They come in Elite Velour, Elite Hybrid, Protein Leather, Elite Sheepskin, and Fenestrated Sheepskin, each with their own set of sonic and comfort properties Read More
I went with the hybrids and love them on my 6xx, super comfortable and dont drastically change the sound signature, mids and highs are slightly clearer and the lows warmed up a bit. If you want more of a narrow sound stage with more bass I'd go for a full leather set. Personally with sennheiser I like the hybrids, closer to the original pad sound but way more comfortable.
r3wtThanks guys, I appreciate the info. I'm looking for a wider soundstage so I'll probably go with the hybrids or velour, plus they seem more comfortable for longer periods of wear. Are there any other premium pads besides Dekoni that are comparable by chance?
I've come to the conclusion that "pad rolling", while fun, is not a good idea. I think the only reason most people buy aftermarket pads is because they look nice. I did just that - Brainwavz sheepskin. They look so cool, and the sheepskin feels good against the skin. But if you stop and think about it, headphone designers don't just throw any old pad that happens to be lying around onto their headphone designs. The selection of the pad and its design is very much part of the overall headphone device. The pads are carefully designed and manufactured to match up with the rest of what goes into the design - the cups, transducers, venting, etc etc. Taking the "stock" pads off is throwing away an important part of the engineering that went into the headphone. My experience has shown it changes the sound and character of the headphone. What is created in essence is a kind of Frankenstein Headphone - disparate parts all hacked together. Does it actually sound better? Most people will say "of course it sounds better - look at how much they cost me!" Best advice.. don't do it - it's a waste of time and money.
I appreciate the civilized discussion from both sides. And it's nice to know Dekoni put extensive research and development into their pads.
Though speaking from personal experience, maybe TH-X00 and E-Mu Teak are a bit picky (and less tolerant) on pad designs. I've tried the pleather, leather, and hybrid pads and find that while all of them sound "different", in the end I still prefer the sound of the stock pad.
But I gotta give it to Dekoni for their awesome customer service and quality product (build quality and packaging is top notch). Also feels really comfortable. I guess at this point it just depending on how picky is the user on sound, and as BlueSkies mentioned some might not notice the difference.
BlueSkiesSo true.....I had swap out a Brainwavz sheepskin (bigger radius, thickness) from a factory PU leather of a Sony. It totally destroy the Sony signature sound. The shitty PU leather is there for it's sound purpose not for the comfort or long lasting. I rather stick to factory cup and change with original parts when it wear out every year.
Very new to all of this headphone usage and strategy. I am strongly considering purchasing the premium pads for headphones I don't even own yet - HD 6XX. I would prefer to work with enhancing the one or two sets of headphones that I intend to regularly use and not do experimenting or having a "collection" of headphone sets to use for specific situations. I don't intend to get that intense for just enjoying the music.
However, my main question is to ask about installing/changing over the ear pads. Is this done just by hand with no tools or expertise or glue/fasteners needed? Is this the simple process that it seems from these comments?
DavidLonghornAgree with the other replies... I never recommend a pad change until you've had a good amount time with the new headphone. Sennheiser OEM replacements are also fairly reasonable (around $40 a pair) so the cost savings relative to negative impact (IMO) of the frequency response with AE pads leaves me wondering why so many change the HD600/650/6xx pads. Never found a pad that I felt improved the stock sound, a couple that changed it only slightly with a massive boost to comfort so the trade off was worth it (HE500 & THX00). The Senn pads will be quite stiff when you first get them but that lessens greatly in the first 10-20 hours of listening.
Anyone tried the perforated elite hybrid vs the non perforated sheepskin on the HD650/HD6XX? Do the perforations reduce bass performance? I’m looking to reduce highs and add bass. Thanks!
malapropYeah, I cant do velour for me... I just find it itchy, but I'm sensitive to that. I got to go leather. G'luck! I'm starting youtube review channel called InToIt Reviews. If you like my comments, you can always follow me there. Will be uploading videos in a few months though. I want to get it right rather than rush in.
Ordered HD-800 elite hybrid pads and received incorrect pads--those for AKG headphones. Contacted customer service, only to be told that they are unable to ship the pads I ordered. This was less than one day after the incorrect order was received. No accommodation of any kind was offered.
Very disappointed in the lack of back-up stock and the way this order was handled. I am a many time repeat customer, but will think twice before placing another Massdrop order.
DekoniAudioOnly had them for about a week but so far velvety smooth. Got Purpleheart cups direct from Creative and popped them on day one. Preferred them over the Teak. Bass is as you'd expect, mid bass extension is tight and controlled. Mids seemed forward but not overpowering. Highs are amazing, surprisingly airy for a closed back, and not harsh at the top end.
Sound stage surprised me, separation and imaging spot on. In love with them and I think I will be hard pressed to find an upgrade without dropping serious $$$. Convert to wood cups, will be curious now as to what other flavours sound like.
Would love to get my hands on a 900 / 909 to see what they sound like :D
The HD600 sheepskins are on Amazon for $59, same as here and available with prime so you get them a month sooner. I thought this site was supposed to be cheaper due to amount of people that go in on a deal?
ArtemisIf you're going for comfort, then the Hybrid's or Velour would be a good first unless you know you just love leather. I would almost say go for the Velour as they're the cheapest and closest material wise to the stock pads. It would at least give you an idea if you like the pads material and foam before buying multiple sets.
