So on the Approach version the bags or not removable? Also are all the bags removable on the Palisades version? I would use the bags sometimes but think just the harness would be very useful when I'm not.
pdkinzlerPalisades with the packs off is the Web Master harness with some buckles added on the sides. The buckles are tucked in to pockets and mostly covered. A really nice detail. The packs have a small mesh harness that rests over top of the main harness and then they buckle in to the harness.
Palisades they are all removable. The packs on the Palisades are also a little nicer with some organization built in. The Palisades also includes Camelbak style water bladders.
I have not used these much as I don't like my dog carrying that much weight. (They work great for myself in a Mystery Ranch Hip Monkey though).
The triangular bags help with mobility like ameaney said. I had a Mountain Smith dog pack with square bags and did not work very well.
The harness on the Ruffwear also works much better for my dog than anything else I've seen or used. I've always had boxers and many products don't work well due to their body shape. I also really limit the amount of weight I pack because boxers are very prone to hip dysplasia.
All of the pack systems and harnesses are well designed with nice details. The reflective piping is great for safety with urban dog walks. If you let your dog roam off leash, you can hit it with a flashlight to keep track of your dog walking in the woods at dusk.
DannyMilksis it possible to get the medium harness with the largest side bags they make? need a setup for wi ter hikes where he needs to carry more gear. im currently using a diy saddle swapped older style REI bag setup.
I have the Palisades pack that is similar but with removable packs. The harness portion gets used often and has held up for years. His old Ruffwear harness, basically the same minus buckles for the pack, was used for 3 years. I still use it as a backup. The only reason I replaced it is because my dog has short hair that embedded itself in the harness lining and I couldn't get the harness sufficiently cleaned of dog hair.
My dog is now 8 years old and the grab handle is really useful when he is tired and needs some help jumping up into the truck. I harness him in for safety with a full size locking carabiner attached to the harness, a Shockles leash, and another carabiner to the truck cargo tie-down.
Ruffwear stuff is very well made and worth the premium prices.
Fate.Onedo you find the angled shape of the bottom of the pack awkward? I have a few of the rectangular REI packs and the shape is great for holding things, but it seems all the other dog packs have the triangular shape which seems like it would not be as useful for holding gear?
TinCanFuryHave a Palisade - never had a problem with the shape. Of course it depends on what you are trying to cram in there. I think the shape makes it easier for the dog's mobility.
