too expensive -- the spirit of massdrop is supposed to be value, aka price/performance. its the reason we team up and W A I T for this stuff..
ive seen FOCAL ELEAR on sale for $649 numerous times, so why am i paying $799 for a paint job and pad swap?
reachingDid you even look at the measurements? It's clearly not just an Elear. Those measurements are way closer to the Clear than the Elear, so there's clearly more going on here than just a pad swap, because even Elears with Clear pads don't measure that close to Clears. I had the same initial reaction but from the look of the graphs they're basically offering us a Clear for almost 50% off.
zandm7exact same drivers as the elear -- watch the headfi video.
and, while i appreciate any other tweaks such as damping materials and venting to create a better sound, its still a bit paradoxical -- since when is its massdrops job to 'fix' high-end headphones and rebadge them at a premium-- thats like a weird luxury service no one really wants... what we want are 'mass drops' lol
either way its a sick headphone and i would be deeply considering it at $649 or less. not $799
reachingDrivers are not everything when it comes to the sound of a headphone. Damping and venting are pretty much just as important when it comes to tuning; just look at all the vastly different-sounding T50RP mods out there.
I too would love a $649 or less pseudo-Clear, but I don't think this $800 price is at all unreasonable given what we're getting here.
reachingEh.. it doesn't add a huge value compared to the elear but two premium cables w/ one terminated in xlr plus the clear pads (if those are thr pads they are using) for $150 doesnt seem the worst. You're also not taking into account the R&D these may have taken to get that sound signature.
I'm not saying these are in fact "an amazing massdrop value" but you shouldn't judge it without hearing it. Massdrop has tweaked things to better fit the community before, nothing to be outraged about yet.
zandm7HD 800 is another good example. The drivers are very fast and technically capable, but the enclosure is problematic in creating that lower treble spike.
