I received a black Realforce 87U the last time this drop ran. This is not my first Realforce. I already own a white 87U, and a 10th Anniversary 87U. I'm just a fan of this design and, seeing that the new R2 version eschews with the classic, old-school Realforce design, I decided to pick another one. My opinion remains the same: this is one of the best pre-built keyboards money can get you. The tactility of the 55g domes is sublime, the sound is music to the ears (oh, that glorious thock!), and the build quality is top-notch. If you're not a touch-typist you'll have a hard time using the black version, so keep that in mind. All in all, you cannot go wrong with this board. P.S.: I thought about taking off a star due to the PBT spacebars — yeah, they suck ass — but that would be unfair to the greatness of the classic Realforce 87U.

Simply the best keyboard I have ever had.

This is a fantastic keyboard. I'm really enjoying these switches at 55g across the board. Feels so, so solid. I can imagine the 55g weight being a bit heavy for folks doing long-form kinds of writing (at least until you built up to it), but as a web developer I want a very tactile feel to the key actuation (for touch typing), and this all black model is definitely the keyboard for that, because in a dimly lit environment you can't see the key markings at all (only applies to the all black model). I thought I would swap out the space bar, but I'm really just enjoying the "murdered out" look, as shipped.

solid keeb, great platform for modding but i like mine stock so far. glad i was able to grab this before the OG realforce shortage starts. 55g domes for me nice and tactile without being stiff. i'll give BKEs a try next. one of the pbt spacebars came a little warped but it's nothing that a hair dryer won't fix EDIT: actually took a good look at the PBT spacebars, realized that the black and blue spacebars came with defects. blue spacebar has streaks that show pretty clearly under a light, black spacebar messes with the operation of the stabilizers, keycap stem ended up bending because it was so off-kilter. white spacebar also came pretty warped. switched back to abs spacebar, the PBT ones are garbage. great keyboard, but don't plan on using the spacebars. MD got lazy with the injection for this batch.

they are not lazy it's just apparantely very difficult to not get the pbt shrink/deform if doing bigger caps of pbt.

I finally caved and bought one of these after all the hype for 55g Topre, but I wasn't sure how sold I was going to be given I already had a 45g HHKB. After unboxing and playing around with the keys, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be--they didn't feel as springy as the 45g I was used to. However...once I started properly typing...holy shit. The domes caving in is wonderful. The sound is amazing, even the bigger keys. Especially the bigger keys. If you're on the fence about Topre, or only know the 45g and want to try the 55g, definitely give this a try. It's still a much different feeling experience than the 45g while still retaining that Topre smoothness. Included PBT spacebars were also very nice, mine have no warping.

Gosh they are goooood. When you only hit once they feel like rubber doom, then you type consistently and the magic happens...so satisfying. I own a cherry blue and they feel great also but this is like another level. Like putting an uni into your month and just buttery feeling. I'm confortable using it to code 10 hrs a day but would never do that with the cherry blue. It would distroy my fingers with cherry blue. Love it so far. Just one warning: when you try to take out the spacebar to swap, use your hand to pull it and gently. There's a spring in the spacebar so be careful don't lose it. Mine jumped into the air when I pull it, scary moment.

Ohh shit, i want a 2nd one now !

Easily my favorite key board for extended typing. They only downside is no key remapping unmodified. Get a Hasu USB to USB controller on geekhack for remapping keys and it's suddenly got everything I want in a keyboard. Love this thing.

Love this keyboard and still get comments how nice it is to type on. I like how solid it is and how little play the keys have. Tenkeyless form factor is a revelation, so much easier on the mouse hand. My first mechanical keyboard, definitely a winner!

Great board so far. I would rate it as my third favorite switch behind beamspring and SKCL/SKCM Alps. I swapped in ultra light BKE domes and changed the housings and caps to Hipro. I personally found the 55g too heavy so go with the variable if you're a light typist.

Very well built board, with great attention to detail (alternative caps for swapping capslock to control and it also switches the caps lock light!)
My only star subtractions: Numpad functionality does not work in Mac. Also, there's no way to properly setup the correct modifier row for a Mac without a 3rd party app ("correct" is ctrl, alt, cmd, space, cmd, alt, ctrl ).
Not worth any star deductions: The spacebar always feels too stiff to me. The keys have a very unique profile I have had a hard time getting used to (although if you like them, even more part of the Topre Charm)
Of course for some people the price of this seems quite high, but for all of the drops I've been on on Massdrop, this one is probably one of the best bang for the buck drops. The resale on those spacebars is quite good.
(I'm not going to touch "is Topre best feeling keyboard" topic. That's entirely up to your preference)

Eh, got the 55g expecting a more tactile feedback... Got a really mushy and thick feeling in them. I swapped with BKEs anyways for that surperior tactility, but I really wouldn't recommend the 55g, but to be fair I wouldn't even recommend the 45g at the price. I just found the holy grail called bkes and never looked back.
Don't know why realforce thought they were special and but 1u bottom rows... Seriously is a pain when you are using cherry mx mounts for them.
The ability to swap ctrl and caps is a great addition. They even included specialized keycaps for them. Well built and I love that classic bezel on the top with that metal logo (people who say that it takes up unnecessary space can suck my dick. I love that bezel). I was going to hold off on it, but I tried the R2(which is going to replace all of these models) at a meetup... was really not impressed. They cut alot of the plastic out and now it feels incredibly cheap. It also looked generic compared to the v1 design. Also plate mounted topres are the best.
I would rank these higher in build quality over an hhkb, but I feel like the leopold still wins just because it feels way thicker and way more solidly built.

I agree with you on the "big bezel" part. I frigging love those bezels. Look so classy!

The feeling of the domes collapsing has no equal in the Cherry MX compatible world, it's simply unique. The 55g model feels amazing, way better than the Realforce RGB, the extra resistance of the 55g domes vs the 45g ones makes a difference here as does the sound. The sound is actually quite similar but the one on the RGB is higher pitched, higher frequency while the one on the 87UB is lower pitched, with a little bit more bass.
The PBT keycaps feel amazing despite being quite thin. When I first pulled out a keycap I was actually surprised of how thin they are. Nevertheless, the texture is just right and the profile is decent. The black dye subbed legends on dark gray keycaps combination is pretty cool, enhancing the black case looks. The PBT spacebars bundled with the keyboard here on Massdrop are hit and miss, some of them look really cheap but in the end they are a nice extra. I also installed red blanks from KBDFans on the Esc and Enter keys for enhanced aesthetics.

The keyboard itself looks and feels a little dated but let's say it has a classic look to it. It's also very well built.
A major drawback is the lack of compatibility with the Cherry MX keycaps but there are rumors that the new models will actually have it.
Yeah, it's a cliche but it is one of the best and most expensive rubber dome keyboards ever! In the end I like it even more than the Realforce RGB.

This is my favourite keyboard (over my Das Professional 4 fro Mac with MX Cherry Browns). The PBT spacebars were poor, but I like the built in one (thankfully).

Great price, great product. It's my first Topre board and can't I express how much I like this. I'd compare it to my 87-key brown-switch Filco board since that was my favorite, until the arrival of this one.
The electro-capacitive switches are quiet, unlike all other mechanical switches that either goes silent or noisy, this board strikes a good balance between tactility and comfort, that it will absolutely work with office environment. It actually sounds like membrane keyboard in my opinion, but it comes with much better overall construction as expected, and the clickiness is totally comparable to any other mechanical keyboards given the quality, except that if you're into tactile bump like any other keyboard with blue or brown switch.
Stock PBT keycaps are excellent, and the PBT spacebars provided are solid except that the black spacebar is a bit scratched already on delivery.

The white one works well though, thus the black-white setup at the end.

Honestly this should be my endgame as it totally suits all my needs. I don't need gamerish ones and neither do I care about 'performance' of a keyboard , I don't really think that matters much but the construction and premiumness. This Topre board will stay long on my desk.

Great board at a decent price. Excellent key caps & switches. Bonus PBT Spacebars are a must. Only con I can think of is that the popup feet do not have rubber bottoms to prevent slipping on a smooth surface. Easy to solve by putting a large mouse mat or a towel underneath.

Basically a rubber dome keyboard
In reality, feels good to type on and is sturdy, good weight, looks good, has the perfect amount of keys, I would recommend it to anyone that feels the price is worth it to them

My first Topre keyboard - honestly, I prefer my non-topre keyboards - but the clickity-clack of more traditional mechanical keys has kept me from using those keyboards in the office. I've taken my Realforce into the office several times - and while it isn't silent, it is acceptably quiet. I do wish it supported the Mac layout - it works with my Macbook Pro but I find myself stopping to think about cmd and the other Mac specific keys since they aren't labeled and aren't the same size.

This keyboard has quickly become one of my very few favourite keyboards. I use it for gaming, typing, programming and everything between. The inclusion of PBT space bars is a nice touch. It definitely feels more solid than an HHKB, probably due to the heavy plate, although the typing feel is similar. The typing sound is great, and it's not too loud to use at night when others are sleeping. 10/0 would buy again (a second one to use at work would be nice).

I love it, the colored pbt space bars are ehhh...

10/10 for pure typing, 5/10 for gaming, 8/10 for everyday use.

Trying this keyboard made me hate my cherry mx browns. It has ruined my ability to enjoy other typing experiences. Please send help.
