May i know does any model in this drop suits the Denon D7000?? Thanks
Sweet thanks for your feedback I'm definitely gonna give everything you said a try after my wallet gets a little break from massdrop. I also ordered the yulong dac can't wait to hear how it sounds with it. What dac/amp are you using ? Also do you recommend getting the hd650s also? Sorry about all the questions.
Nguyen
Hey no worries, and sorry for your wallet :P

My current setup is: Yulong D100 MkII --> Project Ember / Burson HA-160 (I also have the Lyr and Bifrost combo which I am selling off).

The D100 does a fine job with the D5000's but I like adding a bit of depth to the bass and some fuller mids using my Ember. As for getting the HD 650's, personally I think the 650 is a better overall headphone vs the D5000. It is much more natural sounding and in many ways more enjoyable for most music genres (hip hop and EDM sound a bit more lively on the D5000's).

If you are willing to spend the money, the HD 650 is (imo) the best purchase at it's price point (well some would argue that the HD 600 is even better but I have never heard it). I would look on eBay for some good condition used or refurbs (mine is a manufacturer refurb and it's in mint condition) to save a bit of cash.

Having said all of that, these are just my opinions. Is anyone here thinking about doing the markl mod to their d5000 http://www.head-fi.org/a/markl-denon-ah-d5000-mods
Nguyen
I already did it, pretty easy except for the dampening of the front side of the driver. I'm going to have to get a more heavy duty hole punch (probably a standard punch and hammer) as the material I used was very sticky and soft.

LINK:
http://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/1kzib7/my_d5000s_got_here_today_they_are_amazing/
How much did the D5000's sell for? I missed the price
Got mine in this afternoon. Big thanks to the team at Massdrop for finding these beauties.

How big of a sound difference did you notice? Was it worth it? Lol I'm just really scared about effing up my headphones. Basil lol...
Nguyen
Depends on what you're looking for. If you find the bass to be a bit too bloated and the mids a bit recessed then this mod helps to an extent.

I did not perform the last part of the mod (the additional dynamat on the front side of the driver where you need to punch/cut a bunch of holes). But based on what I have done the mid bass seems to have decreased a bit but it still hits pretty damn hard. Mids are a bit better but when compared to my HE-500's and HD 650's they still sound a bit lacking/recessed. Overall for the cost of materials and effort required (both pretty minimal) I would say it's worth giving it a shot.

On a different subject, I would definitely recommend getting replacement pads for the D5000. I'm currently using alpha pads (from MrSpeakers) with mine and they fit great and feel even better. Sound wise they kind of artificially boost the sound stage by simply changing the distance from your ear to the driver. More importantly they provide a much better seal (I found the stock pads a bit loose on my noggin) which helps to slightly increase the amount of sub bass you can hear.

@Nguyen : Aune T1 is a solid state headphone amp with DAC tube output stage. So the Aune T1 can drive the D5000 no problem.
cALsonic
Thank you sir.
When you say it has 2 years warranty in Asia, does it mean I can go to any Denon office in Asia (particularly singapore) for any warranty issues?
yang
Hi @yang

Yup, that will work.
Honestly they aren't worth for $600, unless you were really keen on them but never had the chance to buy them. (Sentimental Value)
How are these for EDM, in particular, Trance?

I listen to Armin Van Buuren, Tritonal, Dash Berlin, ect...thoughts?
Does the shipping address have to be the same as billing address? I can't find this info under Help/FAQ.
HiFiGuy528
I just bought a headphone amp and my billing/shipping were separate so probably not a prob for you, i am in u.s though.
HiFiGuy528
@HiFiGuy528

Nope, they don't have to be the same.
Damn you Samsung.

Denons-
WiR3D
@WiR3D thanks for the info, but sure you're not thinking of the pimeta instead of the PPA? I already have the amp and have been using it with ATH-A900s.
these are sitting beside me right now.... i can say i absolutely couldnt live without them.
Any opinions on pairing these with a PPA v1 amp? My google-fu failed me in finding anyone with such a combo.
Lowest goal reached. Success!

Can't wait to see how these match up with my HA-160. Expecting good things.
$600 for a pair of headphones????? That's just nuts.

You are clearly not into fine Audio.
wildviper
You're not familiar with headphones are you? $600 is up there but still mid to high fi. Look up HE90 and prepare yourself lol
By the way - the matrix M-stage is an oddball, with 10 ohms output impedance. But its a very well liked amp with the Denons.
Incoming review for those on the fence (hate me afterwords)

I originally owned the D2000, then bought the D7000 the moment they got discontinued. The bass on the D5000 is the most of the lot, and it has the smoothest signature of the lot (A lot of discussions on HF let to this result)

You buy the Denons if you want a smooth sound signature - The fact that they used aggressive in the description baffles me. These headphones are very coloured, and cover up the sound signature of most amps you plug them into, so they don't vary much from amp to amp.

These things are perfect for many genres of music, but not if your into a very aggressive rock sound. Rather get AKG K242HD and a big amp if thats what you want.

Denons are for all sorts of summit-fi speak people, by that i mean people who aren't to bothered about bass/mids/treble balance (because these are V-shaped and bass heavy) but who want a euphoric feeling, Denons have the uncanny ability to transport you off to your own world, and make you fall in love Lana Del Rey's voice - for one. I can't emphasize enough the overall experience that they create. Its a high of its own.

I love my Denons. But here are a few warnings:
NOT portable
Leak sound like a broken condom
Loose fit (ultra comfortable)
Very picky on amps (the best is Solid state, with high current and less then 1 ohm output impedance - check head-fi for a Denon Amps list)
They really like a good DAC.
DON'T use tubes or other very coloured components (the headphones are already smooth, euphoric and very coloured, its asking for disaster or syrup)

and lastly, when you put them on, don't plan on doing anything else for the rest of the day.
WiR3D
When are you coming back to HF? :)
I have these Modded with some alpha pads. I would suggest these to almost anyone. Mids are a bit recessed, but that bass is to damn seexy.
What's the expected shipping time once the drop finishes?
Argote
@Argote

We are aiming to ship out the headphone within 14 business days. Though having said that, we have already sourced the products from our supplier, so realistically we should be able to get them out quicker than that.
nelson
Thanks, looking forward to trying them out.
I am working on the site right now and listening through our one sample unit and I have to say these headphones are spectacular - pure eargasm!! I wish I could afford them.. :(
really damn tempting...........
Will there be warranty support for these things, or is that too much to ask for discontinued cans?
INKRO
@INKRO

We sourced these headphones from a Denon authorized distributor in Asia. So while these headphones will not have warranty support from Denon in the US, it has 2 years warranty from Denon in Asia.

If you have any problem with the headphone, just let us know, we can definitely help you arrange warranty work for the headphone.
great headphones!
If I didn't already have the D2000 I would jump on this.
