Hi, as it has been 2 weeks since the last update, are there any updates?
Thanks
+1 to Luge's comment. It has been now months without an official solution being implemented by Massdrop. End users really should not need to add their own steel shielding and drill holes and extending wires to move the transformer to where it should have been installed to begin with (though the discussions and measurements from those who did are quite interesting) so for those of us without the time to do such corrections it would be nice if Massdrop would actually execute one of the solutions officially or at least communicate specifics of the plan to do so.
(Considering the fact that nearly 2.5 months of 1 year warranty on these has counted down (and any plan would presumably take weeks even if it were annouced immediately) but the units havent been fixed yet, I should hope Massdrop would also extend the warranty from the date they are corrected.)
How much were these during the drop? Looking at this or the Lyr 3 P.s. I hope massdrop is making another 500+units for the holidays
Anyone interested in selling theirs?
Ok, good news first - it has finally arrived and sounds great, i've not noticed the hum that has plagued some of these. The long wait certainly adds a bit of anticipation! Now the weird, while using the pass jacks on the back to do comparisons against another amp i noticed during the beginning of Aja that the guitar that noodles in at about 6 seconds is on the left, but on any other source, it is on the right! I'm wondering if they've wired up the zdt jr. backwards somewhere along the signal path. Anyone else experiencing this 'feature'?
rlstkhdphn
The input & bypass are reversed though I don't think it would cause what you are describing.

I am sorry you don't have yours yet. I love mine, it was in my opinion worth the wait.
Vortaku
Good to hear!
Another shipment delay.. Hope the next drop doesn't have as long of a wait. So disappointed with Massdrop's handling of this product.
Thanks for the update on the shipment delay and the latest expected shipdate! Please keep us updated if that changes. Sounds like the folks who've gotten theres are enjoying them!
I just received an email that my shipment has been delayed until mid-August. What is the explanation for this latest delay please?
Does anyone know if the 6N24P tubes are equivalent to the ECC89? Would it damage this amp to swap them?

Thank you! The stock tubes sound great but just want to try a few different tubes.
Tex1954
The first tube has a greater impact on the sound. For the first tube there are much more replacement options. For example Russian 6Z2P, 6Z38P and another two million the same tubes)
Are these shipping out in waves? I haven't received any notification of shipment (checked spam folder as well as transaction history on my MD account). Anyone else still waiting on shipping info?
i_want_all_the_tacos
I'm also still waiting for it to ship out. Massdrop, can you please give us an update?
Totally blanked on the fact that this didnt come with rca cables, anyone have suggestions?
Vortaku
Cardas Iridium RCA cables would be my choice. I use Cardas Cables in my home audio systems.
Vortaku
Just get monoprice
ZDT, Jr. showed up yesterday. Low hum when powered on. Has not gone away. If it doesn’t this is the second MD gem I have that hums in less than a year. Starting to realize that I need to quit buying Audio gear at discount. The CTH is still unable to stack with anything or it has a static sound no one can explain or fix. It’s all so tiresome
Lostdog54
I will buy it off you if you no longer want it?
Anyone else experiencing hum? Had the amp for a few days and had it warmed up but the hum is still here.

My unit from the first shipment hums also -- changes in position relative to other electronics do not help, nor do cheater plugs and other fixes. Just about bearable on HD650s but painful and distracting on lower-impedance phones and absolutely unendurable on IEMs. Is a fix on the way? A replacement or refund program?
So after more usage, things did change... for the better at first and then not so much. - Initially, out of the box, it hummed more in the right channel and less in the left as I mentioned in my previous posts.
- After some usage I noticed the power switch was somewhat unreliable where the tubes and the orange LED would not always illuminate after flipping the switch on. The amp would power on if depressing the switch slightly from the on position or trying again more slowly. I can tell that there is a power transient occurring (Schiit Eitr glitches - bad USB on the un-isolated side I think - its LED flickers and sound stops with certain noisy mains power transients) when flipping the switch so I don't necessarily think it is a (or only) mechanical issue with the switch.
- Some days later I observed a higher frequency noise (I would need to measure to determine what frequency and I cannot be entirely certain I hadn't missed it before) in the channels with a proportion difference relative to the low frequency hum (i.e., stronger in the right channel like the hum; though less perceptible than the hum) that was also detectable with something like the HD 800 and more so with high impedance output.
- On another day after with one of the incidents with the powering on (coincident but I don't know if correlated), the hum and noise are now much less than before in the right channel (not entirely gone I think) but still distinguishable in the left (I cannot recollect how it compares now to before the change) and of course more so on the high impedance output.
(If the issue can change like this I think it would counter indicate the primary problem being shielding. Speculation: Aside from component differences between productions (and the 115V transformers), if I recall correctly from when the ZDT Jr. was announced, it was said that the only circuit change was changing a resistor value compared to the original Laconic design, so I would wonder if this had an effect (e.g. stability/oscillatory effects?) if there weren't prolific reports of problems with the original product.)
- Today the powering on issue became much worse, whereas before the amp would power on within ~ three attempts, I suspect it was closer to fifteen (over a few minutes) before it did. While I hope this is a statistical anomaly it causes immediate and especially long term reliability concerns if this happens on my next attempts to turn it on.
[Update 2018-10-04: I should mentioned that I have not had issues with powering on the amp since when I originally posted this message. I guess in retrospect, that issue and perhaps some others I had early on were separate problems from the hum that has since been root caused to be due to the magnetic field of the power transformer - that is the only issue I am still observing]
It really does seem like a large number of these amplifiers are having issues despite the official wording of "a few drop participants". While the amp sounds good when the humming/noise is obfuscated, these issues really aren't appropriate for an amp in this price category, and I don't really want a refund at this point after waiting so long, but instead a repair or corrected replacement (I am doubtful the units in the current batch would not have the same issues).
Too bad Massdrop uses Fedex Smartpost- cheapest way to ship. Normally I redirect my Fedex shipments to the local Walgreen's pharmacy so that it will be safe indoors until I get home from work. Smartpost does not give that option because it is delivered by the local USPS letter carrier. My package arrived in my city of Houston on Monday but will not be delivered until Thursday! It was 5 days getting to Houston and now 3 days to get to my house. I waited a long time for it and I can wait a little longer, but I wish Massdrop would pay a little more and use a more premium level of shipment for expensive drops...
My ZDT, JR has arrived. It was one day ahead of the schedule on the tracking number, which was a very pleasant surprise. Usually, Massdrop shipments randomly traverse the NY/NJ/PA tri-state area before getting to me. LOLS
Will hook it up later today and give it a listen.
Edit: FWIW, With less than two hours of listening on one headphone, Massdrop x Sennheiser 58x Jubiliee, Chain, PC+foobar FLAC music, mixed with some rando Youtube --> GustardX12 DAC --> Eddie Current ZDT Jr. There was some low level hum when the ZDT Jr was first powered up. It went away after the ZDT Jr got warmed up.
Tried the 58x on the high impedance jack. Bad call, a lot of bass was missing and the treble was very, very, bright, verging on painful.
Switched the 58x over to the low impedance jack. The treble is much less piercing and the bass returns. Music has a lot of thumpy bass, lower mids seem to have a liile bit of bass bloom. Mids are well presented, female vocals are very nice and smooth. Male vocals are equally well rendered. Treble seems to have some extra emphasis. On everything I have, treble is usually a non issue. My 65 year old ears that don't hear much of anything after 14 khz or so.
After 90 minutes or so... The bass seems to be better presented, less thumpy. There's more detail and more control. I'm wondering how much burn-in this amp will need.
The volume knob rotates from 7 to 5 o'clock. As I'm typing, the volume knob is between 10 and 11 o'clock, and the HD58x are playing at a decently loud level, upper 60s-lower 70s DB according to Sound Meter smartphone app. Turning the volume dial to 2-3 o'clock pushes the loudness to high 70s. Near max volume, at 3-5 o'clock there is some distortion in the sound, especially in the low mids and the bass.
These are initial impressions. Need to give this amp some more time.
Edit 2: Five, ten minutes with Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE4XX , Sounds pretty good, bass is very tight. mids are clear and spacious, treble is is nor overly bright. Volume knob turned to 12-1 o'clock for moderate volume levels. Volume knob over to max only gets a little bit louder. LOLs...
Edit 3: Its been a few days. Listening to my usual fare of KPop girl groups, oldies rock/pop, blues, Youtube vids, and streaming movies. The tubes are probably a lot of the way burned in now. Mostly on my HD58x or my HE4xx headphones. I like the ZDT Jr headphone amp quite a lot. The sound is smooth and clear. There's a good amount of bass, pretty well extended. The tiny bit of bass bloom in in the low mid-range is gone or I got used to it. The mids are great, vocals from all genres, male and female are well presented. I still think treble is slightly on the bright side, but it's still smooth. It's more of a concern when the volume is way up. The slight hum, I used to hear is just gone. In between tracks there's nothing much going on. I must have lost my mind, got some tubes coming in to roll. Should keep me busy for the next few months...
Edit 4: I rolled some different driver tubes, GE 5 Star 5664/6AK5W equivalents. The obvious initial impression is that the treble is a bit less bright than the stock tube . LOLS
Edit 5{ I guess the ZDT Jr continues to burn in. Over a hundred hours listening to music, movies, Youtube talking heads. I thought the hum I was hearing on day 1 was gone. But the hum has returned and it is now audible while listening to music. I was doing all my listening with my recently purchased Senn HD58x Jubilee on the LOW headphone output. After a brief check, I also hear hum on the HD58x on the HIGH headphone output. It's very puzzling. I'm writing it off as an impedance mis-match and call it a bad pairing. I switched over to my Focal Elex on the ZDT JR. and the hum is gone. BTW, the ZDT Jr. and the Elex sound great together. For me the Elex sounds good with everything I use it on. LOLS
WildChinoise
Received mine yesterday. No hum. Plugged it in and did not like the sound. Left it playing overnight, and it opened up quite a bit. I will let it burn in properly before I do any critical listening.
I really hate fedex smart post, estimated delivery was Saturday, now its showing Tuesday. I am excited it is on the way, but it makes me sad i have to wait at current estimate another 3 days.
Any extra ones from cancelled orders that I can get in on?
Hi everyone, The Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr. is currently at the airport in Russia waiting to board the airplane. We expect the units to get onto the airplane this week, and we’ll have a new estimated ship date as soon as that happens.
We know the wait can be frustrating, and we’re working with our partners to get the units to our warehouse as soon as possible. In the meantime, here is a picture of the units waiting to board the airplane:

We’ll provide an update next week.

Hi everyone, We have an update on the status of the Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr.. Unfortunately there was a delay in the shipment and we are unable to meet our estimated ship date. We're working with our partners to determine a new estimated ship date, and we should have some more information in the next few weeks. The Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr. is coming from Russia. After jumping through a ton of hoops at Russian Customs for this large shipment, our partners have had a difficult time air shipping the units due to the flight traffic from the World Cup. We’re working very closely with them to move the units over to our warehouse in New Jersey, however this is taking longer than we initially planned. We apologize for this delay, and if you don’t want to wait the additional time you can cancel your order via the transactions page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
We’ll provide an update in the next few weeks.

Will cancellations allow opportunities for others to join the drop?
We should have an update early next week. Apologies for the delay!
At his heart, Craig Uthus is a music lover and an amplifier designer. The former before the latter. Craig Uthus is the owner and chief amplifier designer of the small boutique called Eddie Current. He also used to be a partner and the engineer of Moth Audio. He’s a favorite of the audiophile community. I was already an owner of Eddie Current and Moth Audio amps when I started at Massdrop. (I owned the Super 7 and Balancing Act. Still have a Zana Deux, Black Widow, and a Moth Audio 2a3). Craig tunes his amplifiers to be neutral (but never sterile) and slightly “lush” (but never muddy). Eddie Current amps also create a larger “headstage” or what some describe as a holographic presentation of the music. So naturally, we wanted to work with Craig on a project to offer his sound through Massdrop. When we approached Craig to work on an amp that could be made in higher volumes and at a lower pricepoint, Craig explained that he isn’t set up as that kind of operation but that he already had a manufacturing partner in place and a design in mind… Years ago, Craig found a partner in Russia to make a less expensive line of amps for Eddie Current to sell. For a while, Eddie Current offered a small amp called the Lunchbox. These were low cost and had a very warm sound, perfect for the headphones from a few years ago (many were bright to the point of shrill or had spikes in the upper frequency range). Some buyers tried putting incompatible or bad, untested tubes in the amps because they fit into the sockets, which burned out parts in some of the amps. When customers started returning the amps, it became difficult to continue selling them. Since then, Craig has experimented with producing some of his own designs in a smaller form factor made at Laconic Lab and Craig has also been interested in some of the amps designed by Laconic. One such amp that Craig liked and passed around in the community was the Night Blues Mini, which made a big splash three years ago but lots of details such as importing/exporting from Russia, product testing and certification, packaging, cosmetic changes, amp support, and the small size of Eddie Current has prohibited Craig from selling them in the United States. This project has been a labor of love from everyone involved. It’s taken a year and a half to get amp samples back and forth between Russia and the US, find the beefy power switch & just the right volume knob that Craig likes to improve the aesthetics, add a Staron faceplate, make changes to fitment of the panels and screws, develop the packaging, test the amp for certification, set up exporting/importing/shipping/finances with Russia, and change the artwork on the product. We’ve had some different prototypes of the amp floating around for a while in the background during development plus there were two original amps that Craig Uthus sold three years ago, so you can definitely see some impressions today with some new ones over the next couple of days. All of the responses to this amp have been incredibly positive and I have no doubt that this amp will have a very loyal following. That’s the backstory. :) What is this big deal and obsession with tube amps in the audiophile community??? The short answer is that some headphones have issues that tube amps uniquely remedy. At the same time, great tube amps can improve great headphones to reach an addictive and immersive listening experience. Even if your headphone has the right levels of bass/mids/treble, detail & resolution, there are still other aspects of musical presentation such as attack/decay, and headstage/imaging that can be improved by a great tube amp. Some headphones sound great but the presentation through an amplifier is too “fast” sounding, sometimes described as “sterile” or unnatural sounding. Some headphones sound great but the sound seems to come from the drivers on either side of the head with a “blob” in the middle of the head between the ears. Imaging of the instruments and singer does not place them with depth, a sense of space or “openness”. These can be subtle cues or pretty obvious, depending upon what you are used to listening to. While it is hard to make the jump to an amp that costs over $2,000 if you have not been able to hear one, with Craig’s help we have an amplifier that gives so much of what the top amplifiers can do in an affordable (by audiophile standards) package. The Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr. uses transformers from Germany, a circuit design that Craig describes as “clever” and “unique”, new old stock Russian tubes from the 1960’s, manufacturing by hand in Russia, and aesthetic touches approved by Craig. Getting this amp up and running took longer than expected. If you make it into this first run, you will probably have the only amps from us for a while. Producing the first batch (we really wanted to get things started) will take longer due to a Russian slowdown in December/January due to customs backlog that occurs, plus the Chinese New Year will slow production since some parts are manufactured there. We will set a shipping date that is safe and hope that we can produce them faster for you. Here’s to good listening!
EDIT (11/21/17): The faceplate is actually made out of Staron, a synthetic stone or marble.

Gain is pretty similar between the two outputs, so the low/high outputs don't serve the same purpose as a gain switch would.

I know this is a long shot, but given the delivery estimates were pretty pessimistic, any chance these would ship early?
Hello @CEE_TEE , is this still on track for the estimated 26th June shipping date?
yargoof
Hi yargoof, I have seen a ton of emails going back and forth for some time, there should be an update very soon!
CEE_TEE
Looking forward to the update! Thanks for the hard work!
Wow... I placed an order for this exactly 7 months ago... the wait, I don't know whether I'd wait this long again... but alas, it should be shipping soon... hopefully.
After all this time, it's getting pretty close. Any chance for a production update? @CEE_TEE ? Thanks!
Getting closer to delivery, getting hyped!!!, LOLS
I'm pretty keen on one of these. Is there any chance of us latecomers actually getting one any time soon?
deniall83
I got in on the drop & I'll feel lucky to get one what with US Russian relations... I suspect they won't have any extras since the producers were only producing a limited number before this, I hope they maintained a good quality control for this run. I'm sure some will be selling theirs but not sure if they'll have another drop anytime soon. And I suspect the production time would be similar 8-9 months.

Can anyone help me upgrade my DV 336SE to a better tube amp for under $1200? DV was my first amp and while it sounded great, it didn't have enough slam, bass and clarity in micro detail as Schiit Jotunheim. I've tried Tung-sol 7236 (for $50) and Sylvania 6SN7W (for $100) which made 10% improvement but I don't want to spend anymore on tubes which will eventually lead to costing more money than the amp itself.
I'm pretty satisfied with listening to EDM on my schiit Jotunheim. But I still find DV better at playing rock, rap, instrumental and certain pop music as it outputs cleaner vocal tones and natural, organic sound that's pleasing to the ears. But the lack of slam, bass and micro detail is killing me. Which is why I'm looking into upgrading my tube amp.
Other gears I'm using are Schiit Eitr, Modi multibit, BLJ coaxial/RCA, Sennheiser HD600/650 with CH650s cable.
From quick research, I've been reading good things about the sound quality of Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr. Could this potentially be the best tube amp for under $1200?
Heinsbeans
This amp won't have the bass or slam but should be good for micro details. Read this thread
http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/massdrop-x-eddie-current-zdt-jr-official-thread.5408/
You might look at Bottlehead Crack the problem with them is they are DIY which is not that rough but still a hassle. The other problem is the tubes cost a lot or are hard to find if you are into rolling to get a better sound.

There seem to be a lot of good amps coming up. Lyr 3 is out already, MCTH is getting great reviews and Monoprice Cavalli Liquid Platinum (to be released in June I think) is getting some attention. Looks like you're spoiled for choices here.
I am still super excited for this amp!
I joined this drop and just realized it might not support the voltage here in Austria, it's 240V btw.. does someone know if i can just plug it into the wall or do i need a stepdown converter?

If you scroll down an Australian was concerned about this too and some else pointed out that it shouldn't matter.
