Sorry total rookie question here, is this considered a headphone DAC/amp specifically or is it a DAC/Amp that happens to have a headphone out? I'm under the impression that there's a difference, and I'm looking for a headphone DAC/Amp that can push the T50RP's. If I'm totally off base here, please by all means correct my understanding :D
Supersport
The UD-301 seems to be a combination of 3 things: a DAC, a headphone amp and a pre-amp. There are no analog inputs, so both the headphone amp and pre-amp will only take input from the built-in DAC. They can't be used independently with an external source.
It won't drive passive speakers directly, but the pre-amp output can drive either self-powered speakers or a power amp + passive speaker setup.
I'd say it's first and foremost a DAC, but how much effort/expense was directed towards either the headphone amp or pre-amp sections I don't know.
I'm not really familiar with the T50RPs, but I have a vague recollection that they're low impedance but need a lot of current. If that's correct then the UD-301's max. output power of 200 mW into 32 Ohm may not push the T50RPs quite as far as you'd like.

Perfect. Thanks for the response.
Wished I saw this earlier, these things are in the $650-700CDN here in Canada (we get screwed on pricing but did manage to find one with a pricing error at $550CDN). Even after the exchange difference, this price is pretty decent, in fact, great bang for the buck.
Setup I have here is a Raspberry Pi running Volumio, USB to the UD-301, variable output to the main inputs on a used Yamaha DSP-A1 (bypassing everything on the amp) with a pair of Focal 719s. Sound's much better than using the built in DAC on the A1 which is comparable to a 90's CD player.

The support for the teac (and other USB DACs) works out of the box with Volumio. Volumio images can be found here: https://volumio.org/

many thanks
you know, massdrop, the title should really say headphone amp
I've had mine for over a year and LOVE it.

Any chance the 501 ever ends up on here?
Thanks for the price reduction... this just may get me to commit :) For me, the UD-301 really hits a sweet spot of performance, features and price that may be too enticing to pass up. Been looking at this and the pricier TEAC DACs for some time now.
FYI regarding comparisons with the discontinued UD-501 and it's replacement the UD-503. There are some key differences between how these various models handle the user-selectable upconvert function, which **may** impact sound and purchase decisions. Obviously there are other factors/features as well like the analog stage designs, ability to alter digital filter, power supply, DAC chip, etc.
UD-301: can upconvert PCM by whole number multiples of the original samplerate; selectable 2x or 4x up to 192/176.4khz (eg, 44.1>88.2>176.4 or 48>96>192); no digital filter options
UD-501: can upconvert PCM below 192khz to 192khz even if not an whole number multiple (asynchronous upsampling for CD samplerate; eg, 44.1 x 4.353... = 192khz); also provides digital filter options
UD-502: can upconvert PCM in even multiples of the original samplerate; selectable 2x, 4x or 8x up to 384/352.8khz; can also upconvert PCM to DSD, also provides digital filter options
Interesting that both the entry-level 301 and new 503 employ whole number unconversion (oversampling) compared to the discontinued 501 with asynchronous upconversion.
only 120v
Finally, the price makes sense. I wish I didn't own one already...or...should I buy a backup? LOL. Good deal now on an awesome product. Add a pair of JBL LSR305s, and you have an outstanding desktop, or small room solution.
If they (Teac) realized how popular this item would be in other countries then they would sell this faster, than virgin-ass in prison.
Very few Americans are interested in this model, so I don't know why they (MassDrop) still keep concentrating only on the US market when you've got close to 8 Billion of us elsewhere, willing to jump on this if it had 240v max ability.
Good news, all! After speaking to our vendor, we were able to offer an adjustment to the price.
Matt.T
Can you also ask your vendor to supply an INTERNATIONAL Model that runs on 240 Voltage ?
If you could, then I shall BUY one immediately because there are no DACs like this one with the variety of rear connections available here in Convict Town, unless you want to pay over $800+AUD.
Elrick
I'll second that Elrick - here in NZ there's nothing comparable, and retailers are clueless. If I saw a 240V 301, or better, a 501, I'd be on that like ugly on a gorilla!
Today's price at Amazon: $298.67 with Prime (+ tax where charged), sold by Amazon themselves - so this one is a bust for MassDrop.... won't stop me from watching out for deals on MD though! Nice to see the MSRP corrected.
Just my 2 penneth: Bearing in mind this is 2 years+ old and the market for DACs is fierce, am thinking this needs to be at the $200 mark to bring in some real business. Love the compact form factor but my suspicion is that the balanced outputs won't be used by most, with DSD being the hot item everyone wants to tinker with. Too bad the 101(IIRC) doesn't do DSD.

well the matrix could do it years ago but this is better/ newer tech.

Another fine product ONLY for the US Market.
Not a Good price. Amazon better deal and Free shipping for Prime.
Best buy has this for 399 and Amazon has it for 319. This isn't a good deal at all.

no worries. I would agree that Massdrop should focus on some harder to find items that are not offered on other retail sites. I would love to see some Emotiva components, or even some Equator speakers, offered here as those are currently only sold directly from the manufacturer.
Agreed, they are even less than that on AMZ. I'd say, find a closeout deal on the UD-501 instead, for around $425 and I'd be in...
Anyone using this amp with the X00?
Could someone tell me what the final price on this ended up being? Thanks.

You clearly don't seem to understand the remark. Good for you though. You've already said you're in California. No need to say it twice.

I would definitely be in for this if I didn't already have a Mojo. With the advent of the Grace m9xx, Centrance, and even Sound Blaster's A7, there are newer DAC chips to be had which on technical details alone, carry more for the money. I would be buying this for the balanced feature which would be perfect for the HPs I would use it with. Teac offers the UD-503 with dual AK4490 DAC chips and it has also won Japan's VGP 2016 award back in October 2015. Though the UD-301 is well priced for its feature (balanced DAC), I will wait for a more prominent DAC to hit Massdrop.
Hi all, this product is only available in the 120V option with a US plug.

Hi, I just received it, and was also expecting the voltage question. Now that I received it, it is 120V, while I need 220-240V. I want to return it.
