Product Description
In 1944, Swiss engineer Hans Hilfiker designed what would go on to become the Official Swiss Railway Clock, which featured an easy-to-read dial with large white stick markers and a bright red seconds hand. About 40 years after the clock’s debut, Mondaine received official license from the Swiss Federal Railways to use this iconic design as a tribute to Swiss watchmaking tradition Read More
The reason the white face isn't actually being offered (despite being shown) is because, and this often applies to the more expensive pens offered, is because MD is trying to move the stuff that didn't move!
In this instance, the white sold at retail and the black didn't. Why would that be? Well Google "Swiss Railway Clock" and see how many black clocks come up.
Where MD's pen offerings are concerned, fountain pens normally out sell ballpoints (and their snooty cousins, roller balls), four to one in pen stores, but margins are so good, manufacturers don't mind making rollerballs just in case-- even if they have to dump their excess at well below retail (don't worry, nobody's loosing money in that game).
In other words, if you want' a deal, you take what's left/available. You want the good stuff, you pay full-price.
RayFI actually wanted the black dial over the white dial (so this clearance thing actually works out for me nicely 😃), but I can see the point you're trying to make. The iconic design does look nice also.
HQD8Trying to make? I'm not trying to make a point--I am making a point!Doesn't mater if you bought it on clearance (or even if you get the methodology)--as long as you're happy with your purchase, the system is working... ;- )
CloacaI also thought of replacing the strap, but after wearing it, I changed my mind. It looks great, the soft leather feels comfortable on the wrist and the hole spacing is close enough that you can wear it "tighter" so it doesn't bang around a desk or a keyboard, and then loosen it by a hole if you want a little more breathing room, without it dangling around the wrist.
FWIW, the larger/longer minute/"stop-watch" hand can be very nice. My Tutima uses one, and it's so much easier to read that I wouldn't want anything else.
They could have put lume on the tip of the black hands ... no big deal though, I ordered one.
if I wanted great legibility, I guess I would have bought a $35 Timex with indiglo...
It's an attractive Swiss watch ...

leeAWell, legibility for this watch is actually great... Except in the dark. I need lume since I sleep with my watch but without a alarm clock (too bright)..
OkanaganguyNo, it has 2 functions. When you start the chronograph, it spins around measuring milliseconds for the first 30 seconds. After that, it stops, and jumps to the millisecond reading when you stop the chrono. However, if you let the chrono function run for more than 30 minutes, this dial changes functionality and starts measuring elapsed hours instead. For example, after three hours, it will read "3", and won't jump to milliseconds when you stop the chronograph. I've never seen this kind of "register switch" in another watch, and it's pretty cool.
