Product Description
From Mitchell & Johnson, an exciting new hi-fi company out of London, the MJ1 and HP1 headphones allow you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. They do this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use Read More

$80 ? It's not for everyone but for me it's 5 stars. I test it with Grace m9xx, aunt X1s and Teac UD-301. The warm Teac is the best amount them to drive MJ1. MJ1's strength is upper mid and hi frequency. The m9xx's detailed and neutral sound signature makes MJ1 too harsh to my ears. The warm and layback Teac is able to bring up MJ1's lower frequency and calm down hash high notes When paring with Teac, I feel MJ1 has more separation and details comparing to Beyerdynamic T51i. At the other hand, T51i sound better than MJ1 when pairing with m9xx So if you have Dac/Amp that has warm and layback sound signature and you feel the sound is too dull and boring sometimes. Then $80 MJ1 will make it sound more vivid and exciting. I will keep this MJ1 and will buy MJ2 in the future !

junkleeI can't understand for the life of me those ratings of ONE star... I can only think that those reviewers are bass-heads attracted by a very big discount and horribly disappointed by the balanced sound with a detailed midrange and high-midrange... Call me Mr. Happy as these headphones are excellent provided that the DACs are not 'shouting' the midrange requencies.

Definately NOT for disco, dance, hip-hop, rap and the like music... which does not bother me as these are not my 'cup of tea'... The MJ1s excel with vocal music, acoustic or electric, and are very good with rock, pop, jazz and classic in general. I'm using them with a dedicated headphone amp and they are my no.1 headphone choice for over 90% of the music I own; the other 10% is handled by the previously no.1, AKG K701. I have no complaints about the packaging and build quality. I gave them an initial 100 or so hours for 'burning-in' (hooked on a DAB radio that is running 24/7). The retail was, in my opinion , a marketing ploy for attracting a good share of the market by cutting the sale price by a good margin. The Massdrop sale price was spot on for me so I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

If you only listen to club music or dance music don't buy these. The music that sounds best on these are anything with male vocals and slow tempo. Think R&B, Blues, or Soul music. Every time I listen to Charles Bradley's cover of Black Sabbath's Changes on these, I cry. Because the electrostatic part only does highs and mids, you want to listen to music that focuses on that range of audio frequencies. The dynamic driver is kind of meh compared to other things out there. Easy to drive but I would recommend using a small amp when paired with mobile devices. The wires that come with this are garbage.

Landocal1Give it some burn-in time and also do some eq. I have a little over 100 hours burn-in time on them and I'm using Dolby Digital Plus and Viper4Android to adjust the sounds. After those tweaks these things sound pretty incredible. I prefer them over my ATH-M50X now. The build quality on the other hand is pretty bad. Mine cracked after only a week of usage. It came with a scratch on one of the cups, but it turned out that it was actually fractured under the finish. So the crack slowly opened up. I ended up fixing it with some gel-type super glue. The only thing I need to do now is sand them down and put a couple coats of polyurethane on them to make them more durable and give them a nice shine.

Miserable headphones, not worth a dime. Terribly muddy, they sound worse then some 15$ headphones I’ve heard.

Personal preferences - AKG 7xx > HD6xx > ... > Apple Airpods > MJ1s. After all it is one star. Did some burn in and the sound was still terrible.

Maybe the worst headphones in the world right now . Funny, they look and made ok, but sound... distorted in any way you can imagine. Actually shame.

I was taught that if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything, yet here I am. I wanted to like these cans, and it seemed like a good deal, you know, ridiculously high price, slashed to better price. Once I received them, I suspected that the ridiculously high price, was indeed a stupidly inflated price, in the same way that recommended retail prices are inflated before a sale so that they can show 50% off! The quality was cheap, the design was bad, and despite the 200hrs burn in that I gave them, the sound was meh. That was the final straw. If they'd sounded as good as they'd advertised, I could've forgiven, but these aren't the clever cheap way to get into electrostatics, they're a shoddy way to trick you out of your money. You know the old saying about things seeming too good to be true? Spend your money on something better.

Their sound signature is probably not going to be liked by many. However, it seems they respond to EQ very well, and once you find the EQ setting you like, you can experience their hybrid drive's real potential. I'll give 4 stars to the sound after EQing. The build feels sturdy, but it ain't going to win any beauty contest. The pads are small and feel cheap. But somehow they are not that uncomfortable to me. I'm fine wearing them a few hours or so.

Trying to love these headphones but ..... Previously had the gl1's absolutely loved the sound, absolutely hated the build, here with the mj's I like the build, but the sound is disappointing . SOUND Bass, mids and treb are there, but none seem to have anything exceptional to write about. To be a bit more specific bass is basically boring and boomy but not heavy like a budget baby subwoofer in a car trying too hard, mids are dull and muddled end of story there, the treble is probably the nicest part, clean but they don't extend far so aren't crisp, clear, sparkly etc. Sounds stage is a couple centimeters around your ears and inside your head, separation is probably the only other thing that's noteworthy, you can identify instruments etc to an acceptable degree. To my ears these have a very weird sound signature, highest points seem to be in the mid base around the 125 to 500 hrtz and in the highs around 2 to 8khz and dropps of at the ends and mid. Almost want to say these are dark headphones but I don't want to cause the word that comes to mind is boring, for both audiophiles and consumers. BUILD Solid, comfortable and looks great, thumbs up, the wood finish is beautiful. This is where you get your 2 stars. At the moment leaving these to burn in over the next few days and hoping for an improvement, if I don't write an update then these have failed me and I've given up on them. I also had the same idea as DimondPilot of drilling holes in these to try to improve the sound. At the moment they are probably gonna become my beaters till death. CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATION save your money, get something else, I can't think of when I'd want to sit down and listen to these, and I've tried hard to think of a reason, I've spent hours listening to different genres, artist etc. I don't find myself wanting to sit down and listen to these, and that makes me sad :(
