a few of the early adopters. My 15" ASUS laptop fits in just perfectly with room to spare (no squeezing it in) and the shoulder carry strap attachment points on the side don't really rub up on the cover. Yes the original inside leather sleeve that attaches with snaps won't fit any of my A4 paper but I'm using it for other stuff like cables.
If I could change one thing retrospectively, it would be to make the front pocket a lot deeper and reduce the number of pen holders. There's a ton of space below this pocket which is somewhat of a waste but on the up side I don't get to cram my entire life in the bag. Most of computer networking tools are in another bag which stays in the boot of my car so I really just need an AC adapter and power cable plus a corded mouse to live in the Calhoun.
If I was really worried about scratching my laptop I would just purchase one of those neoprene sleeves.
Bottom line, this review is for one of the older satchels but the overall quality, design and craftsmanship is to behold and be applauded.
