With more robust multi tools (Leatherman, etc), do folks still use Swiss Army Knives? I thought these were the coolest things as a kid and still love the look but have never pulled the trigger because the tools just seem so fragile compared to more modern designed multi tools.

dealaholicI'll chime in on this as I subscribed to a similar notion. My girlfriend bought me a Spartan for Christmas in '15 and I literally just started using it 2 weeks ago. Last night I did the unthinkable and apologized to her for not using her gift sooner. This thing is the slayer of boxes, and the blade stays surprisingly sharp. I typically carry a mid sized Spyderco or Benchmade folder and then a smaller cheaper 'beater' as a backup in case someone asks to use one of mine. I switched my smaller folder for this one and I don't regret it one bit. It also makes for a really capable office-friendly EDC tool when you are around people who are triggered by 'murdery' looking knives like spyderco's, LOL. And for their pricing, even without the warranty, it's still a great deal. They sharpen up easy, resist corrosion pretty well, and keep a decent edge, considering their thin profile.

dealaholicI own a bunch of stuff so no dog in this fight. Here’s my take .
The one I reach for the most often is the Leatherman Wave with full bit set in a nylon case. Its a real pliers. It’s all self contained and it has a upgraded 420HC steel blade. However I also for the last 20+ years reach often for the Swiss Champion. If you own one SAK that’s the one to buy. I have regularly used the corkscrew, miniature flathead screwdriver that fits inside that screw, the wood saw, the can opener, even knowing I can grab a file. i like the scissors on the SAK better but both are highly useful.
These are tools I can throw in a checked suitcase and at destination know I can do a lot without having to bother my hosts or call hotel maintenance for stupid stuff. Or even have to buy a tool at 7/11. When I travel I always throw the SAK in never the Wave. It’s lighter. The knives are functional though they don’t lock.
I just returned from Alaska and I did pack the SAK Champion. I used the scissors so often I immediately ordered the Classic SD in Alox (slim, no toothpick or tweezers) for my keychain. I’m using it daily. The knife on there is the AG Russell ultimate pen knife in titanium with VG10 steel. Love that little knife. (It doesn’t lock.) https://agrussell.com/knife/A-G-Russell-Ultimate-Pen-Knife-Carbon-Fiber-and-VG-10--RUS-PY4CF
my pocket carry is the CRK Sebenza small 21 in lefty so this SAK wouldn’t be on my radar.

For the record, the handle is still good old cellidor, just in black or white, rather than red. The polispectral finish refers to the tools and blades. Regardless, it's a lovely knife.

I don't own this knife in this finish, though I do own a fair number of Swiss Army knives. Regardless, the answer is yes. Anything abrasive, by definition, will remove it. If the sharpening surface couldn't remove the coating, it couldn't sharpen the knife. With care and the right sharpener (i.e. one that ensures a consistent blade angle) you can minimize stray scratches, but nothing will prevent your blades getting a little scratched with use. This is especially true for Swiss Army knives, which use a relatively soft steel.

chathamharrisonThank you. I will try using painters tape on the blade while sharpening.

Bloody corkscrew...why does it have to have a corkscrew? I mean no one uses the corkscrew.

DBSSA Swiss army knife corkscrew is my favorite tool for opening wine bottles. The can opener is another great kitchen tool.

DBSSI disagree, the cork screw is the most misunderstood tool of the SAK! Here are just a few examples. https://youtu.be/ERD1vC7bHKM

Lanyard and key ring listed as a tool. Seems like a stretch there.

Is the finish really worth the extra 30+ bucks?
I have a SAK Compact model and use it almost every day. They're great tools.

Chris1234I think it's a matter of taste. The PS coating gives is a nice sheen that really pops. Whether or not it's worth the +$30 is your call...I got mine outside of Massdrop for around $75 if I recall correctly.

Please do one of the smaller SAK’s like a Rambler or MiniChamp! ALOX would be the cats pajamas!!
NomadI would be ALL FOR a Rambler or Manager with Polyspectral coating! If it was Alox, I would have to give up the Manager’s pen... but I had a Rambler for years and I know that’s a good (and handy) tool.

"this tool sports a shimmering, mirror-surface finish known as Polispectral. Hold it at different angles and the tools will appear to shift in color." They sell this exact same knife elsewhere for $20 just without the above special finish on the blades. Just wanted to point this out to others because I love the knife itself and the black casing rather than the typical red, but paying an extra $40 because "shiny" is just kind of wild (imo). Here's the amazon link for the cheaper non-color shift coated version: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007QCOCO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
BootsawyerBut this drop is all about the polispectral finish. If you only care about functionality, just buy the red one now for $22 (usually $25-$30) and stop reading. But if you feel everyone has the alarm-red handle, and you want something unique and maybe limited, the Polispectral finish on the shiny-almost-black blades and a black or white handle, this ups the special factor significantly. Maybe this is a safe queen for collectors or special social occasions, but then I wonder how fully Victorinox’ lifetime warranty covers it.

Evshrug"But this drop is all about the polispectral finish." Exactly. My point was moreso for people who would like a black casing, but don't really care about having a special finish because you can find the black casing elsewhere for a cheaper buy. When this drop came through last time, I was tempted to grab it because I really liked the black casing instead of the typical red and I was totally unaware that Victorinox made them in any other colors. My hang up was paying $60 for a tiny pocket knife because that seemed a little too much for my taste. After searching, I found the same knife for 1/3 of the price just minus the blade finish (which is exactly what I as a consumer was looking for - a cheaper price and black casing). I just wanted to make others aware who might've been in the same situation as me prior to dropping $60.

Can you please make this thing ship to Bulgaria. I don't get it, I have bought Victorinox Swiss Army Knives from massdrop before without any issue. Why it's not possible for this one?

Sooooo… I had been wanting and holding back on getting this knife for years. You may have completely moved on, but I finally caved in and bought one. It’s subtle, but I like it! It isn’t iridescent or opalescent in any way, which would have been fun in a fantasy sort of way, nor is it inky like DLC (Diamond like coating, I had two friends who bought Apple Watches this way). No, it’s a mirror finish silver like most Victorinox steel knives, but it has a smoke gray tint. It is, in fact, an oxide film that is deposited onto the steel using an electro-chemical process. [image] Here it is showing the reflection of my front window and front lawn off of the large blade. It’s so reflective (no pigment like a car paint to make it unable to reflect in full color) that you might be excused for thinking it just looks like normal chrome in pictures, but I promise it’s darker. [image] The tint is more easy to see here, as it reflects my white iPhone case and white ceiling. Victorinox’ care and maintenance instructions do say that the finish would be polished away by resharpening, and wear and scratches would also remove the finish. The knife IS sharp and very functional, and I think a wear pattern from use and brightening along the edges from pocket wear would look cool, but honestly, this is probably more of a Safe-Queen and collector’s model than a typical user. Personally, I am not a whole-hearted knife collector, but I got this because it does give me aesthetic pleasure, and I want to show it to product managers as an example of a cool, unique finish that I think would be outstanding on a headphone (or pen, flashlight, money clip, etc). It’s subtle but unique. Me like-y.
