Kinda ‘spensive for this type of shoe.

Horween leather is absolutely a guarantee of quality. Not that there aren't other great leathers out there, but Horween, especially their CXL, is certainly among the top and with good care will last for decades.

haha, completely agree there! But boat shoes, camp mocks and bluchers are a pretty safe bet.

Wondering if anyone can compare these to the Gustin boat shoes?

You're welcome. Like I said, it's just a guess; it could certainly be Rancourt. (e.g., I'm fairly certain Rancourt does Eastland's "Made in Maine" collection.)
Anyhoo, for pima1234's original question: I think you'd be comparing the OSB's to either Rancourt or Quoddy, since it's probably one of those two that makes the Gustin boat shoes. All of them use CXL and the quality from any of those manufacturers is going to be top notch. (I can personally vouch for the quality of OSB boots and Rancourt penny loafers.)

I had read that Highland was making their mocs and PW Minor was making at least their Trench line, but that was a few years ago. Honestly, the Trench line is my favorite from OSB, but I want to try a pair of their hiking boots.

Glad to see these here. Hoping for some more serious shoes from the same maker.

There have been some, and ones they don't offer regularly outside of Massdrop. OSB certainly make excellent quality footwear and belts. Glad to see them here.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, but I mentioned “overseas” because the cost of labor in the US is so high, in part because shoemaking here is now a close to being a cottage industry. The once thriving handsewn moccasin industry in Maine is almost gone. So yeah, some people do think there’s value in helping preserve the industry that developed these styles to begin with. Regarding the leather, Chromexcel is widely regarded as the gold standard of bovine leather for rugged footwear. It costs twice what many competing leathers cost. Reasonable people can debate the relative impact on quality of these things, but the impact on the cost is irrefutable.

mikewilkieNice leather, more expensive than other types, but not inherently stronger or tougher than others. Like a lot of things "widely regarded as the gold standard" it turns out to be 2 parts true, 5 parts hype, and 3 parts Kool-Aid.

jwuligerHi! OSB is recommending a half size down if you plan to wear these sockless or with with a thin sock. The leather will stretch a bit as you wear it. If you want more room for thicker socks, I'd recommend your normal size.

It's like massdrop hates people with small feet. They never have sizes below a 7. Oakstreet is fantastic, but you have to size down quite a bit to get a good fit with this brand. Sigh.

TomasVOK, I am out this time. I've been waiting for these and the beefroll loafers that I missed last time. If you can get them again I am in.

I'm having a little bit of trouble differentiating between the natural and the brown - is the natural just a bit lighter?

DayTripper0618Natural is completely undyed, so natural variations in the leather are present. They start lighter and get darker over time.
