Update from a Hifiman dealer, this statement was made on head-fi: "Straight from HiFiMan... The Edition XX that is seen on Massdrop - Rumors have spread that this is nothing but a rebadge Ananda but that could not be further from the truth. The cup shapes are similar because this design is used by many manufacturers and covers the ear easily. The Edition XX is a specific lower cost headphone made for Massdrop. The magnet structure is older material and design as is the head bank and cups. The headphones do not have the frequency extension of the Ananda or the openness and quick response. Listening to the two and you can easily hear the difference. The Edition XX is a good headphone in its price range as is the Ananda in its price range.  The next person on the list is Lovetolisten and the address has been emailed...  Todd" Statement made by Todd at TTVJ. Still unclear how close this will sound to the Edition X but my hopes are still high.

thatguyinvicSo would the sound be closer to the Ananda or the V2's? I was looking for a poor man's v2.

thatguyinvicA little upset about this news. The Ananda are $999, and he states the performance-to-price is audible in their price range - "frequency response, openness and quick response". So if the Edition X V2 are $1299, then we aren't getting ~$1299 in HIFIMAN "sound quality". It's understandable in terms of business, but if true, this means we aren't getting a type of 6XX, 4XX etc. of replicas as seen in the past.

thatguyinvicManufacturers have a history of downplaying the performance of Massdrop editions so as to not cannibalise their regular sales. Focal even said that the Elex was "built to cost" and was worse than the Elear, which is obviously not true. So I wouldn't lose all hope yet.

MegazineThe edition x is only more expensive direct from hifiman, dealers should be less. The Ananda has been reviewed and said to sound like a quicker, more open HEXv2. Chances are that it will still have the sound quality of HEXv2 but with a warmer tuning.

Jayce98Neither, hifiman wants you to buy more expensive offerings from them. It'll come down to tuning and comfort

BurritoJusticeI haven't and your exactly right; unfortunately hifimans best value is when bought used. They're just trying to push anyone who wants the HEX tuning and better headband to buy the actual HEX, they want anyone who wants the Ananda tuning and comfort to buy that, but anyone who was looking at the used market to buy the Edition XX. More money for the coffers and corner the market with essentially the same thing 3-ways.

thatguyinvicOn the money. If there is one thing Hifiman does above all else, it's superseding their models so rapidly that their second hand market tanks. It sucks to buy early at full price, but it is nice for everyone else when you can get fantastic headphones for much cheaper second hand down the track. I myself might regret getting the HE6se instead of these if the market for those drop, though I think the limited production might prevent that. Most people I talked to preferred the HE6 over the HEX, and I like the emphasized treble of the HE6 and the slam.
