Yes air cooling is definitely easier and cheaper. As far as sound goes, in my experience the big difference is with the GPU. When you throw a block on it and stress it, it's a completely different world. Especially if you have a blower card. Fortunately blowers seem to be going the way of the Dodo. I didn't notice the change from an air cooled CPU as much. Admittedly that might be just because I find the GPU that annoying. I don't have any pictures. It was just a basic CPU, GPU, and pump/res with a 360 rad and Tygon tubing. When I upgraded last year I transplanted it into my dad's PC. It made him happy but it has taken me a lot longer to acquire the bits n pieces to replace it than I expected.

An open loop system is something that's going to cost more in time and effort, especially once you get it in and then realize you need to get to something it may be blocking. I don't disagree with you on the possible effectiveness, but that also depends on how it's designed. Unless you really need it, I would still suggest an air cooler, but those are 2 sides of a camp that people just tend to sit on. Do you find yours to be quieter than a strictly air cooled solution? It would be neat to see a picture.

I would just point out that an open loop system is much better than the H100, you can't really compare the two. A Closed Loop Cooler (CLC, like the H100) has it's place especially in small form factor builds. Since the thermal performance between the is similar, the air cooler vs CLC decision should be based on space and cost.
