sockpuppetAnd if it gets wet, or you drop it in a creek in the pouring rain, then it's called "useless". Been there with dry tinder and a soaked lighter. No fire was made, and a miserable night was had by all. I realize that there are amazing storm matches and advancements in lighter technology since then, but I now believe in backups for my backups. This is one such backup.
nrthmnAgreed nrthmn. Perhaps this is useless in a populated, glamping situation but you can't put a price on having a trusted backup when you're 20 miles from your car in the middle of nowhere. A non-functional Bic in that situation is downright slap in the face!
TigOlBittysI've bought 4 different ones (chinese knock-offs) from ebay and they all work pretty good. Know that the ferro rod threads are different than exotac so replacement with them may be an issue. But for the price you could just get a whole new one.
Could this be used to start a JetBoil stove when the built-in ignition fails AND you forgot to pack a BIC lighter AND your emergency waterproof matches are apparently too old and no longer work? Asking for a friend...
I bought this retail. It's very well built and pretty, but waaaaay too fidgety. I would die of hypothermia before using this little guy with frozen fingers. If you want to practice with lighting fires in "bushcraft play", this is a pretty doodad, if you want to light a fire after you fall out of your canoe in April, this is not a good choice.
eclectocratMeh, not if you practice. I've carried around a ferro rod for the past 15 or so years and I have used it to light many many fires. It has even saved me a couple times when we either forgot the bic lighter, or it was too windy for a bic to work (camping above 11,000 ft gets pretty windy). It's always good to carry around a "plan B," but only if you know how to use it.
This might be a silly question, but does anyone know what the rules are for bringing something like this on an airplane? Allowed in carry-on or checked baggage? Not allowed at all? Thanks in advance.
Inconel710Thank you for the information about your real-world experience. You make a very good point regarding the safety of the Nanostriker vs. matches. But in this day and age of heightened security, you just never know what to expect when traveling on a plane. Cheers!
@wtbdis second this. If you've never used one before, get a magnesium starter like this one. http://www.harborfreight.com/magnesium-fire-starter-66560.html This works slightly different, where you shave the large magnesium block into a small pile of powder, then use the ferro rod on the other side to shoot sparks and ignite them. These shave down quickly, but work well.
While ferro rods work fine wet, they oxidize ("rust") quickly, especially when exposed to the elements. That's why all rods ship with a black coating, which is scraped off on first use. By sealing it in the enclosure, you're not trying to keep it dry and functional, you're trying to prolong the oxidation process and preserve your rod between uses. And the fact that the enclosure doubles as a rod handle and striker is a big bonus.
T_GoodActually, its MORE expensive ($2.83 with tax included) on Amazon for the cheapest color (orange) with Prime. But you will get it faster. A $3 discount is not enough incentive for me to join any drop and wait. Especially when I can buy anytime on Amazon and returns are easy.
