Product Description
It should come as little surprise that the Spyderco Valloton Sub-Hilt recalls the stiletto-style switchblades of the 1950s. After all, the designer of this glossy folder—Butch Valloton—has long been a fan of both automatic knives and Italian-style folders Read More

Yep, I'm in--NOT THE DROP,  rather the annoyance of more trolling for suckers Massdrop pricing.   Amazon has the Vallotton significantly cheaper and much more reasonably priced.   I own the this Spyderco pictured above, and the smaller cool iteration, the L'l Sub Hilt.  With the exception of a slightly soft detent,  both knives are superb and unique. The new and unusual aesthetics are a great departure from usual knifey ordinaryness.  Most importantly, these knives are truly operationally excellent,  so I choose to forgive the detent issue.   However,  I imagine the weight of these knives are sure to mobilize all the whiners from the planet Weinie that they are unable to abide anything over 2 oz in order to open letters and cut cardboard long hours on the job.  Since I am fortunate that I do not suffer from a neuromuscular disorder and can accommodate 6 oz for more than a few seconds, I actually appreciate the presence in hand.  BD

wdennisDamn, ! Well said. Light knives have their place--many places, in fact; sometimes you don't want an extra gram of unnecessary weight--but most days I prefer a heavier knife, and will even tolerate an overly heavy knife if it has other features to recommend it. My copper-dressed, 6-and-a-quarter-ounce Acrform/Tuffknives Catalyst, for example. Not the knife to carry when wearing a pair of gym shorts, but my trousers are well-made, and like you, I am fortunate not to suffer from any neuromusclar disorders that might inhibit me from using 1/3 lb hand tools. The other knock I've heard on the Spydie Vallottons is that they are ugly. To which I reply: yeah, they sure are. Ugly like a pit viper, or piranha, or, well...ugly like a spi(y)der. "Ugly" is another thing I don't want EVERY knife in my collection to be, but I definitely want SOME of them to be. And that polished black G10 looks amazing, I wish more manufacturers would do that. Definitely contributes to the overall reptilian look of the knife. If you're ready to take your Vallotton ownership to the next level, this is the one I have, except in the Sub variety, as that was all they had when I was flush with the not insignificant $ to buy one: https://www.pvk.vegas/Spyderco-Vallotton-p/1vck-spy-dasa.htm The auto mechanics are a bit touchy and require regular tuning, but when everything is properly balanced the leaf spring makes the blade just fly out. Speaking of needing regular adjustments, I accidentally popped the leaf spring out of mine one day when I had it partially disassembled, and I haven't yet worked up the motivation to put it back in. But the great thing is Mr. V just added the auto function without impeding the manual option, so it's a technically a hidden-scale release, double-action auto. Great for people living in places with regressive auto knife laws. Or anyone who without debilitating arthritis and neuropathy who just wants a cool knife.

HatuletohThe Arcform Catalyst!? Nice!! I’m going to jump on one of those in a couple weeks, but I can’t decide which one. I checked out the Vallotton link, thanks! I saw the auto a while back and got sidetracked with a couple A.G.A. CAMPOLIN autos that I don’t regret, but seeing the Vallottons again has ignited the interest. Yeah, the Spyderco Vallotton ma be construed as ugly, but at some point it became quite beautiful and unique. Thanks for your reply Hatuletoh. Good wishes

I bought mine 4 years ago from the Knifecenter and they had an offer on the knife. I paid $149 for it. Lovely knife and really solid overbuilt.

Thanks to all who have written in. This is a great knife but you are right! You can buy it much cheaper on Amazon ($175)! I can give a rat's ass if it comes with the Spyderco zipper case (the only difference). I have the exact same knife. This not a "deal" at all. I have bought a ton of stuff on this site and I have bought at good prices in the past but not so much lately. Have you noticed that there is no "drop" in Massdrop anymore? I've not seen a "mass price drop" in months. This has become nothing more than an online retail site. The other members are absolutely correct. Happy New Year and keep on chatting and giving advise. Much appreciated. A great way to find out if you're getting ripped off. BTW... Massdrop's return policy is a joke. They, in effect, do not have a return policy!

brad1You are exactly right. But it’s an online retail site that takes a month or more to deliver the goods. Shame

brad1Yeah their return policy is to ask you for photos then make up some excuse as to why they cannot honor the return. I am dealing with this right now and will not be using them anymore. It’s much simpler and fraustration fee to order from Amazon. At least they value their customers enough to never put them through this 💩

How is this a deal or is it like the seller gets the deal he charges more then he can sell it else where then laughs at everyone who could have got it else where in 3 days verses how ever long mass drop takes
