PhodgeGreat point Phodge! Of the Altra running shoe line, the Escalante is arguably their most comfortable multi-purpose option including running (of course), but also walking, in the gym, and just living with better posture : )
I do not enjoy these shoes for running anything other than the track (boring) due to the amount of stretch in the fabric on any road that has anything other than flat. I feel like my foot doesn’t stay on the sole if there is any type of angled surface. That being said, these shoes are great just for regular wear. So cushy and soft!
amstlubcI agree that the upper on the Escalante is a bit stretchy. We actually made a racing version of the Escalante with a tighter woven knit, firmer, more snappy midsole composition and more breathable as well. They are only in special edition versions like Boston (out now) and Chicago which will launch in September. (Keep you eyes peeled, we might do a future drop on Massdrop with the Boston Escalante)!
I ordered these shoes on a whim so I had little expectations about what I'd receive.
The first time I laced up the Escalante and walked around, I was STUNNED at how much cushioning I felt. At 275 lbs I can often crush shoes. The angled toe on the shoes allow my feet to breathe. The extra bit of width engineered to allow the wearer to sport Merino wool socks is noticeable. All I can say is some SERIOUS engineering went into these trainers. They look good, fit fantastic and breathe better than they appear. What a fantastic value proposition. Thanks Massdrop for delivering a fantastic deal. Again and again.

These shoes have some of the best reviews on running shoe websites and they definitely deliver. Very comfortable, with the perfect amount of cushion. I also really enjoyed the foot box technology on the bottom. Only complaint is the top of the shoe; it's very thin and prone to water getting in.
Very comfortable. I use it as a walking shoe and they make me think I need to start running again. It took a little while to get used to the Zero-Drop but not long.
