Question about those of us who use custom orthotics for plantar. Will these shoes be okay with them?

JaycinwongGreat question Jaycinwong! The short answer is yes. All Altra models are terrific for custom orthotics as they are on a ZeroDrop platform, meaning the ball of the foot and the heel are level to one another. The reason this is an ideal footwear environment for your unique orthotics, is that it maintains the heel to toe offset levels that your doc prescribed with your insoles. Most shoes other than Altra have a heel that is higher than the ball of the foot which would throw off whatever your practitioner developed for your feet. I am not sure how your specific orthotic would fit inside the Escalante, but as long as it isn't super high, I suspect it would fit just fine. Hope that helps!

JaycinwongYou can put them in without issue. I would ease into these shoes if you have PF issues. Don't go run 10 miles right off the bat.

Is there a real difference between men and women models except look? I kind of like the women grey model :)

reXetHi reXet! There actually is. Altra is one of the few brands that actually make gender specific shoes. They call the women's models Fit4Her and design them to accommodate the differences versus men's feet. In general, a woman's foot has a narrower heel and midfoot, higher instep, longer arch, and different metatarsal (toe) spacing than men. Also, just in case you don't already know, a good general rule of thumb across all brands is that a women's shoe is about 1.5 sizes smaller than a men's. So a men's 8 is roughly equivalent to a women's 9.5 in length. Hope that helps!
There is a difference in Men's and Women's fit (Altra boasts Fit4Her lasts, one of the few brands on the market making shoes different for women). Women tend to have less fat pads on their heels so the midsole will be slightly softer although not super noticeable. Heel fit will be slightly more narrow in the women's model. Arch length for women is also different, so a lot of small changes that make the men's and women's fit different but nothing so extreme that you wouldn't still have an enjoyable experience in the men's models.

These are great shoes! Ran my first marathon in them, and they’re very durable. If all you’ve run in is Eva foam shoes, these are worth a try.
If the rocks you're running on are in the form of small gravel rocks you'll be just fine. If you're hiking or going over bigger rocks I'd suggest a trail shoe like the Superior or Lone Peak.

YankeeRider is 110% correct. The shoes feel fantastic! They allow me to feel what's underneath my foot due to the sole design and where the flex points are and the cushioning is unbelievable. Much better than I expected and I weigh 275 lbs. I can "bottom out" shoes of this stack height if they're cushioning isn't dense enough but I have no issue whatsoever with these. Fantastic value.

Best running shoes (for me) EVER. I ran for years in New Balance and my shins and knees hated me. I discovered Hoka One One and thought I was in heaven, but the forefoots were too narrow... had to go several sizes up for a decent fit with resulting empty space at the toes. Discovered Altra and got Escalante 1.0's... clouds parted, angels sang, several hundred miles of pain free running and improved mile splits followed. In for several pairs. =P

Hi Everyone, thank you for the overwhelming interest in this drop. The Escalante is one of Altra's top rated shoes, and we're grateful we were able to share this great deal with you. As far as inventory goes, what's left is left and we will not be restocking anymore sizes. If you weren't able to join in this time, check out Altra's website for the updated version, the Escalante 1.5!

PaigeDDo the 1.0s run big or small compared to a normal tennis shoe? People keep telling me different things. I'm about to cancel my order if I can't figure out the propper size to buy

It’s actually pretty widely known that they run small, hence the need to size up, but I guess YMMV!
