For avid backpackers and thru-hikers seeking a lightweight, waterproof shelter, the Zpacks Duplex is hard to beat. It's made from Dyneema Composite Fabric: a water-resistant material that's built to stand up to storms and strong winds Read More
Honestly Massdrop is stretching this a bit. This isn’t a substantive deal. It’s a good product, just buy it directly from Zpacks vs buying from the middleman.
runsupmountainsParticularly since Z-packs was running a $25 off sale and ships for free on orders above $100.00 .
And this Drop clearly stated:
All orders will be shipped by the vendor. Estimated ship date is Jan 29, 2019 PT.
Bottom line, Dyneema is really expensive. I wanted a footprint for my Duplex but didn't want to spend another $100. I know, they say it's unnecessary but when you camp in Hawaii, it rains a lot and the ground has all kinds of pokey things. I wanted a footprint to keep my tent clean (mudless) and safe. I priced Dyneema, and the fabric alone was $80, plus shipping in every website I found. Then I'd have to add loops and have someone stitch the loops and edges. I gave up and ordered a polycryo sheet for $5. Then a few days ago I was looking at Zpacks website and saw a footprint in the bargain bin (with imperfections in the stitching) for $79. Snatched it! If I was doing a thru-hike, yeah, I'd carry the 0.7 mil polycryo. But here in Hawaii we hike 6 to 12 miles and spend a few days camping before hiking back. So in my view, well worth the 3 oz and $79 for a peace of mind in keeping my tent brand new. Moral of the story, and sorry for straying away from the subject, Dyneema is expensive. Those cottage companies are not becoming millionaires. A while ago one of the bigger companies launched a lame cuben fiber tent (the UFO) with a $2,000 price tag. It's no longer available. But it just goes to show that if or when bigger companies get into Dyneema, the price tag will be a lot more than Zpacks' prices.
A little bulky compared to the cuben footprint. Not a dealbreaker though. I'd go with polycryo over Tyvek mostly for weight savings. Really the only reason I got the cuben footprint was because I priced the materials, and it was almost the same as the finished product from Zpacks. So when they offered it at $79 in the bargain bin (I can't find any imperfections, though), I got hooked. I actually had already ordered a sheet of polycryo for $5. So I'm still deciding whether to sell the cuben footprint or keep it. If I regret it, I can sell it easily on Ebay. Main reason I want a footprint (of any material) is that here in Hawaii it rains a lot and it can get quite muddy. It's much easier to clean the footprint in the stream than then the bottom of the tent. I'm also a little protective of a $600 tent. I'll probably get over it, but since there's no thru hikes in Hawaii, it's not a big deal the extra 3 ounces.
LeoKauaiBTW, we are the same, Leleo and LeoKauai. Two different accounts for two emails. I wish I could combine them. I use one in my phone and the other in my laptop
There's a lot of numbers being thrown out for this so I thought I'd look up the option I wanted and compare this and the Zpacks site. My option with tax, shipping and handling would be $603.99 from Massdrop and $614.00 from Zpacks directly. $11.99 is a break, but I wouldn't personally consider <2% a "deal".
Curious as to why shipping is free from Zpacks within the United States but there is a charge from Massdrop. As I assume the product will be shipped directly from Zpacks after manufacture in FL.
This is seriously disappointing. Only 7% off? This is not what Massdrop is about, this is a MinusculeDrop at best. The duplex is a good product but it's sad to see such poor discounts on Massdrop.
I decided to get Dan Durston's XMid tent instead, which is also currently on Massdrop. Similar or superior quality to the duplex - only slightly heavier at 791.7 gr -, but is only 199$ total (including stakes!!!) for something that is ultralight, durable and well designed. Sorry Duplex, I'll pass.
Edit: indeed the XMid is a 1P, but the 2P will be available next year. I should have specified it.
