Do not recommend. IMO it sounds the same or worse than the simple lightning to 3.5mm cable that you get with any of the new iPhones. So basically this is an expensive and chunky "DAC/Amp" that is worse than a simple adapter that you get for free.
This had potential to be absolutely amazing. It isn't though; im really disappointed.
for a start, how about better connectors? It keeps disconnecting and needs to be plugged in again constantly.
the app button on it really needs to be customizable to allow users to open their own choice of music player rather than the default SMSL one.
thanks for letting me down SMSL
anyone know if any 2-in-1 lightning adapters exist that could be used with devices like this, so that you can charge and listen at the same time?
every single 2-in-1 adapter on ebay only has a single lightning port and one headphone port, whereas we would obviously need one that has 2 lightning ports
Perhaps I have less hearing loss than the average reviewer, but the device plays loud enough for me when using low impedance phones, which seems to be the way to do on mobile gear. It works fine with all my apps. The soundquality seems ok , I hear some nice seperation in classical music. Have to listen some more. The only thing that I didn't like was the import tax and handling costs I had to pay to the bloody dutch customs.
Wow my iPhone 6s powers headphones better and with more volume than this "amp".
mfletch
my thoughts exactly.
This thing sucks. I hardly notice any difference in the sound. Just my 2c. The app is horrible and doesn't allow you to run anything streaming through it. If i'm not using the app am I not getting any benefits from this thing?
bvolunuev
You don't need to use the app, it appears to "work" with any audio app. But as you've noted, it sucks and there is no benefit no matter what you use. Unless of course your phone was too loud, in which case this thing is perfect. :-)
bvolunuev
I'm glad I'm not the only on disappointed with the lack of performance!
Any measured output impedance numbers?
Got my shipment today, too. I've listened for an hour or two, and I'm not happy at all. While the DAC probably isn't bad at all, this thing is NOT an amp. It can't even drive a very easy pair of over-the-ears to an acceptable volume level. So I don't care how good the DAC is if I have to put it through an amp. I have other combo units (bigger) that I can use instead, the major draw of this was the size.
YMMV, but I didn't need to use the app (which is awful and I've had to reinstall twice already) to listen to normal iTunes music. I have other apps that can do FLAC, I'll give them a try tomorrow to see how they sound. The only thing I'd use the app for is upgrading the Firmware.

Agreed, no measurable difference between the headphone port. Honestly, i'm underwhelmed.

Guys, I was about to put this up on eBay... BUT I just realized that eventually I'm going to have to upgrade my phone to the newer version that does not have a headphone jack and I guess this device will finally have some use.
Got the shipment today and have listened for a few hours.
The good news — *good price *elegantly small and unobtrusive *enhanses sound quality greatly to even these aging, no longer golden ears
Not good news — *must listen through the only app available *the app does not "see" my mixes *the app has no instructions (perhaps mixes can be dragged and dropped like HR tunes can be as in a responses below?)
It'll have to fill in until I find the DAP I want.

I can use the native music app to play my music w/o issue. Not sure about mixes though.
Deguello
Correction on the above: listening directly connected to the app does not allow or show my mixes/playlists, but listening through the regular IOS "music" app incorporates the SMSL apps dac functions and plays my playlists too.
if I needed more amplification, I would be disappointed as well, but what I get for my Audio-Technical M-50x's is adequate for me.
I know I am new to these products on my iphone. I can play the regular music on my iphone from itunes using the smsl icon app. But there is a section of the app labeled HD music and i was wondering if there was any literature on how to get music into that folder, so I can hear the difference on my higher end headphones.
Marshel512
Yep, you have to go into the screen where you manage the storage and apps on the device in iTunes. You can scroll to it in the list of "Apps" and from there, you can drag FLAC or other HD files into the portion of the screen.

For what it's worth, the app is quite terrible.

Is this 16-bit or 24-bit? Is the limit 48KHz or higher?
LordBorg
According to the specs, it's 24-bit capable.
Can this control the camera shutter ?
I felt compelled to give this one a shot because it is so elegant in execution even w/o any reviews here on its ultimate sound qualities. I figure my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x's will be easy enough to drive, and while I am looking for that cheap DAP, this device is small enough to just about do the job with my iPhone or iPad. I hate those tangles of adapter cables for other solutions.
For 60 bucks, what could go wrong?
Man, if there was only an extra lightning port... that accessport got slapped with the fugly stick pretty hard.
Hoping someone could help a brother out:
Already tried asking this question on the interwebs but no one seemed to notice.
I'm a budding audiophile and I want to start small, and by small I meant portable/mobile DACs to be used with phones. I have my eyes on either this (SMSL Icon) or the HIFIMe Sabre USB. Note that the sound will be coming from an iP7 and would be coursed through an iem. (I might get a NuForce too and am currently waiting for the hyped chifi KZ ZST Pro. )

haha no problem, I know how frustrating it can be.

i currently use a oppo ha2 for portable and a aune x1s and I am going to get this there are going to be times u are willing to sacrifice on audi quality for true portability. To me this will be worth it. it will be good for things like riding my bike where the ha2 is a massive pain.
Can this be used with Spotify, or do I have to use the onboard iTunes music player?
Nighthawk423
Any audio output. Works the same as Lightning-USB based docks and external amps.
MFi Certified?
And is the app required? looks super ugly from the app store preview
harrisonjr98
It looks to me like Iran just a lossless media player. ie you can load up non iTunes supported formats on your phone for better quality. I doubt you need it to take advantage of the DAC. It should pull the signal through the lightning port without any software addition.
Just backed this and the accessport kickstarter. Guess I'll see which one is better.
Screw you guys for always linking me to more ways to spend money! :P

Yeahhhh. This company already had one successful kickstarter project so that lends a bit more credibility to it, I guess.
harrisonjr98
well I backed it up nonetheless, lucky that I got the last spot for the 24 dollar pledge.
Im looking into getting this even tough i have a oppo ha2 sometimes it would be nice to have something truly portable
Compatible with iPhone 5s? Thx.
Shadowphd
Yeah any lightning plug apple product.
Kozic
thx👍🏾
Why are the headphones connected to the iPhone directly instead of the DAC/Amp in the main photos?

Hi all, I updated the drop page with information about the Cirrus chip contained in the SMSL Icon (CRD42L42). Further information can be seen here: https://www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proBulletin/MFi_TB_RevF.pdf
The lack of specifics
Joined, hoping this will bring my K240s to life through my phone. Maybe my K7XXs too, who knows? Hope this thing doesn't suck- thanks for the lack of specifics massdrop /s
harrisonjr98
I used Apogee Groove to do that, but sadly it doesn't work easily with iOS devices (even when iPads have larger batteries than some of MacBooks), and is ~$300

That's what attracts me to this drop. I have an iPhone 7 so it's nice to see a Lightning accessory- plus it's cheap. My phone will never be the primary way I listen, but I have been itching for something to boost it's output for a while.
