Product Description
A measured way to style and a stylish way to measure, this watch strap from Nick Mankey Designs features both metric and standard measurements up to 9.6 inches long. Crafted from vegetable-tanned leather sourced from Hermann Oak, the strap is dyed in the California sun to give it a natural aged-brown color Read More
While this looks nice when new, I've had similar thin leather-only watchbands on NATO thread-through-springpins style watchbands and once they get wet from sweat or washing hands, the leather starts to stretch lengthwise and shrink width-wise. This means that around the watch lugs, shrinkage causes unsightly gaps at edges on ends of springbars and gradual bending of the springbars under stress from the now too-small-from-shrinkage leather bands. Since this one has ruler marks on it, any change in leather dimensions (which WILL occur over a short time) is going to make the ruler parts pretty useless.
Regular higher quality leather watch bands (through buckle type attached directly to springsbars) are made from water repelling treated leather layers and then stitched together (often with a non-stretchy material sandwiched between leather layers) which help them retain their shape over time. Other leather watch bands tend to have a large thick piece going around wrist with smaller thin leather only to hold the watch to the thick leather wrist strap (like the old German Pilot styles). A thin leather-only "vegetable oil tanned" leather strap without any stitching or secondary material support like this band is going to be out of shape quickly (especially if you have a heavier watch that you keep tighter to keep from flopping around on the wrist.).
BTW, that review that says it wont stretch is full of crap. It WILL stretch and shrink as soon as you get it wet and wear it dry a couple of times. Just like the way all leather goods are stretched to fit things with water (like holsters with much thicker leather) a thin leather watch band will do the same.
Is Nick Mankey affiliated in anyway with Dorothy Mantooth? Asking for a friend.
In all seriousness, I'd like to just point out that this item should be considered as fashion only, and not a serious ruler. Veg tanned leather will stretch and shrink according to conditions. Maybe not by any enormous degree, but the mm and imperial fractions will most certainly become inaccurate.
Hey everyone! Nick Mankey here, creator of the Ruler Strap (if that isn't clear enough :P ). I just wanted to pop by, say hello, and get in front of the coming conversations by dropping a link to a recent Massdrop discussion thread that addresses a lot of good points. It's basically an elaborate FAQ. Check it out here: https://www.massdrop.com/talk/1496/new-strap-design Let me know if you have any other questions! It's an honor to be here :)
Thanks! The wrist shots in my post were used with my own 6.75" wrist. I do not know the wrist size of the model used in the drop. You can adjust the stud wherever you please though, and I personally find that using one stud on either side of my wrist is really quite comfortable.
Definitely! And thanks for your support. I'd probably handle that outside of Massdrop though, so just shoot me an email and I'll either ship it separately or with your order: nicholas.mankey@gmail.com
Got my leather stud strap on a watch today from Nick and works really well for a heavy watch! Be mindful when taking off your watch next to a hard surface because if you have a heavy watch, like a divers watch, it can swing real fast and may cause damage to a watch. I've done it already but the watch is fine lol. But the strap holds up great!
kpjimmyNice setup! Great choice going with the Chocolate Brown. As far as removing the watch, I try and keep my wrist flat with the watch case resting on top of my wrist, and then undo the stud closure, making a point to never let go of the slotted hole side of the strap- even if the watch slides off, the stud won't allow for the case to slide down anywhere. Thanks for sharing!
halfbellstate@halfbellstate is correct. But to provide more background: When you buy a leather hide, it usually never has a perfectly uniform thickness due to the trimming process and organic nature of the material, so they sell it in terms of its range in thickness. In this case, the leather used for the Ruler Strap varies from 2-4 oz, meaning about 1-1.5mm in thickness (1.5mm on average though I would say). Hope that clears things up @serif@kpjimmy.
hmm any chance of adding more diferent button style syuds, with the purchase of a single strap ? i men if i could get one brass ad one black or 2 of each att an extra price ?
The_SuecI don't think a fair arrangement could be made within the Massdrop listing at this point, but get in touch with me via email and I'd be happy to send you a few different studs once the drop is over: nicholas.mankey@gmail.com
nmankeydont worry, i live over europe, so i will just get one band for a watch and decide on a color of the studs, and next time this drops again i will pic up som other size plus som otehr studs :) thx any way !
Just wondering why two button studs are included? Seems from the pics that only one is needed to serve as a clasp to secure the strap on a wrist. The other seems to just sit out there and looks like it'd be annoying. Does it get caught on clothing, scrape and bump into things as you go through your day? Otherwise, I like the design.
RazzaIt was a decision I made based on feedback from the early adopters of the strap. A few folks were slightly bothered by the inner excess not being completely fixed in place (as it would normally be with something like a leather keeper on a standard watch strap), so as a simple fix I just started throwing in an extra stud to serve as an option for the owner should they choose to use it. I personally only use one stud on the medial side of my wrist, and do not find it obtrusive whatsoever (motorcycle gloves, long sleeves, gym, auto shop, etc.). Hope that helps. Thanks for asking!
Needs to lose the billboard sized logo and URL across the front. Killer deal breaker! If on the inside, no worries. But front dead center? That's a no-go.
I might make the case that an ordinary NATO strap doesn't really carry any value in terms of style points or functionality. But enter the Ruler Strap, and all the sudden you have both. Just the other day I actually wore another steel bracelet-style watch of mine on my left wrist, and the bare Ruler Strap on my right. Having a ruler on hand throughout the day can really make your life easier in a pinch.
