Think about it, folks. There is no free lunch. The lens manufacture needs to make money, Drop needs to make money, but the lens is being sold about ~$330 below what the lens currently sells for WITH a USA 6-year warranty. Several online shops are selling the "international version" (grey market) lens with no USA warranty for about what this drop is going for. These grey market lenses were intended for the international market, not to be sold here in the USA. It may be the exact same lens, but it was priced lower for the non-North American market so there is very little chance Tamron will honor the warranty. Drop is not an authorized USA Tamron dealer. Drop may offer to help you facilitate a claim, but I doubt they will be able to convince Tamron to do any warranty work on a lens sold outside of their USA authorized dealer network. The ability to register your purchase does not equal Tamron honoring a warranty your international lens wasn't intended to carry. That said, I've owned several grey market lenses. Tamron SP lenses are built fairly well and it's likely you may never need the warranty. So, it's up to you to choose saving the $330ish dollars or pay more for the USA warranty. You will NOT find a USA warrantied lens at this price.

I’m happy you are happy. I wasn’t trying to win any game. Lens manufacturers work hard to control prices, but it looks like Drop really came through with a killer deal. Glad you got in on it and happy shooting.

The warranty won't apply, I purchased a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 G2 from here and registered it but got email from Tamron saying that Massdrop is not an authorized dealer so warranty won't apply. Purchase at your own risk!

I reached out to Tamron to see whether or not this was legit. Their answer seems to be "maybe". "Thank you for contacting Tamron. Drop, unfortunately, is a selling platform like eBay or Amazon. I would check to see who the seller is on there and then reference them to our “find a dealer” tab on our website to see if they are Authorized." Drop doesn't list who their supply partner is on any given drop, so it's impossible to independently verify if a given drop is legit or not. I really wish Drop was more transparent about this stuff.

"It boasts a 35mm equivalent focal length of 36–105mm..." No. This is a 35mm lens. It's equivalent focal length is 24-70mm. Come on Massdrop, this is just plain embarrassing. It's a shame, I just bought this lens a couple of months ago. This is actually a pretty nice discount, for once.

You won't get much argument from me there. It's pretty obvious the kids who are writing the copy for damn near anything here on MD have ZERO personal experience with the products and sometimes, even the "sport/discipline/concept" itself. My guess is, they spin a bottle (or role and eighteen sided die) and the one who loses, has to right the ad ;- )

SitwonAgree with Sitwon..........the sentence doesn't make any sense as written but I knew what they meant. A lot of people do not know though. Canon has a 1.6 crop factor (Focal Length Multiplier) on most of their camera's and Nikon has a 1.5 crop factor. But the sentence just says, ""It boasts a 35mm equivalent focal length of 36–105mm..." And that sentence is only correct when it finishes with....used on a Nikon APS-C sensor camera. They would also have to say that, "It boasts a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38.4mm - 112mm on a Canon APS-C sensor camera"

It's standard practice for lens manufacturers to market their lenses at full retail price in the U.S., and then offer the exact same lens at a discount on the less affluent international market. Known as "gray market," those lenses are sometimes purchased and imported for resale on the U.S. market by unauthorized dealers. You can get a great deal on a gray market lens, but most manufacturers will not perform ANY warranty or even paid repair work on gray market lenses to discourage the practice. Drop details say "Tamron's 6-year warranty" and "U.S. Spec." A category leader has said in the comments that it's "the full U.S. warranty" and that they will "facilitate a warranty claim" if necessary. Is a category leader a member or a Drop employee? I personally don't think info from the comments section is the same as Drop guaranteeing we are buying from a U.S. authorized dealer so that Tamron will have to honor the warranty. Do we get a receipt from the authorized dealer or just from Drop? Drop is not an authorized dealer as far as I can tell. And if the serial number of the lens you get indicates it was intended for the international market then you are likely out of luck regardless.

I've said several times there is no difference in the actual build quality or specifications of the lens. It's the same lens. In the past I've seen two versions of a some lens being manufactured in two different countries, with a lesser quality version intended for the international market, but I have never seen Tamron do this with their SP lenses. Their lenses are pretty well built, especially the SP line, and I am fairly confidant they are all coming out of the same factories at the same specs. To track lenses, manufacturers keep track of the serial number and which market and which pricing structure the lens was intended for. Authorized USA dealers agree to sell the lens for the authorized price and this is how the manufacturer controls the price of their product. But sometimes a dealer will buy a bunch of lenses at a substantial savings on the international market, ship them to the USA and sell them here at a discount. And occasionally those who do might not be so upfront that the lens warranty won't be honored. Usually you will see them marketed as "international version." Buyers simply need to understand this and decide if the savings is worth sacrificing the warranty. Manufacturers hate the grey market practice and won't repair those lenses or do any kind of warranty work on them. There are no manufactured sanctioned, grey market, back channel, reduced price sales in the USA for which USA warranties will be honored. These kinds of sales operate outside of the manufacturers authorized dealer network, so it's in their best interests to refuse service on them.

rshveydaWhile what you saying is mostly true in regards to International spec lenses let me reiterate that in this particular run we are not offering an International spec lens. This lens is being purchased from an authorized dealer who received them from Tamron USA. Typically if it were an International Spec lens, the warranty is only good in the country it was originally purchased in/intended for and would involve shipping it back,Internationally, to its origin and then back again to you. None of the serial numbers from this particular run will indicate that this lens was intended for any market outside of the USA because it is a USA lens. It is true that our process is not a standard one but neither is our price.

While the price is good, they're not clear on how warranty claims will be handled. Both B&H and Adorama's customer feedback on the lens would indicate QC issues. When they're good, they're great but they also ship problematic copies.

Great price if you're in USA. But in Canada, it translates to about $1200 CAD, and then I'm sure I'd get dinged with taxes if it shipped over the border. I can find an Excellent+ model used online for about same price, and not pay taxes. Sigh.

I would have thought so myself and checked the Canada Customs website to find out the rate but found nothing that applies to consumer photo equipment imported from the States. No duties, no taxes. If you happen to know the rate, please share.

Haha people just too fancy with the idea. Well the lens itself will never change, it is 24-70 whatever FF or APS-C you use. The lens is the lens. But when use it on your smaller sensor , the “effective focus length” or whatever you call it , give you an image look like 36-105. But still the image is actually 24-70, the camera just give you the central part of the image.

Your Tamron lens gets registered by the vendor for you once the drop is complete. Any issues would be handled through Tamron not Drop.com.
