Well suited for travel, street, and portrait photography, the Olympus M. Zuiko 12–40mm f/2.8 will quickly earn its place in your everyday kit Read More
And I found the stop points. They are enabled once you change to full manual focus by pulling in what Olympus calls the "manual focus clutch." One gotcha with Olympus. If you put a lens into manual focus and then put another lens on the camera body, the camera stays in manual focus. It is quite annoying the first time it happens.
Oh damn. Oh HOT DAMN. I want this. Olympus makes fantastic zoom lenses, and this 2.8 lens would essentially be a lens for everything.
Only reason I can hold back is i've got this range covered. What I want is some small bright primes: a fast portrait lens, and a fast "normal" lens like the 20mm f/1.7 panasonic or even a ~17mm "street" lens. I also want a wide-angle zoom like the 9-18mm.
Great wide to medium telephoto lens that really feels the part of a Pro lens. I love that I can shoot in the rain and snow without wrapping it, though I still bag it when I shoot underwater. This is the most affordable skip-to-the-flagship standard zoom I remember seeing.
Pairs really well with the 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro, though I often wish there was a 10mm overlap rather than meeting at their extremes.
Olympus' 12-100mm f/4.0 Pro has just been released, and I'd consider it a better option for anyone who wants only one lens to handle, but this drop's lens is smaller and much lighter, and it gives a full stop of additional light for half the price of the new f/4.0.
I've had this lens for 18 months. At this price you can't go wrong. This lens very sharp and great color. "THE PRICE IS RIGHT"!! Yes, it is grey market, but at this price you can self insure the lens. I have bought a lot of grey market items and not one required any repair work except one it!! That was after 10 years of use!
teacher447Agreed, I bought this lens secondhand on craigslist for $500 (no warranty) and it's the lens on my camera 90% of the time. For the money, you really can't beat the performance of this lens.
Oddly this seems to be the only PRO lens from Olympus that ever gets discounted to this extent.
teacher447Just realize that for some grey market stuff, the importer will NOT repair it, no matter what.
So you have to find an independent repair shop who will repair it, despite the importers restriction on repairing grey market gear.
If you can't repair it, then the purchase is a one shot deal. If it breaks, throw it away.
Check the importers repair policy first, so you at least know where you stand.
KoskoConsidering I only have the 17mm f/1.8 for my OMD-EM5 m2 this drop is perfectly timed! haha. If anything I wish it was later so that I could save up. Wallet's tight right now.
Koskoi feel the same way, but as @eunu has mentioned, it is a great lens for those getting into m43 shooting. i'm still on the original em5 and had this lens from the moment it was released...but i found that i preferred my primes (mostly due to size) so sold it last year. currently, i have either the 20mm f/1.4 or 75mm f/1.8 on my em5...would love to add the 7-14 one day.
This should have specifically been listed as a grey market item with no warranty. I'm pretty disappointed in massdrop for this. Had I known that was the case, I would have purchased it from a source that provided a warranty option. I will be thinking twice before I use massdrop again, especially if they're going to avoid stating where their supplies are coming from.
ScottI also would like to know the answer to this. If there is no warranty, then this doesn't seem much different than buying on the gray market for cheaper (EBay or something).
I'd be in on the drop...If I didn't already have this, A really great lens. And compared to it's 4/3 format big brother, the 14-35 f/2 lens--this one is quite a bit more compact. I'm also still on the prime wagon. This'll cover my mid-ground nicely. I've a portrait lens coming in, and if I get my hands on a nice super-wide prime, and a bright standard...I'll be happy for a while.
