I gave up on Seiko Kinetics and gave mine away (not this model). The worst of both worlds in my opinion. A pointless idea Seiko should have dropped years ago. Could never get mine charged up past 'about to die', even if I shook it for literally hours on end. Kinetics won't' charge up on watch winders, either. Might be okay of you wear the same watch every day nonstop, but I'd avoid kinetics for occasional wear. Just my ten cents worth.

You need an "swinging" winder like an Orbita or Rapport London for a kinetic (A bit expensive, but worth it). Or buy the rotor cup assembly (includes the watch pillow) from Orbita ($39) and use an Arduino + stepper motor to make your own.

Ugh...like a need another arduino project.
"Inspired by military-issue watches of the 19th century, Seiko’s Kinetic Field Watch features a simple yet utilitarian dial typical of its forebears"
Proof-read your copy please! Styled after 20th century military issue. Teddy Roosevelt didn't charge San Juan Hill wearing a wrist-watch like this. LOL! There were no wristwatches available to Generals Grant or Lee.
Need more green on green
I bought two of these for my kids, wanting them to have analogue [edit: and waterproof so they needn't be taken off and lost] watches and not wanting to buy essentially disposable digital watches. These were really bad. One never kept time from the beginning, the other broke after a few months. I've had a Seiko Kinetic for about 15 years that I love, so don't think I'm biased against these. The Field Watches just are, in my specific experience, terrible.
Sorry, but this is far to pricey. You can buy this watch for $120AUD online. That's about $80USD ... just saying.
Jamesony
Where exactly can you find it for $120 AUD, care to help me out?
Jamesony
Can you please send a link for the $80USD priced watch? Thank you!
Does the second hand sweep or tick?
gmac1957
Tick
gmac1957
It ticks once per second. Bulova makes a military style watch with a sweeping second hand, ticks 16x per second I believe.
For those considering this drop--there is no warranty information listed in the description, which means there is no warranty (either manufacturers or Massdrop).

Sketchy! I got in on the Seiko Flieger SNK Watch drop and had it RMA'ed within 3 weeks of use. Luckily it was fully warrantied. Been loving that watch and was considering this drop as well until I realized it might not be warrantied. I wonder if Massdrop could chime in on this.
Thanks for bringing that up!

I am saddened--I don't trust MD anymore. I recently received a dead on arrival item, MD said "too bad, no warranty, we will issue a refund when you send item back." This was after waiting for the item for 3 weeks. Not a good bargain in my opinion.
Does this ship to Australia?
vsrinath
Yes. But there are far cheaper options for this watch in aud. Just letting you know.

I didn't pick up this watch from here, but I have the same model and it's awesome! The (nylon ?) band that comes with the watch is rather crappy, so switch it out with a leather band or whatever suits your fancy and it'll be great! Highly recommend.
Thanks again for joining this drop! We have submitted the group's order with the vendor for the Seiko Kinetic Field Watch and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.

My wife put this through the washing machine and there is water inside it and the glass is slightly cracked, but it still works!!! And keeps good time. Imagine that. I will put up a photo later.
Was tempted to buy as an every day watch but it looks a bit too basic and childish
Can anyone tell me if this model has a screwdown crown?
The 5M85 has a GMT feature, I thought. Is it supposed to say 5M82?
sockpuppy
Kind of what I was thinking. 5m82 date 5m83 day/date 5m85 GMT
At least as far as I can tell
Can we get the sapphire glass version for a drop? the hardlex is not good enough
I will give my take on seiko kinetic watches. I have owned several. What they call a capacitor is really a rechargeable battery. My original watch I wore daily for eleven years. I put it down for a few weeks and the battery finally exhausted itself and would not recharge.
The technology is a little dated. If it's a watch you will wear for daily use then it is great. I love the concept behind it generating it's own power supply. If they are worn occasionally, like a few times a month then it is not a purchase that makes sense. When fully charged it has a reserve of about 4 to 6 months. However, if not worn for a while and the power resesrve dives, it is not able to charge itself past the point it is exhausted to. I have a watchmaking background, so swapping of the battery/capacitor is easy for me, but a jewelry store is going to charge you in excess of 89 dollars or more. You should take this all into account when you are deciding to purchase this item.

I just use a bit of a masking tape to hold the watch to the charger ... problem solved ... this is not too much to do every 5-6 month even if you have 3 or 4 watches.
jcoffin1981
I don't wish to knock anybody for wishing to own one, I just wanted to let a new owner know what they are up against. If it's worn for only a few times a month it will be dead in 6 months. Once the battery "capacitor" is drained it cannot be recharged and you have to take it to a watchmaker for 80 dollars or so. Fortunately I can change my own for cost, about 15 dollars. Looks like the enthusiasts have already found ways around this dilemma. There is a reason the technology has almost died out.
hi, great!
For those who are interested, or for those considering this watch for an upcoming drop....here are a few thoughts on mine now that i've been living with the watch for a couple of weeks.
1) It really is a very nice watch. The satin, beadblasted finish is good looking and makes a nice change from the polished finish of my other watches. The green color is dark and handsome. It definitely doesn't look or feel like a budget watch. It feels like a quality piece.
2) at 42mm, it's slightly larger than my ideal size of 40mm, but it doesn't overwhelm on my 6.8" wrist
3) The dial is very clean and legible. I don't know if the hardlex crystal has an anti-glare coating. I suspect it does, at least on the inside. Reflections are present but not overwhelming. I do wish manufacturers would nut up and make a decent sized date window. It might be fine for 20 somethings with 20/20 vision but i'm older now and like many watches, the windows is too damn small. Commit to a readable size, or commit to removing it. I'm looking at you too, Citizen...
4) The kinetic movement has been keeping good time, as good as my other quartz watches. The watch arrived with about 6 months of power reserve on it, probably from all the bouncing around during shipping. I should mention that to check the power reserve, you press a button in the 2 o'clock position on the dial. The manual recommends doing this at the top of the minute, which does make taking a reading easier. I should note that the second hand will remain stopped for a a number of seconds after the reading is taken. This is normal. The first time I tried it, I waited for the second hand to resume and i waited and waited. I was almost ready to think the watch had stopped when the hand resumed again.
5) The rotor makes a LOT of noise as it moves, far more than my mechanical watches. At first I was concerned that perhaps something wasn't working properly, but if you search, you'll find this is a thing with Seiko kinetics. The sound, which is not unpleasant, sounds a bit like a very tiny ratchet...like little gears meshing together and you don't have to hold the watch up to your ear to hear it. Move your wrist quickly in a quiet room and you can hear a small little ziiiip! sound.
6) You would think from the nice thick hands and bold font on the numbers that this watch could have the potential for fantastic lume, but sadly it does not. The numbers themselves do not glow. Only the hands and a very small pip for each hour around the outer ring of the dial. It is neither torch-like nor particularly long lasting. You expect this on a dress watch with thin numerals, but here, it's disappointing.
7) The woven band is good looking and despite appearing stiff and uncomfortable in photos is actually anything but. It is very comfortable to wear, and I especially appreciate the addition of a leather/pleather strip in the center of the band to reinforce the the buckle holes so they don't fray. At first I was disappointed that the holes themselves weren't grometted, but i think if they were, it might detract from the look and possibly the feel of the watch. Time will tell how well it will hold up, but for now...it looks nice and it's comfortable.
So, in summary. The watch looks as good or even better than it does in the pictures. The band is nicer than I expected, soft and comfortable despite appearances. the case itself is very handsome and the dial is supremely legible, with the exception of the date window which is, in my opinion, too small for older eyes. The lume is genuinely disappointing. There isn't enough of it for my taste, and it does fade rapidly...but this is not a $500 Hamilton Khaki either, so adjust your expectations accordingly. Lastly, the rotor does make a lot of noise, which you can hear if you move your wrist quickly in a quiet room, but again...the sound isn't a bad one, merely one you notice more easily than on a traditional mechanical. The watch keeps good time, at least so far.
I am very pleased with this purchase. It's a lot of value for very little money. As with many Seikos, it DEFINITELY punches above its weight. I have to remind myself this is a $130 watch. It surely doesn't feel like it.
One last note, I have not yet tried it on my watch winder. I have heard that many winders won't work with kinetic movements. With 6 months of power reserve, it's not a big problem for me. When i want to charge it, i'll simply wear it for a few days, which isn't a hardship given that I like it so much.
If you're considering this watch on a future drop, i'd say...go for it. It's a very nice piece and I think you'll enjoy it.
All The Best,
David R.

I have charged the lume with a flashlight, and it does glow....but it fades quickly. as for my winder, with a 6 month power reserve i'm not worried. It's not like the 40 hours i get on my mechanicals. : )

Yes, it's quite nice having the power reserve indicator and the peace of mind that comes with that.

Anyone know where to get the green one? Amazon has it for retail, but it has some horrible logos/branding on it ("Sport" and a shield), like it totally screws up the face.
singularidiot
I did some looking around and found a nice website called CreationWatches, they had the green one for about the same price, I ordered it yesterday

Great hookup. Thanks @Cody17
please tell me ,products from massdrop comes with international warranty? or just usa warranty?
I cannot comment personally on the Kinetic, but the Seiko 5 automatic and Prospex line are phenomenal time pieces. I have a few Seiko's and they have been absolutely dead nuts reliable.
The SNZG is the closest to this Kinetic, and it is simple, clean, and robust. It is a very stout time piece, though the crown does NOT screw down. As far as a military/field watch, you will be hard pressed to find a better time piece, regardless of price point. The guy who got me into Seiko purchased his first one in the 70's while on deployment in Asia, and he said that his Seiko 5 had never let him down, no matter where he was, and he still wears it to this day.
Although these watches run a little larger than 40mm, they never feel it to me, and sit really well on the wrist. Literally all I have done with the watches was change the bracelet and straps out as I see fit.
If there is a down side to buying one Seiko, it is that you will likely want to get another. It's little wonder that Seiko's are typically the bug bite that starts the watch collection.
Amazon's price seems lower after shipping costs.
