Get it for $25 at REI.com....... This is one part of my water purification/filter kit It definitely works and works quick to eliminate bacteria, viruses and giardia/cryptos but does nothing to filter out any particulates, heavy metals, chemicals or inorganic compounds. So this should be a part of a kit, not the sole means of purification.

I agree with gnarled coulee, a backup method should always be available. I intend for this Steripen to be my primary method of sterilization. Since I live with on 20% of my intestines, I have to be very careful. If I could boil every liter of water i drink, or cook with etc, any little unwanted bug could be a killer. My research showed that the technology used in Steripen, was almost as good as the boiling water method of H2O preparation for consumption, I plan on keeping extra batteries available in the storage bag I have my water kits in. Happy trails to all. TC

Hi. Can anyone confirm that this model works with a standard soda/water bottle sized opening? Can I use this with a Smartwater bottle?

I went with the steripen classic 3 from B&H, which has the lamp guarantee and a prefilter. It's on sale for $35 plus shipping (under 5 dollars for me), and you get a free liter size steripen bottle.

hweisheimerThanks for the heads-up! I did the same. B&H also includes a SteriPen bottle, a $14 value, still for $35 with the classic 3.

SteriPEN has a SteriPEN Aqua on their site with MSRP $49.95, weight with batteries 178g and lamp activations 3,000. Since this is shown as a Massdrop exclusive I wanted to check that this really is a different Aqua than that listed on steripen.com. This one has MSRP $59.97, weight with batteries 130g (assuming 4AA is 48g) and 6,000 lamp activations.
The description of the drop also doesn't say anything about the warranty (their site is 1 year) or if it qualifies for the Lamp Life Pledge (which the one on their site doesn't). I doubt I'll ever hit 6,000 activations so it's not a concern to me but maybe to others.
I have a Sawyer Mini which I love because it's so light but annoying to use, I have a MSR SweetWater which is easy to use but heavy. I've been thinking of getting a SteriPEN but have always been worried about potential electrical/battery problems leaving me without a way to purify water. This might be worth a try though.

Scrope@Scrope - good questions about this particular model of Steripen. Like you said, this one has 6k activations compared to the 3k of the standard Aqua. Neither model qualifies for their 8k activation pledge, though Steripen should warranty these through 3k/6k respectively.
I like the Aqua model for traveling because you can find AA batteries anywhere in the world and it's not always possible to recharge electronics. So, this fits that need nicely. The model in this drop is great because for a few bucks more than the original Aqua, you get twice the lifetime. Seems like a no brainer if you're considering the Aqua. There are other models that are smaller and much more expensive, but I would stick with this if you're only using this for international travel and a couple of camping trips a year.
@gnarledcoulee - two methods of filtration is particularly useful for really sketchy water when traveling and camping with really gnarly water.
ScropeGood point.indeed,i thing someone should go to check at the Association of Water Quality if this brand selled by Massdrop really been registered.
