The Outdoorsman has been a staple in the Cold Steel lineup for years. With a wide belly and an upswept point for skinning, plus a secondary edge on the spine for breaking bones and hacking through brush, the Outdoorsman lives up to its name Read More
Like many, I thought the "old" Cold Steel knives were unsurpassed by the modern issue knives. Well, this one is pretty darn good. It's well made, well finished and the materials appear to be first rate. Arrived sharp and nicely packaged with a sturdy kydex sheath. The handle is rubber and all the details like the guard and pommel are well executed and nicely finished. The heft is good and the balance is typical of the Cold Steel tanto line, or pretty good. I call this one tanto-ish since it has elements of a tanto with a splash of drop point and clip point thrown in. I believe it to be a pretty broad-purpose blade. Could easily be a survival knife in my opinion. I'm very pleased with it and my knife-loving friends have commented on how nice it is.
zipsurf"San Mai III" is a trademarked name of the Cold Steel blade. But to your point, this IS true san mai, with a core of hardened VG-10 steel layered between 420 mild stainless steel.
Bought this as general hunting/camping knife. I've looked at these for years. Very happy with the price. Haven't had a chance to use it except for some cooking in the kitchen, but it seems to be a good balance of size, shape and quality for my planned uses. We'll see.
This price range on Drop is really good. The sheath is not the blade, but people need to know the detent is light due to the metal guard - not plastic like the Kobun, or Leather Neck.
Everything about this knife is just about perfect. Beautiful lines without being ornate or pretentious. Wicked sharp blade with a sweet balance and comfortable, secure grip. Nice, functional sheath. Clearly an elegant workhorse of a knife.
This is a really nice knife. Clean, businesslike, but elegant in its design. I love the rubberized grip. I’m sure I’ll get many years of use out of it. Totally worth the price!
Pretty sharp out of the box. Cutting paper np, stroking through paper towel tubes not so much. Overall look is awesome. Feel ya good and balanced in hand.
Sheath is no good. It won’t hold the knife, so if you want to carry it any other way but vertically (and hanging low), you’re out of luck. I did put a small piece of gorilla tape on the inside where the bolster is supposed to grab... helped a little.
abufTry putting a ranger band round the top.
Say a half inch or so off an old inner tube .
Slip on even to top of sheath worked a treat for me.dosent spoil looks and keeps knife locked in but still removable in usual way just tighter.
